I don't think they're going to end up making any change at all. Going to a new caliber completely changes the current logistics system and puts us out of sync with NATO. Now you might say to hell with NATO and to an extent I agree, but with Russia heating things up in Europe I don't see us breaking NATO standards. If they don't change caliber then that begs the question is there any design that will bring about radical improvements just in the pistol itself? Frankly I think the answer here is no too. There's actually nothing stopping us from using hollowpoint ammunition as we never signed that section of the Hague Convention.
I work in the defense industry. If I have learned anything it is that the military almost never knows what it actually wants and what it says it wants changes constantly. Making correct guesses about what they want is about as easy as playing Battleship while blind.
