Curious about a trade...

I adore my S&W 586. Truly, it's a wonderful gun. The blued steel finish isn't used anymore but it looks fantastic. The overall fit and finish is phenomenal on the gun, and it just feels good to hold and shoot. It's the first handgun I've shot with my dad, and it's the one he gave me.

However... I can't use it as a CCW because it's a large framed gun, and it's got a 6" barrel. The thing is HUGE for CCW. I keep it by my bedside as a home defense weapon and that's about it. What I need is a more compact gun that I can use as a CCW AND use for work while working for an armored car company.

I've been looking for buyers, but I've also been looking into trades. Would it be reasonable to trade for a S&W M&P or a used Sig? I'm just trying to get feelers out on what I could get as a straight trade and ideas for a future gun. I'd like a semi auto, either 9mm or .45.

You'll get about half the perceived value of the 586 on a trade and you'll end up with something you want, but that your father did not gift you, if that matters to you.

That would matter to me.

I'd start saving and buy a S&W, either an M&P or even (heaven forbid) a Sigma or a Glock and keep the 586. Dad's don't last forever you know.

YMMV

True about the sentimental value. I asked him for his opinion prior to making the decision to sell or trade it, and he gave a firm go ahead. We're both more attached to the Winchester 30-30 and Ruger 10/22 he also gave me. And I can take the Winchester deer hunting.

Give up a Starbucks here, a beer there, a lunch out, etc. Buy yourself a CCW firearm.
Don't do something you will some day regret!!!

Currently it only sits on by my bedside. It's too large for me to carry as a CCW or on the job. I'd gladly spend the cash on a new M&P if student loans and other bills weren't clamping down on any money I had. Using the money gotten from selling or trading is about the only way I can get a different gun.

If you have to get rid of it, sell it. Don't trade it. You will only get about half what it's worth.

I will still trade a gun from time to time. But I only do it with guns I don't really care about at all, and I'm willing to take that hit.

I'd do everything I could to keep any blued Smith & Wesson.

Maybe I should clarify... trade with a private party rather than a gun shop. I asked about that at a local shop and the owner stated flat out I'd get far less than what it's worth because they need to make a profit as a business.

Check out Express Police Supply, they have LE trade-in Glock 23's for $340 right now and you can find used mags and duty/carry gear for those things everywhere. http://www.ombexpress.com/p-6780-used-glock-23-2nd-gen-with-1-13rnd-mag.aspx Work out a way to buy one of those and keep your 586 for the sentimental value and the fact that they don't make them anymore, it'll be the first handgun your kid ever shoots with his Dad and the one his Dad gives him. Plus you can hunt deer with it.

One thing I've learned in life is that it's much easier to keep something than to try and get it back later. If you get rid of this gun you'll regret it. Someday you might find another nice 6" 586 but it won't this one, it'll just be another nice gun that doesn't mean anything to you.

Oh yeah, your Dad is only agreeing with you on trading it because that's what you say you need to do. He doesn't really mean it. Trust me on that, I'm a Dad.

Sell it, don't trade it if you must. Personally, I'd think long and hard about getting rid of a gun like that not even mentioning that it was a gift from your father.

My Dad owns a 586 and it too was the first handgun I shot. While Dad is still alive and well I know at one point it will be mine and I certainly wouldn't consider letting it go.

It might take a while, but save up. You can find lots of good CCW guns for between $300 to $400. If you go used, even less.

Don't trade or sell it.. save a few bucks and get a decent 9mm for ccw there are a few out there that can be had for less than 300 dollars I have 3 9mm's that I paid less than 300 for and all of them run great. I would highly recomend the pf9 for ccw its my daily carry and you can buy em new for 300...

Donot trade give it to me. I will keep it in safe keeping for you till you save up enough money for what you want .DO NOT get rid of any of your first time firearms that you have fired .They will hold memorys of a life time .I know I sold some and regreted to this day .Things that your family gives you you try to keep then as long as you can once they are gone they are gone forever.

I'd agree with everything that's been said to a point. I sold one of my father's shotguns to purchase a rifle and don't regret it at all. My reasoning was that I never used the shotgun, all it was doing was collecting dust. My father had no sentimental attachment to any of his guns and would sell or trade them on a regular basis. When I first started thinking of selling the shotgun, I realized my father would have told me to sell it and buy the rifle I wanted. He would have been happy to know that I got rid of it for something I shoot regularly. I still have a bunch of his guns that I would never get rid of, but I had no use for that shotgun so it made the decision easy. If the 586 serves no purpose for you then sell it outright and get what you want. However, if you like the 586 and still shoot it, you will regret getting rid of it although it might be several years before you realize it. Trust me, I've gotten rid of a few that I thought I could do without but now regret selling them (my SMLE and Ruger P90 come to mind).

I don't see a problem with selling it. Your Dad is still alive and he said there's no reason why you should keep it. You have other sentimental guns that you can reminisce with. I'm sure he'd much rather see you with something you can actually USE rather than a hand cannon that just sits around.

Exactly.

while working for an armored car company.

Are you already employed as such?

Already employed. They'll issue a S&W 686 with a 4" barrel (ironically) for carrying on the job, or allow me the option of using my own gun. Can't take my 586 out for it since the 6" barrel makes it a bit cumbersome, and I definitely couldn't use it as a CCW. I was planning on getting a new gun that could double as both.

Seems as though the majority is saying hold onto the gun for now. My buddy Mike suggested selling off my Ruger 10/22 and all the ammo and he'd buy my paintball gun for parts once he's got the cash for it. I'll see what that could net me and weigh the options.

+1, and I recently did the exact same thing the OP is considering- I sold a 6" M586 to finance the purchase of a new M&P. Sacrilege? Maybe, but the M586 sat and sat in my safe because I couldn't carry it.

Thoughts on part of the OP's question:
Would it be reasonable to trade for a S&W M&P or a used Sig?
  • Like-new M&P: yes.
  • M&P with some wear and tear: Conditional, value is less than your M586. I would expect some extras in the deal, e.g. holsters, extra mags, etc.
  • Used metal-frame SIG such as P226, P229, P239: Yes, in fact, if the SIG has options, you're probably coming out ahead.
  • New or used plastic-frame SIG such as P2022, P250: Conditional, value is a good deal less, I would expect substantial extras in the deal. One exception: if the trade was for a P250 "2Sum" package with 2 frames and barrels, I would jump on it.
All IMHO of course. :)

Unless you are absolutely strapped for cash keep it. I am somewhat of a sentimentalist and it was your father's and he gave it to you. If possible keep it and buy a used CCW if you want a used one.

Yup, pretty strapped for cash. No other way around it. Dad called earlier and I asked for hessa input. He said to go ahead and sell it for something I can use. He likes the rifle better anyway. I had to laugh a little because my dad has always been practical about tools, and he looks at guns the same way.

Well, thanks for the replies, gents. Talking to dad helped me out in the decision because he made it clear that I should have something that I could use regularly instead of just at the range. He thought it looks nice, and while he did give it as a gift when we moved, he would prefer I had something I could carry regularly since that's what I'm choosing to do. If he could, he'd get me a new gun entirely, but that's not the case unfortunately. He also pointed out that I've still got the Winchester that I can hunt with and the Ruger 10/22 that we both used much more frequently to keep.

Currently I'm seeing if I can swap it out with a used Sig P226R if I pay to ship my gun. I'm emailing for specifics on what needs to get done. I think it's a pretty decent trade. Now to find a range to really zero in the rifles again.
