cheaper than dirt sells a concealed weapons badge an permit holder, well the badge looks like a sheriff or police badge, the problem is folks get stopped for a traffic stop an they get out an they flash this badge to let the officer know they are carrying concealed, well they get arrested for posing as an officer, because that's what they do, get out a vechile an flash their badge, well from a distance it looks like theirs, alot of folks been getting into trouble over this,i don't own one an don't want one,you would think they would have better sense than to do this,i would wait till the officer was standing next to me an tell him I am carrying an I have a permit then I would slowly take it out to show him,i would be inclinded to agree with the sheriff's it would appear to look like another officer what do all of you think

I don't know of 'a lot of folks been getting into trouble over this' but I generally recommend against carrying a badge unless you are a commissioned officer. Heck if I get stopped for traffic, I don't haul a badge out and tell the guy I am a cop. Frankly I think flashing a badge, upon being stopped, is not gonna win you any donut points whether you're a CCW, off-duty cop or whatever.

This used to be one of the hot topics on gun forums. Ranked in there with I hate Glocks, 45 vs 9, etc.

It died down when the general wisdom was that it was a stupid idea.

A search might bring up numerous threads.

A couple thoughts on the subject ;
1. I would be interested in seeing any documentation relative to any actual arrests based on displaying a "concealed carry badge".
2. The idea of purchasing such a badge in my opinion is foolish and a waste of money.
3. This thread will be closed shortly being non firearm related.

It's somewhat related to CCW, and it's worth bringing up again for educational purposes.

Every three or four years, I see a spate of folks with these. They're usually hawked at the gun shows with promises that the bearer will be lauded as the good guy, sheep dog, or whatever.

In reality, it doesn't work that way. While a tinplate badge may not be cause for criminal charges, it certainly isn't going to endear me to the authorities. If I'm involved in a situation involving my sidearm, it could be used to argue that I have a vigilante mindset.

I simply see no constructive purpose in wearing one.

If I remember correctly a few years ago there was a news article linked here at TFL about a guy who was charged for flashing one of those.

If you have to carry one, do yourself a favor and NEVER flash the damned thing.

I'm not sure where one might cross the line into actually impersonating an officer, but wearing a similar badge and carrying a visible firearm sets the stage. If the barista offers me a free coffee because she's under the impression that I'm an officer, could that qualify?

And yes, for some reason, every person I've seen with a concealed carry badge has been carrying their gun openly.

I got news for you, if you are involved in a shooting and are in "plain clothes" the arriving uniform cops will point guns at you, disarm you and "secure" you until they know who is who and what is what. this goes for off duty cops as well unless the town is small enough that on duty cops immediately recognize you as another cop.

I fully expect to be disarmed and detained by responding units until they can confirm who I am, badges mean nothing without confirmation.... to a point they are useless if involved in an off duty shooting.

besides, you don't want the image painted on you as a copwannabe, a vigilante, or whatever..... ccw badges are not recommended in my view.

upon the cops arrival you make sure you do not have a gun in your hand or anything else that might be confused as a weapon, do as you are told and without any lip, things will come out in the wash if you are right and legal.

and don't feel bad, there is a market though very small for nation ccw badges aimed at retired cops or something... the badge has HR218 national concealed carry LEOSA or something on it; meaningless.

carry well.

would wait till the officer was standing next to me an tell him I am carrying an I have a permit then I would slowly take it out to show him,

I have to disagree with that, unless the State you reside in requires you to inform the officer you are carrying. Never take a gun out on an officer unless instructed to do so. Its a good way to get yourself shot.

I have been stopped a couple of times over the past couple of years. Once because I was speeding and once because I was driving my car that was out of place for the neighborhood, returning home from a late party with my wife. In the case where I was speeding the officer never asked if I had a concealed weapon in the car or upon my person but as he asked for my license and registration I did mention that I was a retired Government Agent and he pretty much said to pay better attention to my speed and wished me a good day. In the second instance, the officer very cautiously approached my vehicle. I put on the interior lights and had both hands on the steering wheel. He asked if I owned the car to which I said I did. His next question was, "Do you have any firearms in the car?" I said I did. Further, I said I was a retired Federal Agent and he said have a good night. Ya gotta love professional courtesy.

There is no requirement in my State to inform an officer that I am armed. My son is a Sheriff and he tells me that if he stops someone, he usually asks if they are armed. He will then secure the weapon until he has finished writing a ticket or warning and then hand them back the weapon when the stop is finished. However, if he stops a car that is suspicious and they say they do not have any weapons, he will ask them to vacate the car and ask if he can search the vehicle. If weapons are found, the can of worms has been opened and it is a situation you would not want to be in.

I'm just a civilian but I would imagine anyone in uniform takes wearing it seriously and would not appreciate someone wearing parts of the uniform without authorization or earning it.

Plus, since they are so easy to get what possible purpose can they serve? My CHL card has my photo and holograms to identify me and authorization. Nothing else will.

If someone flashed a badge I bet an officer can tell fairly quickly if you are LEO and if not then the badge is very likely considered an intent to mislead and they will be more suspicious. I can't see how a CHL badge can have any positive value.

There is a book series that had "sheepdog" team running around flashing such badges and civilians were "Our heroes are here to save us!" Pathetic hubris and ignorance.

I wouldn't waste the money on a fake badge when I have my Sterling Silver issued badge with a Retired banner on it.

Since having some sort of badge seems very important to you, would you do it if you lost your Sterling Silver issued badge with a Retired banner on it?

If armsmaster720 lost his sterling silver badge with a retired banner, I'm sure his agency will help him buy another (out of his pocket now and not the agency).

Re: CCW badges, I'd rather buy a box of bullets. CCW screams wannabe or mall ninja to most guys I know (sworn and non sworn).

1)Getting out of your car at a traffic stop is a very bad idea in most jurisdictions. A few exceptions exist.

2)I've heard of exactly one case of someone getting in trouble for this and it did not involve a traffic stop. Even if one did, it's a long way from "a lot of folks been getting into trouble over this"

3)I hope to God you're talking about taking out the PERMIT to show him and not the gun. Even so, the best advice at a traffic stop is to (turn on interior lights at night before you stop) put your hands on the steering wheel and not do A DAMN THING until or unless the officer tells you to and then VERBALIZE your intended actions before making them. Inform the officer that you are carrying if and only if the law requires it or they ask.

4)Now is a good time to consider where you keep the ID and other paperwork that will be required at a traffic stop. Informing the officer that you're carrying and it's on your right hip and, oh by the way, my wallet is in my right back pocket, will make things uncomfortable.

badge vs police

in the state of ms. when you get stopped, no matter what you are carrying your lic. and concealed weapons permit in they ask you to remove them,so all in all that stupid badge don't mean didly squat !!!!! unless your one of them folks that want to show off, like when you go some where anthey ask for pic id an you open your case an theres your lic. along with this pretty gold red white an blue badge that says concealed weapon permit,
in ms. they frown on folks getting out of their cars, they figure you are trying to hide something, stay inside till told to get out, first question are you carrying then lic.regestration, everybody carrys we have the right to carry law,80 % of them are concealed, but im glad you guys agree with ne the badge is a bad idea an should be taken off the market

Best thang to do with a cc badge is to hang at a target and use it as a target. Do nothing to draw attention to your self and IF your ever have to show anything to an officer let it be ONLY your CCL or what ever your state calls it.

captneil19 "unless your one of those folks" !! Never carry any extra advertising . No red white and blue badge , nothing OR your some kind of nut case that maybe should not have a Conceal carry license at all. .

Everyone should already know to stay in your car long before you can carry a firearm legaly too.

How is a CCW "badge" any different from the tin star that said "Sherriff" that I had when I was 6?
