Defensive field revolver recommendations?

I'll throw my hat in with a Vaquero in stainless .45 colt 4 5/8" barrel or a Super Blackhawk in 5.5" barrel .44 mag.

not difficult to carry in a comfortable belt holster, rugged, more simple design and less to go wrong than a double action revolver.

Another vote for the single action

vaquero /blackhawk, in either 44 or 45, but i would say 44 if you don't reload.

That being said, the 357 is a great round, and will do 99.999% of anything you may need, as our esteeemed peers have stated.

If your buddy also has a 357, and you believe he can hit anything, than you should be fine with one of your own, 2 can do a lot of damage.

Buy what you are going to be the most comfortable carrying and shooting.

Which Revolver

I will leave caliber and make to the others. You mentioned small hands. Some time back over at sixguns.com the subject of trigger reach came up. J. Taffin measured a bunch of his guns and came up with the following reach:

Anaconda 2.806"
Python 2.908"
Redhawk 2.726"
N frame 2.884"
K frame 2.767"
L frame 2.755"

The Redhawk was a surprise. Although he didn't measure it the GP-100 and Dan Wesson allow more latitude in grip shape as they use a stud going into the grip versus a frame.

My personal opinion would be if hand size weren't a problem to get a Mountain Gun as they actually weigh a couple of ounces less than a GP-100 4" adjustable sighted revolver (nothing against the GP as I have one and like it but it does weigh). The 5.5" Redhawk has a short reach but weighs 49 oz.

I have never tried one but Taurus makes some light .41 mags. And then there is the L frame 696 in .44 Special but I don't know how hot these can be loaded.

This REALLY helps. I appreciate the advice from everyone. I feel I can make a good decision now.

I really want to stay DA if possible. Here is what I think:

NO COMPROMISE: Ala Dan suggested the S&W 629 (.44mag - 5in) That was my original thought. - should handle about anything. Also Ruger Redhawk KRH-445 5.5 in looks really good (especially with 2.726" reach)!

COMPROMISE (Less expensive and easier to shoot/carry) : Ruger KGP 141 (4 in) or 161 (6 in). I wish Rugar had a 5 in. barrel here.

I guess now I need to go look at these guns and make a decision.

Thanks VERY much to all! I was surprised at the quality and quantity of responses.

Well we've had feral dogs, snakes, cougars etc. mentioned but nothing about the most likely target of selfdefense which is a run of the mill homosapien.

With meth lab cooks being forced into the wilderness, marijuana fields, and a whole bunch of psychos who should be in institutions left to roam the country, it's my contention that the even in the most remote area, your most likely life threatening encounter will be with a human not a bear or cougar. Believing that and knowing 911 is a looong way off in that scenario, I'd make my choices accordingly.
