Could have gone real bad

I think all these guys suggesting you carry illegally to work are being irresponsible. In my neck of the woods, they come down hard on CO (county and State) who break rules such as those, and the powers that be would be totally within their rights to cut you loose if you carried a firearm into an area designated for "no weapons". I'm surprised you can't bring a handgun onto your facility grounds. Are you guys allowed to carry on your badge? For the most part, in New York Correction Officers are all Peace Officers, authorized by law to own and carry personal firearms (and make arrests). However, a lot of sheriffs don't allow their county COs to carry (and the law only allows them to carry with their sherrifs permission), and make them get licenses like everyone else, however, even in these cases, there are lockers at the prisons or jails specifically for COs coming on duty to secure their person handguns while working.

You must have some firearms on site, your transport teams are armed, right? How about guys dropping off and picking up?
Is it strictly illegal to carry a firearm on to the grounds of the facility, or only to do so without the warden's OK. If it's the latter, you may want to talk to your union rep., and see if they can get all your wardens, or your super. to authorize you guys to carry personal handgun into work and lock them up there.

I'm glad you came out O.K. but I have to agree with other posters. Don't stop to shop in uniform without a weapon. I've worked with some officers who take off their duty belt for the drive home yet stop in stores in uniform, unarmed. It's not just the thugs with a gripe that you should be concerned about. How about a robbery in progress? A man (or woman) in a police style uniform walking into that situation has a high risk of being shot pre-emptively by the robber(s).

The state patrol investigator keeps his weapon locked in his car, as do several officers who are LEO's part time for local departments. Yet no one else is allowed. We have occasional random searches of cars. Some time ago they found a single 22rf bullet in a car. I was a steward at the time. They made all kinds of noise about that and charged the officer. I immediately applied the Garrity Act which took it out of the state patrols hands. Then they tried to say he violated state law and would be charged administratively. I won the case by simply reading the law, Which says KNOWINGLY. No way he knew it was under his seat.
Getting permission from the warden is impossible. My department is run by a bunch of liberal social worker types. We even have this "Kinder Gentler Corrections" thing going on. I remember years ago, one high official wanted to completely disarm the department.

Than I guess the advice of not stopping anywhere in uniform makes the most sense. It's a shame, but that should cut down on your risk of being ID'd by an old guest.

1. document these events carefully and provide paperwork to your supervisors, law enforcement, as well as your local elected officials and carbon copy your mayor and governor.
2. quit smoking.

:( Disarming the American public is a pervasive modern trend, fostered and frequently promulgated by, both, big government and all of the large international corporations. In one sentence: ‘Self-defense is bad; and, moral degeneracy is good.’ You can see this anywhere you look throughout all of contemporary western civilization.

(Shades of George Orwell, right! Which, of course, means that carried to its logical conclusion, someday, all American police officers are going to be disarmed - Just as Aldous Huxley, Orwell’s contemporary and literary soul mate, has predicted.)

I don't go to convenience marts anymore, regardless of the time of day. I stock up on sodas, snacks, etc. at the supermarket. Same with ATM's. If I need cash I get cash back at the Grocery store.
Why would you EVER let fear controll you? There has to be another way around this than avoiding wawas for example!!! I love those milkshakes!:D
