I would go with the standard rifle with the good fixed sights and leave it at that. With five or ten round mags, the weapon is long and slim and easier to conceal under a long coat or rolled up in something (we're talking SHTF, of course). I would keep it loaded with .223 soft or hollow points-a friendlier choice in a populated area. These are not tack driving rifles, their role is more like an M1 Carbine, a light rifle that's there when you need it.

Hey Speed why not go with a Marlin 1894 or Guide Gun chambered in .357Magnum? You will be able to have a rifle that uses the same cartridge as a revolver. It will shoot .357 and .38 special rounds and it is compact.

Speed,

I've owned several Mini 14s, and all were very reliable (if less than tackdrivers). I think you would be well served with one, should you ever need it.

Still, when considering all your circumstances, I second the recommendations of Will Beararms and grimel.

A lever action in .357 Magnum would certainly be adequate for defending your family during a violent confrontation. It would probably serve you even better in the legal confrontation almost certain to follow.

A lever action would probably appear much more benign to prosecutors and jurors than even the relatively sanitary Mini.

Just a thought...

I am proud to be a New Yorker...........

Where I live (the Hudson Valley) is one of the most beautiful places in America IMHO.

Jeez, you would think peoples perception of us would have changed after Sept. 11! The world got to see first hand how good "New Yorkers" really are.

BTW,

I have owned a Mini-14 since 1984, and have never had a single problem with it. Unfortunately it has been collecting dust since I bought my AK.

I own an AR-15, AK-47 and a Mini14. There is nothing wrong with a Mini- 14. You have made an excellent choice.
BTW, I am an American who was born and spent my entire life in Texas. I am proud of my American brothers and sisters who happen to live in New York. There are good and bad people everywhere.
Hold your head high New York, for you are representing the rest of us well.
God Bless America!

aerod1,

Thank you!

I have always been a fan of the Great state of Texas also.
