Darn Mossberg!

I picked up a Mossberg 500 police surplus for $150 about a year ago and I've done a bunch of shooting with it. Unfortunately, the stupid shotgun has failed to give me ANY interesting problems to fix. Nor can it be improved with any special gadgets. What's the point of such a weapon?

LOL ! My Taurus .22 pump is the same way. Load. shoot, repeat..

My bro-in-law found one in the bottom of a pond. Rinsed off with a hose, stripped and cleaned it. Still shooting..

I've had several Mossbergs and foolishly let them get away from me. Never met a Mossberg 500 or 835 that I didn't like!

mine had a rock stuck in it from a desert trip and it still went for about 100 rds at the range before locking up!

2 going on 3

I have a 590 with 10,000 rounds through it as of today w/o a single glitch with only so much as a wipe down as far as cleaning! I also have a 9200 Jungle Gun which is another great shotgun. I like em so much I am going to buy the 590A1 with the ghost ring sight setup and put it through the ringer as well!

I've got 3 500's. Two 12s and a twenty.

The only Mossy I've ever seen that failed to run was a Maverick that was kept above the fry vats in a resturant. When it was cycled it would jam with the bolt locked into the rear of the receiver. My guess was that the heat had warped the receiver and I advised the owner to call Mossy and see if they would swap out the receiver if he sent it in.

Sadly the resturant went out of business before I found out what he did with it.

Thousands of untold rounds through my 500 without a single malfunction of any kind.

They don't call them the best for nuthin! :)

What does a speedfeed stock do for you? I've never examined one enough to really figure out the difference.

:barf:You're right--DARN MOSSBERG--I bought two Mossberg model 500s(.410), one of them worked flawlessly, the other one did not work right out of the box.
Shells would NOT feed from the magazine tube up onto the feed tray to bring up a fresh round into the chamber.
In other words, once you fire the first round, you don't get anymore unless you load them single shot-one-at-a-time.
A bolt action gun would have been faster.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO I sent the Mossberg back to the factory, as they told me to(phone call), to get it fixed.
After NO COMMUNICATION AT ALL FROM MOSSBERG,they sent the shotgun back to me three months later.
Ya-you guessed it-they did not fix it at all, I don't think they even looked at it, if they did, I have no way of knowing how, as they didn't have anything to say, they did not say whether they fixed anything, or replaced any parts, I guess they were to embrassed to say anything.
I got rid of that Mossberg, and will not buy another as I know of two other friends who bought Mossberg .22 caliber rifles, and they did not work at all right out of the box(THEY WOULD EVEN FIRE A SINGLE ROUND).
NO I'LL STAY WITH MY WINCHESTER FIREARMS, BERETTA FIREARMS, AND RUGER FIREARMS, if you buy from those three companies, you won't go wrong.
If you were to have a problem, they have excellent service for their customer's; MOSSBERG DOES NOT.
I'm sure Mossberg makes some excellent guns(my first 500 as mentioned above), but their quality, and service is not consistent.
In my opinion Mossberg has a long way to go.
I just told the truth, but did not amke any new friends, sometimes the truth hurts.

wm1300defender,
Sorry to hear that you got a bad apple. There are lots of horror stories to contend against the scores of praise these weapons get. I put my life in the hands of firearms everyday. As such I demand that they be 100%, flawless, and in perfect working order. The sad thing is that you never know that for sure since you do not get to test fire the shotguns issued from the KIT room, because who knows what other officers did to the weapon during the 16 hours that I was off from work! At least you found out before your life depended on it that it wasn't working properly! See there is always a plus side! :D

There are more then a few horror stories about ALL, I repeat, ALL the gun companies. If you work with firearms for very long you will see many guys with hangdog expressions come in with broken guns. Here's a few......

Brand new 870 with a broken ejector spring right out of the sealed box.

Ruger 77 rifles that wouldn't hit the barn door from the inside of the barn.

Remington 700 .222 with no rifling for 3" in front of the chamber.(mine)

S&W revolvers that won't fire new out of the box.

TC single shot pistol that won't fire new out of the box.(mine)

Ruger O/U with barrels that came apart on the first shot.

HK semi-auto rifle that wouldn't function. It made 3 trips back to HK before they got it fixed.

AND, the best one was a S&W 6 shot revolver with only 5 chambers cut. There was only a center drill dimple where the 6th chamber was supposed to be. Tell me how that one got through inspection and proof testing.

It goes on and on and on.

Speedfeed stock holds an additional 4 rounds (Two on either side of the stock).
I recall that much, just... do these expand the magazine capacity by four, does the stock allow and alternate method of loading, or is it just a convenient shell holder (as opposed to buying one)? I guess that's what I was wondering about the "Speedfeed."

The stock has two "tubes" in it that hold two shells each. Its just a form of ammo carrier, nothing more.

I think its actually less convenient than a sidesaddle for actual loading/shooting, but it requires no smithing and takes up no space. It also adds the weight of 4 shells to the rear of the gun, which could help or hinder balance, depending on your setup and perspective.

TEXAS LAWMAN,

Negative:
I stripped (and I mean stripped) the gunk from the receiver, and there was a lot of gunk present. Used almost two cans of carb cleaner, plus a whole lot of elbow grease. I would bet the farm that when I was done there was nothing but aluminum.

Also replaced all of that guns internals (bolt, carrier, etc) into my 500 that was new at the time. His parts worked fine in my receiver. My parts jammed in his continually.

I cleaned it thoroughly, returned it to its owner, and explained what I found. Like I said I suggested he see if the factory was willing to take it in and replace the receiver. Sadly the resturant went out of business (a shame, they made the best German Potato Salad), before I found out what he did with it. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have offered him $50-75 for it and keep everything but the receiver for spare parts. Oh well, not the first thing that's slipped away. :(

What part of Tejas? I'm going to be in Austin next month!

Glad to hear so many great things about mossy's. However, my dad and i both own mossbergs with problems. i have an 835 that will not cycle 3 in or 3.5 in shells. Seems to jam up just about everytime. My dad has a 500 that does the same with 3 in shells. We have tried them over and over and they just dont' seem to want to cooperate. So i need some help.
thanks
derek workman
