CZ 527- All-Purpose carbine?

Hey guys! Well... I want a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39mm. Here is a picture of one, this is NOT my rifle but I want to get one and set it up just like this with a lightweight variable power scope and a sling:

Cool huh? I think so! :) The reason I want this rifle is I see a lot of potential in it as an all-purpose, multi-use carbine. For me personally, I own two SKS rifles and have a bunch of steel-cased cheap 7.62x39mm ammo laying around... and that's exactly what the CZ 527 rifle was designed to fire. It's bore diameter is actually .311 if I remember correctly, and supposedly the gun was designed with steel cased ammo in mind. This gun has gained a reputation for excellent accuracy even with the cheapest surplus ammo, the same stuff than an AK or SKS will sling out in 3-5 MOA groups this thing can put them in 1-2 MOA groups or less.

So that's pretty awesome. I LOVE my SKS rifles, but they aren't target guns. They are super enjoyable to shoot, but it can be hard to strive for maximum performance just due to the design, handling, and inherent accuracy in the guns. They are combat rifles, and they feel and shoot like it. I just think it would be awesome to have a gun that shoots the same cheap ammo but is capable of quite a bit better accuracy with the same stuff and handles/feels like a classic target or hunting rifle and is much lighter weight and more handy.

Now, other than just me wanting one for those reasons, I also think this would be a good all-around hunting/survival/SHTF/defensive gun as well. Now sure, it's a gun of compromises. It's 7.62x39mm chambering is effective for defense out to at least 300 yards, and effective for hunting out to about 150 yards, and the gun loads from 5 round detachable box magazines. The rifle also weighs just under 6 lbs OTB, with a lightweight scope and a sling I have seen other get the entire loaded gun under seven pounds. It also supposedly handles like a dream as most of the weight (magazine/scope/bolt) are all in the center of the gun. This little rifle just looks like it will be so much easier to carry around and manuever than an SKS in an everyday hunting or SHTF scenario.

Also, it looks VERY benign and would look far better to authorities if they saw one with it vs. walking with an AK-47 or AR-15. Now as for firepower in a defensive role, it's 5 shots of 7.62x39mm in a fast smooth bolt action with manageable recoil for follow up shots and the ability to reload quickly with spare magazines. A sturmgewehr or minigun it is not, but without a doubt I don't think that would be anything to sneeze at and it sure would make me duck!

So without rambling on, as you can see the CZ 527 is a high quality, high accuracy, very lightweight and compact rifle and shoots cheap ammo that I have plenty of on hand anyway. With it's excellent handling and shooting characteristics I think it would make a fine all purpose carbine for all sorts of uses. I just need some feedback on this before I make the purchase.

So what do you guys think of this rifle? Should I consider something else, do you own or have had any personal experiences with the CZ 527? I'm looking forward to your responses,

Thanks! :D

We must be cut of the same cloth dude! I picked up a CZ527 at the lgs the other day. That is one nice little gun! It's in .222, which I've heard nothing but praise about. I'm typically not a 22 caliber person though, always had something in 30 cal as my go-to rifle. Bigger holes equal more better right?

Seriously though I think it's a great idea for a rifle. For most all the reasons you listed. A ten round stick mag would be nice. I'm a big wood stock bolt action proponent myself. Especially with nice irons on top. Chamber it in basically the cheapest centerfire round available? Shoot yeah!

Now to throw a curveball out there..

I'd like one in 5.45x39mm! A friend of mine & I were actually discussing converting one within the last hour. More effective than 5.56 & less $$ for ammunition. If they could make this shoot 7N6 sub 2moa, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I'd be a great walk around rifle for beer cans to coyotes.

Then have another one in 300 blackout. 16" threaded 5/8ths of course with tall sights to clear your can. I've got an AAC Micro Seven that's my favorite gun period but it's ugly as a shaved dog's butt! A CZ527 in 300 would be classy as all get out.

x39mm bolt rifle

Don't have a CZ, but do have a Ruger MKII so chambered, and agree, such a package is a very practical GP rifle, the limiting factor being only the nature of its "intermediate " cartridge. If you can live with 30-30 type ballistics, a x39mm bolt will serve one just fine.

Mines light & portable, (20" bbl), durable (synthetic/stainless) and is indeed more accurate than any of my semi's so chambered. I have not run any steel case ammo through the litttle bolt rifle, but it is fully 1.5MOA capable with domestic brass cased fodder. Very mild shooting too. A good trigger, far superior to any SKS/AK. A simple and safe manual of arms. A Leupold 2-7x tops it off.

I'm surprised that The Rem M7 has not come out in x39. And the now Zastava Mini-mausers are available in x39 too. Savage did some in the 10 series as well.

I had the 527 LUX. It was stolen unfortunately.

I liked many aspects of the rifle, hunted often and alot with it. It was a compilation of compromises however. The bolt handle and knob were just a little too small for my tastes, and a 30mm scope sort of dwarfed the little critter, making it a bit top heavy. That and I had to recontour the bolt handle to clear a scope mounted properly close to the receiver rather than in high rings.

I liked that it was very light and pointed well. I never seemed to have POI shifts as it heated up. It was quite accurate. I liked the detachable magazines, some of which required a little finishing with a stone as the feed lips were a bit rough for my tastes. It came with the curved trigger shoe, but $70 got a new trigger group, which was an easy install, with the more or less straight trigger shoe.

I would really like to get a similar rifle with good iron sights like what one finds on the Garand or M14, without needing to get one of those crazy micrometer target sights.

The European Winchester 94 .... lightweight, fast, mid-powered repeater. Good stuff, Maynard. But then there's that detachable mag though....

I had the 527 LUX. It was stolen unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that. :( I've had 3 guns and a bow stolen, too.

The 527's are a dandy rifle...
The only thing about them I did not like was the dovetail arangement for the ring mounts..
With a adapter to a 1 piece weaver base you have better ring selections and spacings/heights...

It was solved easily enough by dip products :)

That's a neat idea! Since the import ban though I find cheap 5.45x39mm for the same price as cheap .223 steel cased stuff. It was nice when just a year or two ago you could find 5.45mm for $0.14 a shot! The .222 is a great cartridge and you are well served by it. :)

Well I'm on the hunt for this little bird, can't wait to get one! :)

I've been accused of liking the CZ 527M in 7.62x39mm...no idea why...

One of the several scopes I tried,

Replaced the fixed rear iron with a Marbles adjustable silver soldered on a hand made base,

One group shot with scope,

One really nice group shot with scope,

What we did to it, new very custom stock for the CSR, Camp/Scout Rifle, with spare magazine holder,

What it can do,(rested), at 200 yards,

Standing,

And how it works when the shooter is having a bad day. :D

Id give up all my rifles before I give this one up - it is perfect for every normal activity I can think of, and not too shabby for really bad times bug out - that WOULD be when I would like to see a ten round magazine made. Can't get any interest in that yet.:(

Love the 527M Carbine - it is all that and a bag of chips.;)

One popular conversion, I'm told, is 6.5 Grendel, very easy to do conversion...intrigues me, but I'd have to get another 527M before I did that - I like the one I have just the way it is. :D

Oh man I didn't even think of 6.5G! That'd be neat, looks like a very efficient cartridge. Only thing is it also looks kinda like a boutique cartridge. Once you had a collection of brass I don't figure it'd be bad though. I got a big soft spot for anything 6.5mm! :)

& I didn't buy the .222 527.. it was hard to put down though! I would just end up converting it to blackout & I already have three of those...

Out of curiousity: what's the twist rate on .222? I wonder if it'd stabalize ss109 bullets a guy can pick up cheap!

The .223/5.56mm version is now 1-9 twist. I really don't know about the 527 Lux in .222 Rem, but if you call 1-800-955-4486 tomorrow morning and ask I guarantee someone there will know.

A fantastic action

Perfect light rifle for deer sized game. I'd like to see them offer in something like 6.5 mm or other micro length cartridges.

bullets

For me, the best x39 bullet was the Sierra 135 gr SSP (single shot pistol) bullet. It was made .308 dia, but both my serious x39 rifles are bored .308, so no issue there.

Like all things that are ideal, they stopped making it.

Sierra at one time made a 135 Match King that might have milked the absolute accuracy from the x39, I never tried any. I have shot 150 SMK's from the bolt rifle, but seating depth was an issue. They shot not much better than the 135 hunting bullet.

There are some .308/130 slugs out there, but one is flat nosed, the other of varmint construction. I think Hornady sells a 130...not sure.

Keep hoping they bring the 135 back. Would work well with the .30 AR too.

Is the 527 a 308 or 311 bore, I prolly still wouldn't buy one as I'm set up for 300 BLK but the ability to shoot 308 dia bullets accuratly opens up a lot of possibilities with all the new bullets my attention whore 300 has being thown it's way.

That little rifle will serve you as well or better than a 30-30 lever action served your grand dad, which is to say it will do very well.

There is no such thing as an "all purpose rifle" but a general purpose rifle is a vary real possibility.

The little CZ is a very good weapon. But a good man holding it is going to be the real hinge pin. 98% of the situation pivots on the man and not on his weapon.
