I am looking for a truck gun in 223 caliber. I often see coyotes and other critters when I am riding back and fourth to work. I looked at the cz 527 carbine and the savage series 10 precision carbine. Nobody around here has either one in stock. Can anybody give me any info on either one of these guns. Or something else that you shoot. Am looking for a short barreled gun. I like the Ruger ranch rifle but I reload and hate to loose cases. Thanks

I have a CZ 527 Varmint and a Savage Model 25 Varmint, both in .223. They both shoot well. Personal I prefer the CZ single set trigger. Both shoot sub MOA. The Savage was less expensive.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard Youth model in .223 with synthetic stock that I carry in my pickup around the ranch. The combo of the short stock and 20" barrel makes it a lot easier to maneuver when you see a critter. It is super accurate also. I don't like synthetic, but for the purpose that this rifles serves it works great.

I also have a Mini 14, but prefer the Vanguard for my pickup gun.

I have the CZ 527 Varmint and my son and two different shooting buddies have Savage 10 FCP-Ks.
Both models are very accurate and shoot about just about as accurately.
The difference in accuracy among all 4 rifles is very small, in the hundredths of an inch for the average of 25 favorite loads over more than 50 groups each. All of their top 25 loads average around 0.360 inches at 100 yards.

The CZ is lighter and smaller. The Savage is steadier because of its muzzle brake and longer barrel.
My CZ and the Savage 10 FCP-Ks shoot bullets from 40 grains to 65 grains very accurately and 35 grain and 69 about 0.1 inches larger. They even shoot 77 grain SMKs around .7 inch groups at 100 yards. Not bad for 1:9 twist barrels.

I just bought a Savage 10 FCP-K in .308 so I like the Savage too.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

CZ is too nice for a truck gun and the Savage is too heavy. Find yourself a Marlin XS7. I have one in .223 and its a phenomenal shooter with a great trigger. All for under $400 OTD. Dont blow $700 (CZ) on a truck gun. The Marlin is the best cost vs performance rifle on the market, period:).

I have a CZ 527 carbine,it's too nice of a rifle for a truck gun.Check out the Mossberg MVP Patrol in .223.It also has a 1/9 twist barrel for heavier bullets. The CZ has 1/12 twist.

Thanks for all the replies, I will check out the Marlin, and the Mossberg.I had a Marlin 22lr and it was a good shooter. I would rather not spend a bunch of money on a truck gun but I want something that is dependable, accurate, and short enough to move around in my truck. Thanks

I really like the Mossberg MVP Patrol, but I am not crazy about the trigger. I have never liked the safety triggers. I'm going to see if I can find a used MVP. It is shorter than the Savage so it would be a good truck gun. Thanks

The CZ Action is more reliable and less prone to problem, not that the Savage is bad mind you.
The CZ is a scaled down Mauser with a claw extractor and is a superb example of good design.
I have made a few custom rifles on the 527 and I have to say I am quite impressed with them.
