CZ fans, help me compare apples and oranges...

If you were to be given one of the two options for free, and you could not resell them which would it be and why?

CZ 75b 9mm

Or

CZ P09 duty 9mm

Background: I'm in the market for a 9mm and prefer a steel frame but I'll take what I can get. Really I just want something that is quality. I want a 9mm for economical reasons and a full size to compensate for my single stack .380 which is currently my only handgun. I will be carrying it in the winter and when going into the more shady parts of Detroit. Weight is not an issue; recoil management is an important factor.

Why I ask this is I went into Cabela's today to look at the 75 and they didn't have it and the P09 got me thinking. I like the 19+1 capacity, but it feels slightly bulky and may be hard to draw smoothly. The price is about $120 less, and it is a quality and accurate gun from what I've read (more so than the 75?)

Anyway, advice is apreciated

I don't have a CZ P09. Can't comment on that.

I do have a CZ 75, a pre B with rounded trigger guard and no firing pin block.

It fits my hand like it was made for it. I can shoot it better than any of my other pistols. If I had to get rid of all but one, that would be the one I keep.

I have both and that's a tough decision. For pure shooting fun, it's hard to beat a 75B. If I'm headed to the range and just want to enjoy a day of shooting, it will most likely be one of the 75Bs or pre-Bs in the bag. But, if it's a gun that's going to be used for either home defense or for carry, I like the P09. The trigger is easier to work on and with a bit of polish, cleans up quite nicely. It has a rail which gives it an edge as a home defense pistol. Plus, with the factory mag extensions, you can reliably run them as a 21+1 pistol.

Things to consider are that with the P09, magazines are crazy expensive. I've not seen them below $41 each anywhere, where as with the 75B, you can sometimes find them as low as about $20. Also, the 75B gives you more sight options as well as the ability to swap grips out for a nice set of VZs. Also, if you are so inclined, CajunGunWorks sells parts for both, but the parts for the 75B can give you an almost 1911 quality trigger. Not run of the mill 1911, but top notch quality can be approached with the CGW parts.

If you go for the 75B, add a good set of sights (stock suck), put a nice set of VZ grips on it some day and eventually do the full Pro package from CGW, you will end up with a gun that you will most likely never want to sell. The P09 is a fantastic service pistol, but I don't think that any of my CGW tuned P07s or P09s will stand up even close to the shooting experience with my tuned pre-Bs or 75Bs.

So, in my opinion, the P09 for duty but the 75B for the joy of shooting.

Are you going to carry your 9mm in the summer as well? If you are considering it, I would suggest that you locate a CZ 75D PCR. They are easily concealed in summer as well as winter. They are 9mm. They are fairly lightweight.

Between the two I would choose the P-09. I like the polymer CZ guns though and chose the P-07 when last I was shopping. They are a more modern design and are very well made guns. Very accurate. JoeMustang on YouTube has some great long distance bullseye shooting videos of the P-09 and P-07 at 100 yards.

I'm not a fan of the CZ poly guns, but I do like their alloy framed guns.

If weight is not a consideration go for the steel frame CZ75B.

I like the steel frame full size CZs. The poly frame CZs don't do it for me.

Given your guidelines and my uses,
The 75 b, would be my choice.

While I don't have a 75 b or a p-09,
I do have a p-07,and a single action well tuned 85 combat.
Indy tim is correct in that a well tuned single action comes close to a 1911 trigger, and my views closely mirror them.

I have kadet kits for both, and the 75 kadet is as nice as my ruger tuned mk 3.
The kadet for the p-07 is a nice training tool, but there is no comparison.

For range and target use, id take the 75.

But if the guidelines were diffrent, and a compact pistol with a rail, and the uses specified were carry, home defense, and range, it would change to the p-07 for me.

The more I shoot the p-07, the more I like it for the role I would have for it to fill.
It is a solid choice.
if I found another p-07 i would be tempted.

Like you said though, apples to oranges comparison.

Cool cool thanks guys; I'll probably getting the 75 here sometime in the next couple weeks. Our distributor at work just has the model with the decocker, but I'm alright with that. Anyway, thanks for the input, and happy thanksgiving:)

I've shot both 75 the P-09. I personally preferred shooting the P-09. From my experience:

P-09:
- the slide was very stiff, hard to rack
- bulky feel
- nice to shoot in my hands

75:
- easier to conceal
- sexier look (if you care)

I recommend trying both at a range somewhere. Since you want to carry in the winter, added bulk should not be a problem. Rack the slide on a new P-09 a few times, and if it's not too stiff for you, I'd go for it.

They are both easy to disassemble/clean and will treat you well.

Don't get the decocker model, 75bd. I had one and while it worked well, getting a crisp and short SA trigger is a lot more work than with a 75b.

I truly wish my P01 had a safety instead.:o

For carry, I would choose a decocker version myself. As I prefer no manual safety on a carry piece.

If it was an option, the P-07 is a smaller easier to conceal pistol, very close to glock 19 size.

Order the 75B, PCR, or P-01 on line and have it shipped to your FFL. Nothing wrong with the P-09, or P-07, I just like their steel, and alloy guns better due to the ergonomics (grips mostly).
