Wull, I ryte beddar than mosta youz guys. Someone says to try MY bullet (the 124 gr. Rem. JHP) with 6.0 gr. of Power Pistol. Before you do, I suggest that you get a good overview of what works by reading as much as necessary. I find that when pressures are listed for Power Pistol, it looks to be very close to Unique in burn rate, and therefore a bit hot for anything heavier than 115 gr. bullets. I very much prefer powders that deliver highest velocity with lowest pressure (a good trick, and I don't know how they pull that off). I prefer Hodgdon HS-6 for 115 gr bullets, and Blue Dot for 124's.
Alliant doesn't list a load for Power Pistol with a 124 gr. bullet, but it looks like 6.0 gr. would have you going at about 1,160. I did the same test with 7.8 gr. of Blue Dot, moving at more like 1,220, and got the same result as you got. I used both the regular 124 gr. Rem. JHP and the 124 gr. Golden Saber.
Another guy sez that ballistic gel is the better medium, since it most closely resembles the water content and density of flesh. Some truth to that.
In water, the Golden Saber shows a tendency to jacket separation from the lead. In softer mediums, it doesn't.
I think we're naturally inclined to "test" in as many ways as we can find. The problem with tests is that there is no way to replicate an actual gunfight situation. In the real deal, you may have to shoot through different kinds of stuff. Because of that, I'm really wrestling with the idea of using the Ranier plated 124 gr. flat nose. Let's say you shoot through clothing that clogs the hollow point. Feather down is really good at that. Now the bullet is a FMJ with a strong jacket. Even if it hits bone, it will probably not deform very much. The plated flat point will cause a bit more upset in an unobstructed wound channel than a FMJ or clogged HP, but if it does hit bone, it will be very likely to deform, and do more damage.
It's all conjecture, until the fight is over. The really big idea is to poke holes in the bad guy, faster than he can do unto you. You could shoot wooden bullets, and you'd still be better off than throwing rocks.
