Deer Lease, or trick or treat with the kids?

Every year Texas deer season opens on the first Saturday in November. This year, Halloween (Oct 31), is the day before deer season opens.

Hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of Texas dads go to the deer lease for the opener. Most leases require several hours of driving.

Now, we all know that Texas mom's expect Texas dad's to go out trick or treating with mom and the kids. But to do so, this year, dad will likely not be sitting in a deer stand half an hour before sunrise (legal shooting time in Texas), this year.

Will Dad disappoint Mom and the kids by leaving work Friday afternoon (or earlier), and heading for the deer lease?

Will he be thinking, "Why doesn't she understand how important this is to me?"

Will Mom be thinking, "Why doesn't he understand how important this is to me?"

Will Texas divorce attorneys do a landslide business in November?

If you were in this double bind, which would you choose:
Deer lease Friday afternoon?

Trick or treat Friday evening?

Man if momma wants to put up with me poutin' all night worse than a 2 year old than candy snatchin' it will be but my wife wouldn't even try to get me go as she knows I would be miserable missin' anything I would MUCH rather do!
She also has a tendency to pout so after 21 years married we each know when to let the other go have their own fun whatever it may be...;)

My wife would say... "Daddy is spoiled rotten like ya'll and he would rather go huntin'..." In all seriousness I think I would pull an all nighter. Go out with the family and haul but to the woods and hunt the mornin' and get a nap after that. But I never had to travel hours to hunt unless it was a preplanned hog hunt which includes junior.

Your children will grow up way too soon. Spend time with your family. Hunting is not as important as being with your family. If it is, you have your priorities out of order.

Honestly,

I can't believe your asking.
Your kids will remember you not being there longer than you will remember not freezing you @ss off in a blind.

But here is a sure fire resolution to this dilemma... TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTIN'!!!:D
Okay whadda I win fer that?

i dont want to call you selfish.....

but unfortunately, i dont know a better word to describe a father who ditches his kids on halloween so he can go hunting.....

so, that's damn selfish of you....

i feel sorry for your kids

on the other hand.... if this is truly a tough decision for you, then perhaps it's best if you're around your children as little as possible during their impressionable years.... so that they do not pick up your selfish habits

Double up! How late can the kids stay out? Just have the car packed and hit the road as soon as they're out of the costumes. Zip on out, get to your stand and sleep on there 'til sunrise. I have gone on some serious midnight runs to get out for the opener before. If you were supposed to sleep Cabela's would be selling fold-out treestand-beds.

can the leases be bought online, like a permit?

could you get the day off work and go get the lease first thing in the morning? that would mean losing money unless you had paid vacation days. from the sounds of it you don't. you would have the afternoon to trick or treat with the kids. i went hunting/scouting yesterday.was thinking on going out this morning, but didn't.

Another vote for the kids. If they're young enough for Trick or Treat, they oughta be in bed early enough for you to go to the lease AFTER.

Your kids will only be Halloween age for a few years and it can be a lot of fun. In this household the family always comes first.

Today, the kids are gone and the wife pushes me to get out of the house, loves my hunting.

It really is a no-fricking-brainer. It isn't like Halloween is for the whole season. It is just for one day. Is missing a special one evening yearly event with your kids really okay with you so long as you are there for opening day?

Wow are you kidding me.Iwould agree family is important but really its halloween. We're not talking christmas or thanksgiving here but halloween.Either way Id say trick or treating for an hour or so then bail to dah best of both

Lease! The way I look at it the only thing up for dispute is how nice a nursing home your kids put you into!:D Ungrateful litttle buggers. My buddy also hunts Christmas Day! How bout them apples:D
