Remember in the movie "Crododile Dundee"..."you call that a knife?, now THIS is a knife!" Croc better not come back to New South Wales (NSW), where knives are illegal. ...tried to carry a Swiss Army Knife into Homebush Bay...wher most Olympic venues are. Security confiscated it. Suggested he throw it in the trash can, "Knives are illeagle in NSW". ...two Olympic volunteers said the ordinance was passed after a longstanding ban on handguns "took guns from the crooks' hands". "The thugs switched to knives...so a new law bans them". The law is "...left to the discretion of the police to enforce".

Next up, banning ungulate lower mandibles!!

Regards,

"...the right of THE PEOPLE ..." means me!

Silly! "Crock" can't go anywhere; He refused to turn in his guns, and they gunned him down. Didn't you hear?

And, no, I'm NOT making that up!

Wait, is that a picture of a vest on that page? They've banned body armor, too? That's apparently the only "defensive weapon" the law-abiding citizens of Britain can still own, and it's illegal "down under"? Big time wakeup call coming along any minute now...

zook

"Turn in prohibited weapond before they hurt you" I think there is a typo there. It should read "... before WE hurt you" Any idea why body armor is prohibited? Oh yeah, cant have the measley peasants surviving police action can we!? I always though Australia would be anice place to visit. Guess I'll stay with the Discovery channel version, save my hard earned cash and stop supporting the socialist elite my family ran from decades ago.

I think I'm going to be sick...

I don't believe it! Is that a SLINGSHOT I spy at the top of the poster of banned weapons? You have to love the message, "Hand in prohibited weapons BEFORE THEY HURT YOU". I'm sure the message was intended for the "they" to mean the weapons, but I interpreted it to mean before the government hurts you.

Chris II-
How does it feel to know you have been manufacturing BANNED weapons in our basement for the past year or so... Powerful ones, too! I always supected you were a desporado!

The usual,

Dad

Because of these new banning laws in OZ even Israeli Olympic team security had their holsters and body armour confiscated on entry. There is also no provision for armed foreign nationals involved in official Olympic duties, even though there were requests made by both Israel and the USA.

Australia takes on sole responsibilty for providing security,a heavy burden to carry. So be it, remember Munich.

BTW Olympic archery gear also must be under lock and key when not eventing.

How in the world are all the firearms which will be USED in the Olympics be handled?

There are quite a few shooting sports in the Olympics. Mens' and Women's. The current Issue of Sports Illustrated has a complete list. I'll try to look it up and post when I get home tonight.

Why is it that the world's finest shooters will be competing is a place where what they are doing is illegal?????

and what do you use to defend yourself? farts and strong language is suppose.

oh yeah you could call 911 or what ever. i am sure they will be glad to draw a line around you. i notice that body bags are not on the list.

Competition firearms will be given a special "permit" for use during the Games. They will be under lock and key between events. If Australia had NOT offered all shooting as an event, Sydney would not have been awarded the Olympics -- so big money rules again.

Not all guns are banned -- club sports shooting is actually reasonably popular.

Zook -- yes, body armour is illegal.

Dan in GA -- yes, any wrist support-type slingshot is a "prohibited weapon".

jrhines -- Knives per se are not illegal in NSW or anywhere else in Oz , other than certain types -- "flick" knives, "butterfly" knives, shuriken and here in my state, double-edged blades are illegal.

What is illegal is carrying a knife without "just cause".

The law had nothing to do with "crooks losing their guns" (because they didn't, just us ordinary people), but much more to do with ethnic "gang" warfare, with groups of kids all carrying knives and using them on each other.

Good one again Bruce -all knives over 2" are illegal to carry publically in NSW unless you have a good reason(EG cockie or tradesman). ALL slingshots are illegal in NSW...even ones you make yourself, the wrist brace ones will get you 5 yeras and /or $11,000 fine.
BP Jackets are illegal because the police have them and thence have an advantage !

The Israelis got their holsters back.

I guess they are doing what many are doing here - taking out insurance unless the UN/Nanny State fails us.

It wouldn't ...would it? :)

FYI, according to Sports Illustrated, there are 17 shooting (only) medals at the Olympics. 10 for men, 7 for women. They range from 10 meter air pistol (that's right, grown people shooting air guns for gold) to 25 yard rapid fire pistol (which many TFL members secretly believe they would win if they could compete) to 50 meter rifle (that sounds too easy--where is the 100 meter rifle? I'll bet some of our TFL western hunters COULD win that), to trap, double trap and skeet.

And I believe shooting is also part of triathalon, right? Any other events include shooting?

Did they have any trouble keeping the shot put event in? I don't know what caliber it is but at close range that thing could be a real menace, vest or no vest. I don't even want to thing about the javelin.

RKBA!

Dave R - I will assume that is not a sneer when you speak of grown folks shooting air guns for gold. Both air pistol & rifle are genrally recognized as the most accurate and demanding of the shooting sports. Sixty shots, 200 mins, off-hand, at a target 10-meters down range(for the rifle), 1 13/16" in dia, the 10 "ring" is the size of the period at the end of this sentence. The current sectional champ is Deborah Kubisiak, of Penn State, (agg. score 381). The best air pistol team is US Navy, with an agg. score of 2242. My kid shoots for the Purdue team, ranked 18th out of 22 schools. But they are learning.
Gas powered guns have a long & nobel history for every thing from defense to offense to hunting to just punchin' paper. It's how I started my kids with safe handling and gun discipline. You can do it in the basement or the livingroom or the long upstairs hall. And it's benign enough so that even Mom might try it. And when she discovers she has a steadier hand & smoother squeeze than the young bucks, she'll like it!
Also, I belive it's the biathalon that has shooting. A Nordic winter sport combining x-country skiing with target shooting.

The target in 50 meter rifle is 10mm, or .3937" (approx 3/8 MOA) so it's not as easy as you might think.

The Pentathlon has a shooting component in it, but the Triathlon doesn't. I'm not sure if there are any others in the Summer Games that have shooting combined with something else.

Is there any event in the Winter Games besides the Biathlon that has a shooting component?

Ethnic gang Warfare?

In Australia?

What Ethnic gang warfare?

Call me naive - maybe I'm just a North Queenslander who's been away too long to have heard of it.
