I can foresee at some future date a law that starts with a re-affirmation of the 2nd Amendment, then declares that so-called "assault weapons" will no longer be legal, and the government will reimburse owners of such at what they will call a fair value. Penalties for non compliance will be made severe enough that few will resist, especially because they will be able to retain all of their other guns.
Some time later the law will be expanded to include, possibly, all semi automatic long guns, and possibly some specific semi auto handguns, again with severe penalties for not turning the banned weapons in.
Eventually all semi auto handguns will be declared illegal, but great attention will be made to the continued legality of all bolt action long guns, all pump and other shotguns (other than the semi auto ones) and all revolvers.
It has already started, and has been going on for some time now. Since the 1980s, it had been a long, patient and steady campaign of misinformation and gradual demonizing of gun ownership. It is called "boiling the frog". What happens when you throw a live frog into a pot of boiling water? It will jump out immediately. However, if that same frog was placed into a pan of cold water, and the heat gradually turned up to boiling over a period of minutes, it will not feel a thing and will not realize it's impending doom until it is cooked to death.
First, they start off by eliminating the public's exposure to guns through the media and popular entertainment. In the 70's revenge flicks starring Charles Bronson, police and spy flicks all show a large amount of gunplay. Today, these kinds of movies might likely invoke an outcry from soccer moms and the PC crowd. Along with that, they also began to indoctrinate schoolchildren against guns, slowly. Start by short stories and lectures about how guns are "evil". Dispense horror stories and inflated tales of accidental gun deaths. Finally, escalate it into inquiring if the children's parents keep guns in their homes, and encourage them to report it and "say something" if their fathers drink just one extra beer after dinner or take painkillers for a chronic condition. Now you got the ball rolling...FAST. An entire generation of young adults have now been forged to automatically associate any weapons with "evil" and "harm". And now, have colleges continue to indoctrinate these young folks by convincing them that any attempts by anyone to criticize their lifestyles, dress or sexual habits are forms of "oppression". Get em' riled up and ready to torch cars, block the streets and break windows every time someone looks at their tattoos with open disapproval. That is how they have gotten the young adults of today to be "politically active". If you research how "Black Lives Matter", various "hashtag" movements, and "Antifa" began and progressed, that is the mechanism behind them.
Once this main fire is started, now it is just a matter of patience for gun-grabbing legislators. They unveil package after package of "common sense gun regulations". They are not concerned about initial defeats. Even when entire packages of laws have been shut down early in the process. That has been going on since the 1990s. Time after time, the antis have suffered devastating defeats. We have even gone on the offensive and gained some ground, ie. Heller and the passing of Castle Doctrine and Right To Carry laws in many states. But have they ever gave up or even slightly diminished their own offensive power? The answer is NO. It is a process called erosion. Do not forget that the Grand Canyon is carved by nothing but flowing water. It does not matter how many times they are defeated. They will keep coming and coming. With more funds. And more followers. Their main purpose may be to disarm us, but they fly the flag of "social justice" and "progressive reform". Thus, they are able to gain the patronage of media figures, celebrities, large corporations and educational institutions.
Our victories are anemic compared to theirs. They can be defeated 100 times and win only ONCE. But these single victories add up and slowly but surely, they will pile on top of us and slowly drown us. Different types of firearms have been legislated out of civilian hands. NFA anyone? The AR-15 and it's cousins are currently under attack. Magazine capacity restrictions have already been implemented in many areas. Whenever something really terrible happens, like a mass shooting, the gun-grabbers can use their overwhelming patronage in the media and popular culture to stoke the flames of fear and hatred against us. And they will find ever creative ways to slowly snatch guns out of the hands of folks who already own them. Have you served in the military and been deployed to a shooting war and came back with psychological distress in any degree? That can be used against you. Had an innocent argument with a child or another family member? That can also be used to keep you from getting access to firearms again.
We are not getting younger. And even though we have been quite successful in teaching younger generations to practice and cherish the legal and responsible ownership of firearms, the antis still have much sway over the media and the education system to get "viral" movements against us. They wait, patiently, for our numbers to die out. It is not magic or wizardry. It is social science, plain and simple. It has worked with 100% success already in the United Kingdom and Australia. And it is working quite well here too. Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s, high school kids have driven to school on deer season opening day with their rifles, ammo and gear in their cars and as soon as class is out, went hunting. Department stores and hardware stores sold hunting and milsurp guns and ammo by the palletload. So did mail-order companies. I dare someone to try these stunts today. Even if they win the legal cases, they will be bankrupt.
M*A*S*H, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Bonanza, Stargate SG-1, Farscape, Firefly...THESE were the shows that used to be on television. What do we have today? What the heck is "Games of Thrones?" Never seen the show, only seen screenshots and written descriptions and can never figure out just how the heck it has anything to do with educational value. The only kind of "games of thrones" I know of, is a bunch of us shooting old toilets and water tanks at a "junkyard" style competition, with revolvers, leverguns and bolt-actions.
Some time later the law will be expanded to include, possibly, all semi automatic long guns, and possibly some specific semi auto handguns, again with severe penalties for not turning the banned weapons in.
That is what the passing of the NFA already did. Prior to 1934 there were plenty of folks who owned full-auto Thompsons, short barreled shotguns and rifles and pistols with shoulder stocks. Did they hate the fact that now, with a stroke of a pen, all of their heirloom quality weapons are suddenly illegal? I bet so. Hell, I would be too, if I was an Appalachian waterfowler who uses a sawed-off 12 gauge for wider angle spreads, or a Colorado rancher who owned a fully-automatic M1928A1 for defense against bandits and jackals. But these men had no choice other than abiding by a new and very unpopular law. It is either that or face severe financial penalties and jail time.
And if you personally think that you would not comply with a law demanding you turn in some or all of your guns, be prepared for a local SWAT team, with a warrant, showing up at 3 AM and ransacking your home for your "arsenal" of guns and ammo. A prudent gun owner will be making sure, right now, not to have all of his or her guns in one place, like a large gun safe, but will be prepared for such a search and seizure operation with at least some guns hidden well enough, or far enough from one's home or business, that they will be secure from government agents in their jackboots.
What I am about to say may not seem high road to some folks, but when it gets to that point, the only alternative for law abiding citizens that are about to be outlawed, is to resist. With force of arms. This is something that our fellow gunnies like Mike Vanderboegh and David Codrea have addressed in the past and continued to address today. It is not something that is pleasant or endearing to think about, but when it comes to the point that we must make a decision of whether to protest, speak out, and as a result, get arrested, sent to a camp and possibly die, live in submission or use physical force to get our lives and livelihoods back, then it is something that every freedom loving individual must consider. By the time mass confiscations are already underway, hiding and storing guns will not be of any useful advantage. What good is a tool if it has to be kept hidden and you cannot ever use it at all? I will have to quote somebody from another forum long ago: "When it is time to bury em', it is time to dig em' up". Plain and simple.
