Dad is looking for a Nightstand duty gun.

Hey guys. My dad is looking for a new gun (new to him anyway) specifically for nightstand duty.
He's thinking something that's high capacity in .45ACP or 9mm. He likes some of the Glock offerings as well as some of what Beretta offers.
He needs a full size gun since he has fibromyalgia and needs something large he can grip.
I told him a G17 might be his best bet due to light recoil and magazine capacity, but what opinions do you guys have.
What other brands are good that I should consider. FNP, Tarus, ect.
Don't want a peeing match just general ideas.
Thanks guys!

I own an FNP-40 and it's a great gun! So from what your post says I would suggust your dad try to find an FNP-45 he can try out. They're good sized guns with 14+1 capacity in .45 ACP.

Also if he's open to 1911's the Para Ordnance Big Hawg might fit the bill. It's got a nice wide grip because it's a double stack .45 with a capacity of 14+1 as well. Only thing about this gun I would advise is that mine had to have a break in period of about 500 rounds before it really got reliable.

Yeah, our neighbor has one of those and my step dad liked it. He also likes my G19 but thinks he'd want a bit more length on the grip, which was why I recommended the 17 to him. He says he's gonna try and get to a gun shop this week and hold several and try and decide. His main thing was capacity. He wants 45 but is lean more towards 9mm due to capacity. He wants something, that if there is a bump in the night he can grab and go.

If you want a BIG grip it's hard to beat a Glock. I would suggest a G17 or G19. I vote for 9mm for better capacity and alot less recoil. Two features that allow any shooter and advantage not just the elderly. Also, look at the XD and M&P if you like that style but want something more refined.

2 quick questions...

Hi;
I read your post and have 2 questions;
1) Can your father safely load/unload, work the slide and fire a semi-auto pistol?
2) Can he or does he plan to use any white-lights(1913 type flashlights) or laser sights or Crimsontrace lasergrips?

If you dad can handle & shoot a semi-auto pistol and his health/medical condition are not major issues, I'd suggest a SIG P220R DAK .45acp, a Beretta PX4 C model in .40S&W or .357sig or a HK45 or HK45 compact(LEM) in .45acp. The SIG P229R DAK in .357sig or a HK P2000 LEM in .40 or .357sig could work well also.
Any of these duty pistols could be used for home protection & can add a laser aimer or white-light(like the SureFire or Streamlight). The extra weight can help lower recoil and may prevent ADs or mistakes in lowlight.
Research states that about 80% of use of force shootings take place in low light or night time. Night-sights or 1913 rail mounted lights help a lot.

For defense rounds, I'd get a bonded 230gr JHP +P in .45acp from Speer Gold Dot, Ranger T or Remington Golden Saber. For .40S&W, a 165gr JHP bonded, same major brands. For .357sig, get a 125gr JHP from Corbon/DPX, Speer Gold Dot, Hornady or Winchester Ranger T.

Hey clyde,
1) Yes. He can rack a slide easily and load/reload a semi-auto
2) He did say he wanted a laser sight on it.

His medical cond. is not major. He could fire a several rounds at an assailant if necessary however range days are a thing of the past. Only adults in the house, no kids. It would sit loaded and ready in the nightstand.
Thanks for the recommendations Clyde.

Walther P99 with rail-mounted laser and night sights. Perfect nightstand gun, and VERY ergonomic with a nice grip and interchangeable backstraps. Plus- it has a sweet trigger. The AS model. I have one, without laser, and I love it.

The 21 was the other Glock I recommended to him. I didn't think about the Walther. I'll tell him to check one out when he goes to the gun store.

does he want da/sa ? dao?

nice thing about the GLOCK is very simple to field strip and only one trigger pull to learn.

not to mention reliable.

I think he's on that track.
I showed him my G19 and he held it and dry fired it and really liked it. Showed him how easy it was to field strip which he also liked.
He did say he would like a bit more grip so I figured a 17 would offer little to no felt recoil. Plus 2 extra rounds.
We'll see how this plays out but for now it seems he want the 17. Don't know what kind of ammo he plans on keeping in it. Definitely JHP though.
My main reason for asking here was just to see if anyone had a different option on what he could get.

I'm not a Glock fan, but...

From the parameters you specify, a Glock in either 9x19, .40 S&W or .45 ACP seems to fit well. I prefer more bullet to less bullet, but it sounds like your honored father can decide that on his own.

The Glock can be loaded, charged and left for extended periods of time. Only one trigger pull to decipher. Reliable as much as any other decent pistol.

The only other option would be one of the S&W DAO autopistols or the Ruger ala Glock offering.

When I am fully set up in my home, the night stand has a Bible (NET version) and an old style S&W Model 19. I find great comfort in both.

Flashlight, Cellphone and 4 inch barrel revolver with .38 & .357 capabilities. As he gets older and possibly arthritic he'll be able to maintain the same weapon. Are you sure Dad will be able to clean and it and cycle mags. Keep it simple.

get dad a S&W model 64 with a 4 inch barrel and pachmayer presentation grips loaded with 148gr DEWC @ 775 - 825 fps.

Please do not take this wrong, but unless he is planning to miss alot, avoid the pistol and opt for a revolver. I am all for pistols mind you, but guns are tools and you need the right tool for the right job.

Revolvers in 38/357, primarily 38 of course. Perfection Simplified.

I agree w/ vytoland above.
