I'm NYC born and raised, and(thankfully)moved to FL.
Now and then, I check the local news and came upon this.

Three Men Charged With Possession Of "Cop Killer" Handgun
July 21, 2006

Three men in Queens have been charged with the illegal possession of a so-called "cop killer" handgun.

The weapon is said to be capable of easily penetrating most bulletproof police vests and plates. The three men facing charges are from the Hammel Houses in Far Rockaway.

Senator Chuck Schumer is among those pushing to have the gun, called the Fabrique Nationale 5.7 outlawed.

It’s the first time that this particular gun has been recovered in New York.

Between 1994 and 2003, 425 police officers were killed nationwide with a "cop killer" gun.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, other firearms/calibers aside, I thought the civillian version of the 5.7 loading was "softened" for the market. Am I mistaken?

And to no great surprise... 'ol Chuck Schumer is involved.

Amazing circular logic. If in the last decade 425 officers were killed with any kind of gun, it was then, de facto, a "cop killer" gun. I somehow doubt that many, if any, officers have been killed with the FN 5.7.

Chuckie boy would outlaw paintball guns if given the chance. What is wrong with New York? Why do they elect such losers as him and Hillary to represent them?

Schumer ? That's the one who in describing the Black Talon bullets said they " hook into the flesh " The media and politicians are too dumb to understand that there are two types of bullets for the 5.7 ,only one is 'armor piercing' .

Oh, you mean just like any rifle?

Three men in Queens have been charged with the illegal possession of a so-called "cop killer" handgun.
I'm slightly confused on this point. Is the FN 5.7 illegal to own in NY?

According to the Jan '06 SWAT magazine, there are 5 different loads for the 5.7. The SS190 AP, L191 tracer, SS195 lead-free bullets are LE-only, and the "sporting" non-AP load is the SS196R.

chuckie would outlaw any gun for that matter.isnt it ironic that one of the most difficult places in the US to legally own a handgun, also has places that has the highest crime rate?

yeah..that experiment musta worked:rolleyes:

NY has its own "assault weapon" ban which includes a ban on >10 round magazines.

Handguns have to be registered in NY, and NYC has its own handgun permits that are harder to get.

They were probably violating the "high-cap" mag ban, and they probably didn't have a license for the gun at all, since its magazine was illegal.

It's a bit odd that three people were charged with possession of what sounds like a single gun.

I thought any rifle round will basically punch through kevlar, except for the kevlar vest with RIFLE PLATES! And even then, it doesn't make an officer invincible. What the hell isn't a cop killer? Any gun can kill a cop, they're human like everyone else. I'm sure more cops are killed by people wielding handguns than rifles. It's kind of hard to get a rifle past an officer unless you are sniping/ambushing.

Yeah, NY experiment really works! let's ban all guns!!! I mean it also worked for D.C.!

Hey tyme, remember that movie "Three men and a Baby"? They applied the title to those guys apparently.

Every time a cop is killed with his own gun, we ought to rush out and demand a ban on the kind of gun the cop was carrying: it is, after all, a "cop-killer" then.

I'm confident that if someone asked schumer about the british efforts to ban TOY guns, he would say he sees nothing wrong with trying that, too.

Schumer exists because a powerful, well-funded, group of people support him. Most of the "cosmopolitan" citizens of NYC are actually more parochial than cosmopolitan. There are entire neighborhoods full of people who's entire life has been in NYC. Their idea of a "vacation trip" is to visit another Borough. Into this we inject a kind of perverted pride about being a citizen of NYC. With that type of character, the Shumers of the world resonate well. Sort of like dumb and dumber.

Interesting point there: There was a study(or it is ongoing) I read about a couple years ago looking in to genetics and inbreeding in the Burroughs. While the jokes always settle on rural people who "don't get out much" it appears if you want some real "hillbilly inbreeding" try the "cosmopolitan" NYC on for size instead. To me that would explain a LOT!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled episode of Laughing at Chuckle Head.

HAW!! HAW!! HAW!!! Black talons hook on flesh!!! HAW!! HAWW!!!
I wonder what scientific dream Chucky got that out of??
I guess that means our jacketed hollow points don't.
Why is it that it seems the criteria to become a member of government is you have to be unknowing and senseless??
No wonder our country is going to hell as it "progresses".

You're confused because the author is trying to confuse you. No, they're not illegal, of course. But the story implies that, by using the phrase "illegal [..] gun", meaning that possession of any gun by this person under the time, place, & circumstances would be illegal. So much the better that it's a politically incorrect gun, so they can jump on their chance to demonize it via intentionally confusing their readers.

Guy on another forum wrote a letter to the DA.

22nd of July, 2006

D.A. Richard A. Brown
District Attorney
Queens County
125-01 Queens Boulevard
Kew Gardens, New York 11415-1568

In response to your press release of Thursday 20th of July 2006: “D.A. Brown: Two Far Rockway Brothers and Friend Charged with Illegal Possession of ‘Cop Killer’ Gun and Cocaine”(1)

The press release states:

The District Attorney said that the Fabrique Nationale (FN) 5.7 handgun is often referred to as a “cop killer” because it has a high-capacity 20-round magazine, the ability to shoot 50 to 100 yards with great accuracy and its 5.7 x 28 bullet can perforate 48 layers of Kevlar. Of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty nationwide between 1994 and 2003, 425 were killed with this handgun.

Without debating the questionable terminology and tone of the quoted material; the simple technical statement that the 5.7x28mm cartridge ‘can’ perforate 48 layers of Kevlar, while true, is very misleading. Only one(2) type of this ammunition ‘can’ penetrate to that degree, the SS190 cartridge. SS190 is classified by the BATFE as ‘armor piercing’(3). Consequently it can only be sold to law enforcement and military agencies(4). The ammunition is only released and shipped from U.S. Customs controlled bonded warehouses upon BATFE and U.S. Customs approval.

The more widely available types of 5.7x28mm (SS195LF, SS916, SS197) fare only as well as normal sporting ammunition against body armor(5).

The last sentence quoted cannot be as easily overlooked as a technical oversight though.

Of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty nationwide between 1994 and 2003, 425 were killed with this handgun.

According to the FBI while 616 officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty between 1994 and 2003, 425 of them were killed with a handgun of any type(6). Your statement that 425 have been killed by the Five-seveN model handgun(7) in that time period not only improbable but contradictory to published evidence that 129(8) of those 425 officers were killed by 9mm handguns. Aside from the statistics the Five-seveN did not even exist until 1998, and was not available widely in the U.S. until 2001, which makes the claims in the press release even less credible.

While we fully support the efforts of the D.A. to prosecute criminals, spreading this or any type of misinformation through human error or design is contrary to the established principles of that office. It appears ignorant to people familiar with these facts and spreads false rumor and half truths to those not.

Sincerely,
A New Yorker

2 Two other rounds are classified as armor piercing but while being even more rare are specialty. The SS191 tracer and SS193 subsonic cartridges. See http://www.fnhusa.com/contents/tw_57x28mm.htm

Nice one.
I hope it doesn't fall on deaf ears, or blind eyes in this case.
No matter what, I'm happy to see that someone took the time to write that letter.
Heh, the name and address at the top brought back some memories. I used to pass by that office every day on the way to work. When I used to live in Queens that is...

JR47 said, "Most of the 'cosmopolitan' citizens of NYC are actually more parochial than cosmopolitan."

One anecdote in support--A very nice, intelligent young lady from NYC who married one of our battalion's officers at Fort Hood, Texas, in the early eighties had to be told what a cow was upon seeing it on the trip from New York to Texas. She had never seen one before.

Oh Allah, that is great. She didn't have tv? I don't know if I can honestly believe that story, not calling you a liar but it's a little too out there. Then again, we have people like Janet Reno, so what can we say?

I understand your skepticism, Big Mac. :) The incident was reported to me and several other FSOs/FIST Chiefs in the S3 shop, however, by her new husband.
