Coyotes - .410 or .22LR?

Well, if all I had was a Ruger 10/22 I would go and kill some coyotes. Buy a few boxes of 22 shells and practice up, first. I have killed several coyotes with a Ruger .22, they were close range though.

I shot three at one time, once, running together, and I got all three. The farthest one was probably only 30 yards and I did have a 4 power Redfield on it. Try to make a good first shot, headshot if you can, then pump 2 or three into the lungs, if you can. A scope would be good, but you can do it with iron sights.

Forget the 410 for reasons already stated. Better yet would be to borrow, one of your uncle's guns, even a .22mag would be an improvement. But if not, go for it. You might lose one, but the result will be the same, one less coyote. But if you might lose some sleep over a wounded coyote, don't do it, because there is definately a risk of having one run off, but then there always is, no matter what you are shooting if you mess up.

GET CLOSER, you can do it, that will put the odds in your favor, for the .22

Get there before the coyotes do, and set up an ambush.

IMHO -Robert Ruark said it best - "Use Enough Gun". I am still convinced that, if we consider ourselves true sportsmen and we shoot wild animals, we owe them as quick a death as we are able and, ideally, a one shot death. This requires using enough gun in addition to being able to hit what we aim at.

I think this opinion is shared by those hunters I associate with.

Is the Tamer drilled and tapped to accept a scope? A 3" .410 slug should easily put down a yote at under 50 yards, BUT you need to shoot & practice with the gun to make sure you can hit a vital area. If the H&R isn't capable of decent groups with a slug, you will need to get something else.

In my neck of the woods a used single bbl 12ga can be found for +/-$75. Check gun shops, pawn shops, etc . . . in your area and you might even check: craigslist.org under the sporting good section.
