I prefer the Contender
for one reason, I like shooting pistol rounds out of a handgun, and pistol caliber barrels for the Encore are hard to find. Tons of rifle caliber barrels (even in handgun length), but finding actual pistol calibers is tougher.
In rifle configuration, the Encore shines, but for handguns, I think it is too much. Heavier than needed, and shooting waay too big rounds. Of course, thats just my opinion. If I want/need a .308, I won't stop at a 14" barrel single shot, I'll add another 4.5" and a couple pounds and use a magazine fed carbine over the handgun. Or a sngle shot rifle in a suitable caliber.
I like big pistol rounds, and have a few, but out of a handgun, even with barrels up to 14", .30-30 and .45-70 are where I draw the line.
I have a couple of old Contender frames, and barrels in;
.45-70 (14") .30-30 (14"), .22LR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .357mag, .44mag. .45 Colt, and .45Colt/.410, all 10". And I have a really fun one, a 6" barrel in 9mm Luger! It will shoot rings around ever 9mm autopistol I have ever found.
Great for making fun bets, when somebody brags on how accurate their 9mm auto is, I just shoot a group half that size or considerably less, and do it with their ammo!
Anyway, if you want to shoot high intensity rifle rounds from a handgun the Encore is the way to go. Otherwise, the Contender is much more versatile and a better value. The new G2 Contenders take all old Contender barrels, and fix the few gripes some people had about the older design, which were really minor things to me. I hear the triggers on the new G2s aren't as good though.
