CZ For concealed carry

Well, I'm finally turning 21 this year. I'm taking my CWP course in a couple weeks and then I turn 21 4 short months later. That means it's time to start saving for my carry piece and birthday present.

I have a cz75 BD and I love it. It fits me very well and I shoot it well. It's just too big. I've decided I want a DA/SA CZ in 9mm that can take my regular CZ75 mags. I'm thinking my choices will be between the P01 and the RAMI. I like guns where I can get a full four finger grip and the RAMI may be difficult with the flush mag, but it also gets very hot in summer in south Carolina (and Florida where I hope to move back after school) so that will be an issue at some point.

I avoid polymer guns if I can, so aluminum or steel is what I'm looking for. Price is relatively important to. I will be willing to invest in a decent holster and belt.

For those who have both or experience with both, how do they compare? Trigger, sights, recoil, grip, accuracy, how they carry etc. Do the actual street prices vary or are they similar? Am I missing options in the line up?

My local rental range has only the full sized Cz75

Thanks

Amigo, with what you've laid out as your requirements, the PCR is your ticket.

Alloy frame, decocker, low mount Novak style sights, loaded chamber indicator, 14 round stock magazine, will accept any larger capacity CZ 75 series magazine, (not the P-07 or -09), and I have often said it is the best metal CCW pistol ever built, bar none. I carried one for a long time. If you aren't going to mount a laser/light on an M-3 rail, then the PCR is the way to go. Mine were very accurate and reliable with anything I stuffed in them, duty, factory, handload, cast lead, you name it.
As for hot weather, and you want to invest in a good rig...well, have I got a deal for you...

That's the Down Under, a rig I am VERY familiar with, use it during the hot months in Arizona and that heavy thick sweat shield works like a charm! Add this;

A Rock Steady gun bet, and you are set. Once again, personal experience - I haven't worn a belt OTHER than a Rock Steady for more than 6 years now, n and off duty. Great looking and tough.

Here is my CZ SP-01 Phantom, (with standard 15 round magazine), in a High Noon Down Under with straps on a High Noon Rock Steady gun belt. 'Nuff said.

I expected a response from yourself sooner or later. Is the only difference between the PCR and P01 the rail on bottom? It's tempting to have the ability to mount a light.

Your bottom picture doesn't seem to have shown up

Why would you want a light on your carry piece? It's going to add weight and bulk. If you want a light you may as well go full size and use a good belt.

The pcr has an alloy frame. So the difference between that and the p01, is the rail and steel vs alloy frame.

Sounds like the RAMI is the place you want to be.

Also don't be scared of CZ offerings like the p-07. It's not your normal plastic pistol.

I like my p-09 as well as my 75....I'd really like to add a RAMI or 07, and it'll probably be the 07 since I can find those in stock.

I avoided "plastic" guns too until I opted to get one for a specific reason. I quickly realized they do work and work well. Most guns in my carry rotation (got a dozen) are metal but the polymer ones do get used. My most recent addition is the single stack S&W M&P Shield 9. I've installed the Magguts magazine spring and follower so I carry it with 9 rounds.

As far as what you are looking for, consider also the (Turkish) clones of the CZ's. I have the TriStar C100 in 9mm which is the CZ compact platform with alloy frame and 15 round magazine. It looks and feels like my CZ-75BD but in a smaller package and can be had for under $400. The C100 is my primary EDC.

P-01 is also an alloy frame. You're thinking of the steel-framed compact model (with manual safety).

The main benefit to the rail on a P-01 is if it doubles as a HD gun. I personally have an SP-01 for that role, so the PCR suits me just fine as a dedicated carry gun, but you want the rail if it's going to fill multiple roles.

Thanks for the comments.

On polymer guns: I have shot several that worked very well (the Shield that you mention, The Glock 42, and others) but I have a bias towards metal. I won't put plastic guns down but I don't like them, and if I were to get one it would be one of the smaller ones mentioned for the purpose of light concealed carry. I don't like the CZ line of polymer guns at all. They don't have any of that CZ magic to me.

On the light: I'm not sure if I would carry concealed with a light. There's a growing school of thought towards adding a light to your EDC and I'm not sure I follow that school of thought, but I'd hate to buy a fairly expensive gun and then decide I wanted the option. I think I'm more likely to mount it when putting it in the proverbial nightstand or maybe to keep in my car, particularly at night (I do work second shift so I'm coming home around midnight). I think I would lean towards having the rail so I had the option.

On the Tri-star/Turkish guns: I was a salesperson at Academy for 9 months and I sold quite a number of the Tristars. I never got to fire or even dry fire them, but I did like the feel as well as the fit and finish. Felt very close to how I expected a CZ to feel. I never encountered any with a decocker mechanism (my preferred method) and I would probably take the opportunity to buy the real CZ as I have a love affair with them.

So I'm really no closer to choosing between the couple guns I'm floating between. I really like the SP-01 because it seems like the full size 75 with the fat trimmed down to bare minimum for a more compact package. However, the size of the RAMI just seems more concealable. How does the trigger compare on the two models?

I agree with Armoredman. Based on that criteria the PCR is the way to go.

I owned a RAMI(.40 S&W) for a time and IME it was a heavy, clunky, gun that really didn't give you any capacity for the weight.

I have heard a couple of trainers say that it's a bad idea to use full size magazines in a compact gun under stress because you can slam the magazine in too hard and damage it or the extractor.

Based on that if you go with the full sized magazines you might want to look into something like an X-Grip

Final thought, if you 75B has a safety get a PCR with a safety, if a decocker get one with a decocker

Thanks moonglum. I don't really plan to carry the full sized magazines (maybe one if I fill like carrying particularly heavy, but I doubt it) but I do like the ability to use other magazines at the range and for training. I am glad to hear about your experience with the RAMI. My 75 does have the decocker now. I looked extra hard for one that did have it.

PCR/P-01 seems to make the most sense for you; it really comes down to whether or not you want the rail.

I have the RAMI, but have been considering selling it. I can't really explain it, but it feels more chunky than it should be given the dimensions. It's purely subjective on my part - I just feel like it occupies a weird middle ground between a single-stack subcompact for deep concealment, and the mid-size.

I like my cZ 75 Compact, but with a steel frame it gets heavy by the end of the day. To remedy the situation I purchased a Tri Star C100 and the aluminum frame makes a difference. The C100 uses the same magazines as the Compact which is a plus.

How about a CZ P-01 Omega? Aluminum frame, rail, takes full-size CZ magazines. Can easily be switched from decocker to safety if you ever change your mind. It also has a little bit straighter trigger than the P-01, which was my one complaint about that gun.

Or if money is no object, get yourself a Pro Tek II from the custom shop!

I have owned a number of P-01s. I've been able to find holsters pretty easily and I really haven't felt the rail added that much bulk/weight to the pistol, nor do I think it really detracts from the pistol's appearance if aesthetics were an issue. I like the option to add an light. As always, YMMV.

I went the cajun gun works route. Got the carry package, short reset trigger (which leaves sig in the dirt), 85 combat trigger and hammer, and a set of metpro sights. I chose the P-01 but going back I should have chosen the PCR. The PCR is much sexier, better lines, and I don't like lights on guns.

Whoops. Here it is, the High Noon Down Under with straps holding a CZ SP-01 Phantom on a High Noon Rock Steady gun belt. Old photo but the same combo works every day it's used.

Ditto on Cajun Gun Works - they put the Pro Package on my P-09 and it is great.

Are you wanting a compact because everyone else carries compacts? With a good holster and belt your CZ75 will do you just fine, I CC my CZ75 SP01 (a 43oz gun) daily on a crossbreed belt and a holster I made myself. I'm 5'7" 155lbs and wear a medium shirt, it prints just a little bit but not enough for untrained eyes to notice. And I don't find it uncomfortable in the least bit. You have the added benefit of having more rounds on hand in a package that is generally easier to to shoot accurately versus smaller guns.
