Did a dumb thing

The other day went and bought 2000 large rifle primers, as it seemed I was getting low. Got home, put them in the locker, and noticed a 5000 round sleeve of primers which I thought were those CCI military primers. Looked closely.

Ugh.

Large rifle primers! Oh well, they ought to last awhile now!

Did the same thing not so long ago. I bought a set of dies for a 30-30 thru mail order. I went to try to find them, no dice. So I figured I must be having a senior moment, I hadn't actually bought them, and so I went to the store and bought another set. Was sort of straightening up around here, and found a box in a place where it didn't need to be. Opened the box, and there were the dies. So now I have two sets of dies for 30-30.

As an added bonus, however, I found a Lee trimmer pilot for the 30-30 in the box, thus saving me yet another trip to the local merchant. I don't actually remember ordering that up.

If I am following you correctly, you bought 2000 large rifle primers only to find out you still had 5000 on hand. How can one loose track of 5000 primers someone might ask? Well they will last you for a while. I usually don't keep more than three or four thousand in reserve but would take some off your hands if you were close by. Try trading back the extra .30-30 die set back to the shop for another 1000 large rifle primers ;) or more preferably something else. Those things just happen when not at our best I guess. Buy hey, as a bonus you at least got the Lee trimmer pilot.

I'll tell you how bad senior moments can get, if I were in your shoes I would go and see if I even have a 30-30.

Heh.

I once bought 2,000 small pistol primers.

Only to realize on the way home that I had actually wanted to buy 2,000 large pistol primers.

So, I put those 5,000 small pistol primers on the shelf with the 10,000 other small pistol primers that I had, and the next time to the store I bought my 2,000 large pistol primers.

A year or two from now when you start loading them and look at the price on the box you may think you did a smart thing. :)

So far andyjr11's response takes top honors with all others a close second. I'll bet the OP is confusing a .30-30 with something else, like maybe a .30-20 or .30-15 or something like that. Being a senior member means more than just having 100 posts to your credit.

.30-20?

.30-15?

Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Well yeah, that's exactly what the above was intended to convey, alluding to the forgetfulness and perhaps implied senility of this humorous thread ;).

Once at an estate sale I had my pick of Nikon camera lenses. I had most of them, but some I didn't, the mid-range fixed primes, so I grabbed three nice ones, quite positive I did not have them already.

Get home, open up the drawer, and already had each of them.

The only time you have too many primers or too much powder is like having too much fuel in an airplane. The only time it really matters is when you're on fire.

When the next great shortage occurs, you may just find that the dumb thing you did looks a whole lot more like a shrewd investment. Besides, I'll guess that you felt real good about it when you bought them. There all kinds of things that people do because it feels good at the time that are truly dumb. Think about it:

You could have spent the money on getting drunk.

You could have bought a carton of cigarettes.

You could have bought lottery tickets, or better yet, lost it all at the casino and more besides.

We could go into a whole long bottomless list of all the unwholesome things you could have done with that money.

Instead, you bought primers before you ran out. On this forum, that's a praiseworthy action.

Do you feel better now? I know I do.

If I go up to Bi-Mart and find some 22 LR ammo there, I generally buy it, even though I am not out of it, because it is still rationed. I know I could spend the same money on liquor that will likely make me feel good when I drink it. But the mere purchase of it does nothing for me. Oddly, when I purchase ammo, there is some immediate sense of gratification. Later, when I actually use it, the same thing. Plus there is no hangover.

So, you stocked up on primers. You done good. Not that long ago, there was a long dry spell around here when you could not buy them to save your soul.

Pathfinder45, I don't know, I was thinking of adding to the list but it seems you covered it.

Cripes! Then I looked at the number of APS small rifle BR4 primers. I'll never use that many primers in a lifetime.

My question is: Where did all of the CCI large rifle military primers go?

LOL >@anjr11 I double checked. Yep. 30WCF rifle. Check!

Yesterday went looking for some specific motorcycle parts in the garage. I found parts to bikes that were sold years ago. I suppose I could try to sell 'em on Ebay, but took 'em to the local Brit Bike repair shop, as maybe he will use them. I kept the Amal mono bloc rebuild kit, despite not having a bike with that carb. One never knows!

I have 8# jugs of powder in the magazine that I'll never use... unopened even. I think I see an ad on the internet in my near future.

To heck with the purchase error, please just tell my how do you get them to breed like that?

Stubbicat,

I'd be happy to make you a deal on a carb rebuild kit for a single barrel 225 slant six.

I keep lists of things I want to get or make at some point. Many is the time I've found I already have them. I narrowly escaped buying a second Redding Competition Seater for 222 Remington. I'd meant to get one for a long time, but hadn't loaded and shot the round for spell. Then one day I'm going through my deep cover box of old stuff and find one brand new in the box and never even degreased. I have no memory of buying it, and I'm pretty sure I'm not breeding those, either.

All joking aside, if you start having any more of these senior moments please tell your docor and get tested for the early stages of Alzheimers.

We went through this with my Mother.
There is a better possibility of slowing down its progress with early detection.

BTDT! :( I wanted to avoid duplicating purchases so I inventoried my primers and powder supplies then wrote a note about which ones I had plenty of and stuck it in my wallet. When I see a "deal" or a long lost powder/primers on the shelf, I'll do a quick check to see if I have some already...

It ain't Alzheimers, I just have so many important things to think about some thoughts get shoved to the back of the cranium. Now, where did I put my glasses? :p
