Did I buy a disgrace?

Picked up my first revolver yesterday. It's a smith and wesson 19-3 with 2.5 inch barrel. It has been duracoated od green. I thought it looked good when I bought it but the more I look at pics of others with a deep bluing I wish I could've found one of those. I shot it today and loved it. Really like the feeL in the hands and balance over the rugers the rest of my family swears by. I think I got a deal on it at $350 but it sure isn't pretty with the duracoat.

this thread screams PICS!

I wouldn't care, im a function over form kind of guy, and weird stuff like that gives a gun character.

What you bought was a cosmetically challenged shooter, and a gun type that's still one of the best street combat wheelguns ever made, period, end of discussion.

For $350? You did fine! I wrote "the checkout" to help people spot exactly this sort of critter.

If you get some money later, feel free to have it properly re-polished and blued. I'll cost...what, about $200 to have it done right I think? Or...I'd actually consider a hard-chrome job or a non-traditional high-tech finish (and no, NOT "duracoat"). Black chrome would look awesome.

My personal carry ammo recommendation for that thing: probably one of the "less than absolute peak power" 125gr 357 loads available today. The Cor-Bon DPX 125 would be perfect, but a bit pricey. The Remmie Golden Saber isn't bad. Cor-Bon's 140gr standard 357 JHP is another good option, a bit more recoil I think.

If you bought one of those perfect blued ones, you would be afraid to carry it or shoot it.
My own Model 19 was bought at a gun show from a dealer who sells LEO seized firearms, and came with case numbers engraved on it.
When I got it home, I discovered that the barrel was a stainless Model 66 version...hard to tell, as it matches the nickel finish so well.
Still, it shoots great, and is probably my favorite revolver. It is at gunsmith Andy Horvath getting a tune up right now, and I can't wait to get it back.

I bought it as a dedicated truck gun so it would be there for those late evening pajama trips to the store for milk when you don't want to get dressed and holster up and all that. Thought it would be a cheap gun that I wouldn't miss that bad if anybody was ever to steal it. I think it fits the bill perfect so there's no remorse. Maybe I'll just have to buy a pretty one to shoot around other people. Uh oh did I catch a bug.

Heck with a durakote finish I would carry it the hot summers here. I have to give my guns a wipedown every evening in the summer here when I carry, due to the fact that sweat a lot. Well my G26 has a home cammo durakote type finish that it does the job well enough.

You did just fine. I'd have snatched that up in a heartbeat too. Been lookin' for the same sorta thing for a dedicated tractor gun. I'm sure you will get along just fine with it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like it, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Actually, I hope you post some photos of it as it sounds interesting. If it functions well and shoots good, enjoy the heck out of it and don't ever look back!

Personally, I like blued guns - I've never liked those shiny ones. I know a lot of folks do though and that's fine - everyone likes different things. I have some nice newer blued ones but what I really enjoy the most are my vintage ones with holster wear and that show signs of use - to me, it adds character to 'em.

I think you did just fine and we're looking forward to seeing some photos of it! Enjoy! :)

Ummm...sorry, but I have no respect for this notion.

If you let a gun get stolen that easily, you've screwed up. Sorry, but...no.

In Kentucky it's legal to have a loaded gun in the glove box with or without a ccdw. Pretty much everybody does. I don't think leaving a gun in your locked vehicle that has an alarm is letting it get stolen easy.

I'm with Jim on this one. I don't care if the whole state of virginia did it and the law demanded it. I've had my car broken into one to many times by kids who would definitely hurt themselves or someone else if they got hold of a gun.

Never had my vehicle broken into. Most of the people around here respect others property. Not saying it couldn't happen but it is unlikely. Bad people do bad things if they are armed or not. You can buy guns at the flea market here so most people won't risk getting shot breaking into a vehicle looking for guns or anything else.
I didn't ask for everyones opinion on gun security because we could all go on forever about that. I just wanted to know what the S&W enthusiasts thought about a OD gun. Thanks for your input. I'll post some pics of it tommorow if it doesn't get stolen before then.

Nothing wrong to me. Like others have said, as long as the mechanics are fine, you can always send it back to S&W to have it reblued or nickeled.

Sorry, I just cannot get on board with this attitude.
If you do some research on where bad guys get guns, a large percentage are either stolen or bought black market...which probably means buying a gun someone else stole.

As lomg as gun owners do not work hard to prevent guns from being stolen, we will have vociferous opponents who want to pass further legislation against legal firearms owners.

If you have a laissez-faire attitude about having your gun stolen "because it is cheap", then you are part of the problem.

I do not and will not leave a firearm in a vehicle unattended. Just as easy to take it into the house with you overnight. And if you need to leave it in the vehicle at work, there are a variety of lock boxes to bolt to the frame.
