After doing some research and posting some questions I have decided to purchase a mini 14 for my primary rifle.
Given the fact that I live in nyc it seems that it is my best option for a shtf RIFLE.
I am sure their are some that agree and some that disagree, the purpose of this post is to get the final opinions of fellow forumites before I make purchase

Please understand that this is my main source of firearms wisdom and your opinions are very valuable to me.

Please don't suggest I move to another state "this is my home for better or for worse" And please do not recomend a shotgun, that base has been covered.

Please understand I am quite serious given the current situation we are all in and I need serious reply's as to whether you all think this is a good choice,If not, realize I don't have many options given where I live so if you have any other ideas please consider my location.

So convince me to buy or not to buy that is the question.

god bless america

p.s. 223 or 30

Sounds like you already made up your mind. Now quit dragging your feet and go buy your new rifle.
Many law enforcement agencies used to and still do carry the mini-14. It sounds like your #1 choice.
Don't forget to buy ammo.

I didn't know one could own such in the big crapple. Hurry and get it before they change the law. Happy shooting.

Get that thing tomorrow.

Be sure to function check it with ammo & especially any mags you use. You do want it to go bang. Sight it in dead on at 100 yards & you should be all set - for a NY minute. ;)

You have a quorum and consensus, I believe.

'Twouldn't be my first choice, but I don't have to deal with New York's laws. If that's what you can get, get gettin'!

I'll second the motion to watch what mags you purchase. Make sure they're from a reputable source where you can give them back if necessary.

Sounds like your mind is made up on a mini 14, a good rifle for your intended use. Now you have to decide which one, ranch or standard. Ranch rifle comes with ruger's scope rings and a flimsy folding rear sight, standard model has a very durable peep sight but is more difficult to scope.

Given the accuracy potential of the rifle, I recommend the standard model. Putting a scope on a 3 moa or so rifle doesn't improve precision much over peep sights and adds weight and bulk to a light, compact package. If you do opt for the ranch, you can put a williams peep sight on it, it is much more durable than the factory folder.

My AR (bushmaster) is more accurate, but the mini is lighter, has acceptable accuracy for 2 legged varmits (short range) and ALWAYS goes bang with good mags.

As far as caliber, I prefer .223 to 7.62x39. 223 is a lighter and smaller cartridge, and mags should be easier to find too.

Big Crapple Navy Joe? With the utmost in do repsect, if that's the best you can do why not forgoe posting? Those folks are hurting and I will not let this post go by without my two cents worth and I am a Southerner and descendant of Confederate soldiers on both sides of my family for what it's worth.

Now as to the Ruger. For your purposes, it will work great. Rugers are tough and durable and mags can still be had at gun shows in the high cap variety. In your environment, I would skip a scope and mabye consider a red dot or the normal iron sights. Definitely go with the .223. It is in abundance and inexpensive.

Keep it oiled and learn how to use it effectively and assertively. Lean how to field strip it blind folded and clean it after every range trip. Above all, make sure you comply with the law until we can change it.

I don't see the necessity for a stainless steel version as opposed to the blued version. In either case, you still must oil the weapon on a regular basis. I prefer the blued version but that's just me.

For the record, are New Yorkers changing their feeling about guns since this latest tragedy?

Please convince me!

(With apologies to Englebert Humperdink)

Please convince me! Make me buy!
For I'm not sure I want that gun!
With all these laws, it's hard to choose!
Convince me, and make me buy that gun!

Please convince me! Make me buy!
I'd be a fool to be unarmed!
The AR's nice, but banned in NYC.
Convince me, and make me buy that gun!

Pleeeeease convince me! Make me buy!
Assault weapons not welcome here!
Those lousy libs have messed things up!
Convince me, and make me buy that gun!

Thag yew vera much.

Sanity check? Negative, Captain!

:D

(Will, don't sweat the 'big crapple' remark. It's all in good fun.)

I'm outta here!

Mini 14? Good rifle, reliable... Get it, get it, get it!

With this many positive urgings, have you got it locked in your safe yet? :)

Thanks for all the reply's,
There has been a huge increase in applications for firearms in nyc since the attack as well as nationwide.
There seems to be alot of ballbusting on this forum about "liberal new yorkers"
Yeah, there are alot of whining, sniveling bleeding hearts here and I am not one of them, neither are any of my friends or family

I found this forum while surfing the net and thought it would be a great place to learn more about firearms and it has been but it seems to me that some forumites spend alot of energy acting as if they individually fought for thier 2nd ammendment rights rather than simply being born in a state that has always respected those rights.

As far as I am concerned my local laws are a crime but you all must understand that it takes alot of time and money to change what is done.
I for one can sleep at night knowing that I have done my best to bring to light the seriousnes of an individuals right to bear arms

Any way, thank you all for giving a novice your advice on the mini14, it has been helpful. And I will get it as soon as I can

god bless america

Maybe the rest of us should move to New York. Chande their demographs enough to run off schumer and clinton. Change their laws, perforate a few criminal types to show the locals how things should work and then move back home before they muck up our states laws.

You wanted me to convince you and you have convinced me. If we can convince 6 million gunowners to move you can buy that AR you want.

well said , friend. I too get tired of folks bashing us new yorkers and our state. laws here are not as bad as most folks think. I live upstate and have more firearms than a good lot of the people that bash us will ever own , and they are all legal. and furthermore I love NYC, I was an army recruiter in the late 70's there and fell in love with the city. We visit 1-3 times each year to see a show or just to see the lady liberty in all her splendor.
And I must remind our fellow New Yorkers that if the laws are not what you think they should be then get out and vote and lobby and in plain english get involved!!!!!
NOW let me get down off this darn soapbox!
good day!

jake, thanks we could use all the help we could get!
animal, how far upstate are you?any good gun shops or ranges?

Allow me to differ...

Speed, the Mini is a pretty reliable rifle.

I would opt for the 30 Russian caliber. It just has more horsepower. In the Mini, it should be reasonably accurate.
Surplus ammo is cheap (at least for now, and probably as long as .223 is cheap) and reloadable brass is not that hard to find.

I like horsepower over firepower. Just an alternate view.

archie can you be more specific?
maybe some balistic or practical info?
horsepower over firepower?

thanks

Just another point of view. Seeing that you live in NYC and face the possibility of having even more asinine laws enacted. Do you want to risk owing a future ban item? There is another choice. Not better, just differant.

My house gun (and I could legally own any firearm I can afford) is a lever action rifle. A cheap Rossi M92 in 44mag. It's accurate with it's cheap open sights beyond any reasonable expectations (offhand soda cans at 50yds). Light weight and handy. Just slightly less handy and portable than a handgun. They can be had from Marlin, Winchester, and Rossi in 30-30, 44mag, 45 colt, and 357mag. All qualify as "deer" rifles with the handgun round in the compact trapper rifles being cowboy guns. A 125 (or 140gr) 357mag would be a pretty good SHTF gun. I just prefer 44mags and 180gr Cor-bons are effective. Penetrate more than a 223 and less than a 7.62x39.

My $0.02

Get the Mini-14 and buy some good magazines or it will choke up and jam. The gun is reliable as a brick paper weight with good mags. I have a stainless scoped Mini-14 Ranch Rifle in the trunk of my Crown Vic patrol car and I own 3 preban AR's the Mini-14 is more reliable and above all my rifle must be reliable.

I agree, here is another Rebel who says that everybody needs to cut NYC some slack, they are hurting and they are Americans just like the rest of us. NYC we in Dixie, are behind you guys.

Not for nothing, but I have spent alot of time down south and this city boy always got along just fine with the good ol boy's

Once in a while some of the small town cops would mess with me but I never took it too personally after all I was a stranger.

My father and grand father both had lots of southerner friends that they met in the airborne "101st"and kept in touch with them for many years after their service.I think wars in the past brought this nation together and I think the same thing is happening again

god bless america
