Daughters first rifle

I have my grand fathers and my fathers guns plus I already have a nice collection of my own! The kids know they can shoot and use any of them at anytime! They all picked out their first 22 first everything! Not trying to take that away from her but I may not can afford to buy her a rifle like that in 10 years and lord only knows if any of us will b here in ten years! But I do understand my thinking can b a Lil crazy sometimes

If you want to post a video I would suggest you upload it to youtube and paste a link here.

As for your purchase I guess I can understand. I had a few rifles and shotguns that I wished I had bought because prices were right but I had limited funds so I passed. I guess if you have the money go for it and pack it away for a good day.

Of course my dad tried that and bought this bolt action 410 with a stock in cherry stain for when my brother got older. That must have been 25 years ago and my brother has never shot it and in fact it still has the original price tag hanging off it.

And to think I was given a beat up Marlin/glenfield 25 in odd orange stain and 22lr that was well used. I almost feel like I was shorted. But I guess I do use all my rifles and teach others how to shoot on that gun.

I have several guns I don't take out hunting just because they are too pretty to get banged up! I would cry if I scratched them but would not bat an eye for my kids to take to the stand in a case! If my daughter doesn't like her new rifle I could pick alot worse things to b stuck with!

I take new shooters that have an interest in shooting a deer every year on youth day, none under 10yrs. old. The best set up I have found for the job is a Sako Finnlite in 6.5X55 sweede. It has low recoil is accurate and will get the job done, good for young shooters and women.

I also have several grandkids and have been very impressed with the .243 Win, using both Barnes TSX and Hornady GMX bullets. Three one-shot kills on some pretty nice deer, including a 144 lb doe shot by my 13-year old granddaughter at 175 yards this year was a clincher. It never took a step.

Prior to hunting this season, I had both granddaughters shoot my .243 Tikka T3 Lite and they were deadly with it. They each fired two shots at a steel ram target at 182 yards and three of four were in a 1" group and the other was only about an inch out. That was from shooting off one sandbag while leaning on the hard pickup cover.

The .243 Win will be with us for a very long time. I also like the 7mm-08, but sometimes it's hard to find ammo for it. The 6.5X55 may be available for some time, but you probably won't find it at a small general store, etc.

The nice thing about the .243 Win is that kids can get used to shooting it at varmints and it's easy on the shoulder for multiple shots at the range, especially with a recoil pad.

I have a 6 y.o. grandson and am planning my first purchase for him, so I know what you are going through. Of your choices, I would definitely buy the .308. Ruger makes the American in an all weather compact model. The .308 has an 18 inch stainless barrel, carbon composite stalk and weighs in at 6 lbs. The 18 inch barrel and 6 lb weight makes this a very maneuverable gun. However, this combo will most likely come with a fair amount of recoil. Therefore, I'm planning on buying my grandson a .308 and will have a muzzle break installed, which would basically take the recoil to somewhere around a .223-.243. It would offer the most versatility. Also, a synthetic stock makes this gun great in all weather. I'm planning on having the stock dipped into a camo scheme for him, that would really make his gun unique. Pitch that possibility to her as well. Regardless of which .308 you would purchase, a muzzle break would be a great investment for a younger person. Good luck!

She has looked at these rifles and has picked the mark v deluxe! I'm sure if I had laid a pink gun up there she would have picked it! This will certainly not b her only rifle but it will be her heirloom piece! Something of a show off gun and I'm sure she will smile while she tells her friends and eventually kids that its from her grandpaw! If she so chooses the forester in 243 that I killed my first deer with to kill hers that will b fine with me! My youngest boy says he is gona use it next year because he likes the old Charles daily scope that is on it!

I do apologize to everyone that I hav'nt said anything a out safety before now! I'm very strict on my kids and one simple Lil mistake ends the day for them! My kids wear only the electronic ear muffs and here's why! These muffs amplify soft sounds such as me speaking to them to ensure they hear everything I say! When the gun goes off it automatically shuts the sound off! It looks funny but my kids check them frequently by clapping their hands! I get asked bout that all the time! I do not let them shoot into the wind period! They always wear glasses but that often isn't enuf! My kids hunt from wooden box blinds so I can keep heaters going and it covers their movement while playing the little handheld didital games! We always take a sleeping bag also just incase they want to get a nap while dad is waiting for big boy! I sure wish i would have had it so good!!!
