Could use some advice on selecting a 22 lr handgun

I've zero experience with 22 lr, and could use some advice/suggestions on which to consider in my purchase.

Used is fine with me - I have no problem going to a pawn shop/gun show or whatever to find a used one.

I've seen a few threads about the 22, but not really interested in a conversion or 1911 style.

The criteria is kinda odd as the purpose of the purchase is primarily to enter a contest - I'm far from being a pro obviously - it's a local shooting contest and has to be with a 22lr.

I'd like to get one with a relatively small grip so the wife could use it also - I think her grip is probably more important than mine - I just don't want to buy his and her guns if possible.

Another criteria is I don't want to break the bank.

I need one very inexpensive since I'm also in the market for a new Springfield 1911 A1, Peacemaker replica in .45 colt (x2) as well as a .45 colt lever action.

Thanks as always in advance

The Ruger 22/45 or Mark III will out run any other .22LR semi. I used to shoot the Steel Challenge in rimfire, and once went more than 40,000 rounds without cleaning the 22/45, other than spraying the bolt with WD40, it ran flawlessly.

Either the Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark. I have a Ruger Mark 1 and it's a really nice shooting and functioning gun.

The Beretta Neos, much ridiculed because of its looks, has a very narrow grip that people with small hands really like, and is very reasonably priced. I have one that has been extremely reliable, and pretty darn good in the accuracy department.

The Ruger Mark series are more conventional in appearance, and are very well thought of in terms of accuracy and reliability, as are Buckmarks. I don't own either, but have shot them, and they are really nice. I'm completely satisfied with my Neos, though, and considering your comments regarding your wife might make it my top recommendation if you can get over the looks.

From what I have seen you post...an interest in sass/cas.....shooting....seems a Ruger Single Six would be the 22 of choice..

A little more details would be helpful
What is your definition of "very inexpensive"?
What type of "contest"?
By your reference to a 1911 style, or conversion do you mean you are not interested in any full slide, service style 22 rimfire?

A few candidates, depending on your definition of "very inexpensive".
Browning Buckmark Camper
Ruger MKIII
S&W Victory
All can be found in the $325-$400 price range.
Beretta Neos $250-$275
You might want to consider used guns to lower the cash outlay also.
Depending on your "contest",and your level of seriousness about competing, you might be able to get along OK with one of the really low priced 22 rimfire pistols like ghe Phoenix Arms HP22 that sells for considerably less than $200.

Browning Buckmark ...if you want a semi-auto. The grip angle on the Buckmark is very similar to the 1911...so that'll be an advantage to you.

Buckmark does not seem as fussy about ammo ..as most other .22's ...

A S&W revolver..( model 17 or 18 if you're buying used../ or a 617 new or used...).... they're all very good guns.

You should have your wife go to gunstore with you ...see how the grips fit her on a number of guns.

Of the five most common target pistols,,,

Of the five most common target pistols,,,
  • Ruger Mk-III
  • Ruger 22/45
  • Browning Buckmark
  • Beretta U22 Neos
  • S&W 22A (or the new Victory)

The NEOS has the most slender grip.

I own all five pistols,,,
The NEOS and the 22/45 are my favorites,,,
Notice that I say "favorites" rather than label them "best".

I honestly think it boils down to which one fits your hand best,,,
I can't tell one whit difference in their accuracy potential.

My advice is to get to a store and handle the guns,,,
You'll know in ten seconds whether it fits your hand or not.

Have fun shopping. :D

Thx all - yah some really good suggestions - much appreciated.

Went to the LGS and looked at a few - both of us liked the Rock Island 1911 XT-22 (349.99), Browning Buck Mark (419.99), and the Ruger Mk II (549.99)

Rock island is closer to our budget however - at least now I have an idea for the gun show this weekend.

Is the Ruger Single Six in 22 allowed in SASS? Didn't think you could use one that small caliber?

I bought a Ruger 22/45 Mark III and have been very pleased with it. I paid $299.99 at my Lgs NOT ON SALE. I went to look at the Neos at $279.99 but the Neos looked and felt like a toy when compared to the Mark III. It is very accurate and I have been pleased with it.

The purchase cost me another $500 a few months later. It made me want a 1911. I bought a RIA 1911 Tac. in 9mm that shoots, aims and shoots exactly like my 22/45.

My first 22 semi-auto was a cheap little Phoenix HP-22A. It is accurate and dependable.

Nope, all adult shooters must use a centerfire cartridge.

It's been a while but I think they allow .22's for kids,,,
If memory serves it was called the Buckaroo category.

Sass in general requires:
Two revolvers
One shotgun
One rifle

"Is the Ruger Single Six in 22 allowed in SASS? Didn't think you could use one that small caliber?"

As Aarond pointed out..the Ruger Single Six is not allowed by adults in SASS/CAS.....However....since single actions are used....The Single Six gives you a small 22....that lets you .."Practice"..single action shooting....where as all the others mentioned....as automatics...really do not.

Unless you are decided on a semi-auto, and depending on the rules of the contest, you might want to see if you can find a used S&W K-22 (Model 17) or Kit Gun (Model 34/35).

Since you require a small grip I would go with a ruger mark 1/2/3. They are extremely reliable, extremely accurate (especially with bull barrel), and generally great .22 automatic pistols. Lately I have seen them used for $350 which is stupid because I'm pretty sure a brand new one costs about $350

What pistols are allowed in the contest?
====================
If Browning Buckmark or Ruger MKxxx fits the hand, then these are .22 to look at. I think the browning URX has a smaller grip than the old frame browning.
====================
I also have a Ruger SR22. It is good size for small hands - trigger break, accuracy --- so,so.
I have not tried the S&W M&P compact .22lr --- it looks good.

My Ruger Mk II 5.5" bull barrel is extremely accurate and not too finicky about ammo. A used one in good condition should be reasonably priced.
