Defining a gun collection.

Well, some of my guns are for collecting but some are just accumulated guns that I happen to like. However, there are fewer of the latter than there used to be, due to my having traded a lot of them away.

My collecting guns are S&W Model 10s (my favorite revolver) and BHPs (my favorite auto). I have a number of each, but not nearly enough!

I'm also partial to the Beretta 92 and the AR-15 in their various forms. Do I have collections of either? No, but what I have could be the basis for real collections if I had the money to build them up.

In fact, for me, the price of guns these days has become a major deterrent to either collecting or accumulating. My wife has never opposed my purchasing a gun. But I can tell that the ever-increasing price of guns is a cause of concern to her. So I've cut back the number of my gun purchases in order to even things out. I used to buy a gun every few months. Now it's a couple of guns a year. The cost is the same. Too bad!

Being a computer geek, I put together an Excel spreadsheet which covered all practical uses for firearms that I will likely need to address. Various game animals to be hunted, targets to be shot, and defensive situations to be encountered. Then I matched up the capabilities of my guns with the criteria listed above. I was able to rationalize the purchase of several guns based upon "holes" in my chart. The only "hole" left is a .338 Winchester class rifle for very large/dangerous game in North America. I am planning an Elk hunt soon and will need to "fill this hole".

I will then have a gun to cover any situation I will need a gun for during my lifetime. I have promised myself that I will stop when my chart is full. We will see. :-)

Elk=very large game? What do you call Moose then? What about buffalo? What about 'ol Jumbo? :D

I like the 338 though. It is on my list.

Clintons view of a gun collection-one handgun and two cap guns-one rifle and one squirt gun or a BB gun that looks like a real one next to an issue of Shotgun news.
Any of the above collections will cause you to be looked at as a subversive. If you have more than the above you belong on a list to be arrested as soon as their agenda is in place.

You can never have too much money or too many guns!

I am a relative "newbie" to gun collecting or accumulating as the case may be. My habit for guns started in March of '99 with the purchase of my very FIRST gun of any type...a Sig P220 .45ACP. It was love at first fire. Soon after, I decided I needed a rifle, and then another handgun, etc, etc. Counting 2 guns that I have since sold, I have purchased 5 handguns and 2 rifles in 14 months, with another rifle (CMP M1) on the way. I have noticed that my tastes have begun to change somewhat with regard to what I buy. Initially, I wanted something "tactical" looking, and purchased 2 Sigs ( Sig P220 and a P226), AR-15, and a Savage 10-FP rifle with mil-dot scope. But, as time went by, I have noticed that I am now more drawn to the stainless 1911's with cocobolo grips, the fine looking M1 Garand with a beautiful walnut stock.....guns with more "history" behind them I guess. I definitely don't buy guns spur of the moment, but I don't really have a central theme with my accumulation. They are just guns that I happen to like. Sorry for being so long winded.
