Coyote hunting

Not sure, I hopped over to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and looked up the hunting regulations. Couldn't find anything about ammuniton type/size. But did read that on Sundays you may not hunt or possess a firearm that is in a case that completely covers it or in at least 2 pieces rendering it unable to fire. Goes on to say that a clip, magazine, or cylinder are not counted as part of the firearm. So basicly you have to disassemble your firearm if you have it with you even if you're on the way to the range.

Thought it rather odd. But then I'm sure some of the laws here are strange to others.

i called one in to 15 feet and took him with a dble lung pass through with my bow......that was fun, took one at 180 yards last weekend with my .270, sly little bastard wouldnt come in any closer than that....

Hey, I'm a noob! I've actually used a Mini-14 on coyotes and jackrabbits! Whee! Oh: How do you stay a noob for some twenty years? :D

First shot from a cold barrel, a Mini will do as good as most any rifle you'll ever own. It'll hit the same place today as it did last week. And that's all any hunter needs a rifle to do...

Come to think of it, I've never shot a five-shot group at a coyote. :)

My AR-15 is meant for the woods.

Saying an AR-15 or Mini 14 isn't meant for the woods is the exact same thing as saying a Over and Under shotgun isn't meant for bird hunting. Even though some people don't use them to hunt or they are of the opinion that a specific firearm should only be used for specific purposes is a tad narrow minded.

We are all gun owners, be it hunting, trap, skeet, professionals, or hobbyist. We shouldn't single out any type of firearm simply because it's different or portrayed as evil by someone. Alienating one group simply because they prefer to use a specific firearm be it pistol, rifle, or shotgun will basically be saying " Hey we recognize this gun is different, thats why should only used for such and such tasks" If we, gun owners, start separating our firearms then it will be just as easy for those who have not so nice intentions toward us to do it as well. You might say it's a military rifle. So was the muzzle-loader, bolt action, several shotguns that were used by the military through out the years. Times change and so do the firearms. We need to stick together on this one to help keep our rights intact.

maine only allows four rounds in a gun so no ruger for hunting

The following was taken from page 28 of the 2007-2008 Maine Hunting and Trapping Laws and Rules PDF which can be found at the link below.

4. Auto-loading fi rearm (a fi rearm which
reloads itself after each shot and requires
a separate trigger pull for each shot). It
is unlawful to hunt with or possess for
hunting any auto-loading fi rearm which
has a magazine capacity of more than 5
cartridges*, unless the magazine has been
permanently altered to contain not more
than 5 cartridges. (Note: This provision
does not apply to .22 caliber rimfi re guns or
to auto-loading pistols with barrel lengths of
less than 8 inches). *Plus 1 in the chamber
for a total of 6.

a .223 may down a cyote but then deer, on the other hand, it may not, especially with the four round limit, and i dont want to look paramilitary when hunting

One question though. Why no hunting on Sunday in Maine?

I suppose that this reg began as a blue law, but since then it's been used to placate non-hunters. And to be honest it's fine with me. I kind of appreciate a day in the fall when I don't have to wear blaze orange while I'm raking leaves or taking down brush.

Spfb, I hate to disagree with a fellow Mainer, but plenty of people hunt with Rugers and AR's. Don't forget our good friends at Bushmaster, they make fine hunting rifles.

i may buy a bushmaster, someday, maybe even at the end of this year (im looking at election results) how much does a .223 ar cost? my first hunting guns are going to be prbably an 870, and a 30-30

elmousmc new thread?

cant we start a new thread with coyote calling as a title? i went jackal calling since your post about toys? been caling them, with the toys, they answer but they dont come closer. i think the pitch is to high. i saw a bat eared fox. killing range but we dont shoot them. there is a cattle calf bleeding for some reason not 25m from where i called. i will return tonight to see if the devils dont go for the calf. how often do you call on the same farm/place, we beleive that you must give 30 days before you call again on the same farm. research has shown that they can travel 22km a night. the jacals/coyote are a pest over here. the farm i am hunting on lost a stud bull of about a ton to jacal due to the fact that he was sick and layed down. i will take any sugestions as advice and will give feedback. thankyou sir.

The AR in the picture is a Remington R-15 w/ 22" barrel made by Bushmaster. I gave a bit over $1000 for it to find out later I could have built the thing for less :o Though it was $300 less than the same rifle with the Bushmaster name on it.

The 870 and .30-30 are both great firearms. And as many have said both should be in every hunter/shooter/collectors safe. Both are very versatile.
