Considering moving to NJ...

As a capitive.... er resident of NJ lets clear a few things up.

AR-15's aren't illegal, but they have to meet certain requirements like a non-telescoping stock, no flash suppressor or bayonet lug. All magazines are 15 rounds or less. (for any gun)

There are some nice areas to live in nj. It only smells up north around Newark, or some of the marsh area (stagnant water, natural, just the way it is).

There is NO EXIT TAX. Not sure why people keep saying there is. What they will do is hold a portion of your home sale to make sure you paid your income tax for the time you lived here, sales tax, and property taxes. If all those are good they'll give you the money back, if they aren't they'll use that money to get you squared away.

Income tax in nj is 3% under 70k and 6% up to 500k. Then it's like 9%.

Property taxes are just nuts. Rent is expensive.

Like most places there are bad crime areas, and areas with low crime. Camden is bad, Newark is bad, you really don't want to leave the casino areas of Atlantic City etc. Just have to know the area, like anywhere else in the world.

Isn't NJ the state you can't pump your own gas.. rofl pretty much sets the tone doesn't it?

I know Hollowpoints are or use to be a big no no.
I think you're only allowed transport between range/home... Don't quote me on that.

I'd check google for NJ gun owner / 2a groups, Im sure theres one even there.

One thing that struck me is you need a permit to carry to possess a handgun, Im not sure if they meant possess as in outside the home or to actually buy.
You apparently need a permit to buy in order to own a longgun.

Not sure how that works since you already own them, I guess you'd have to apply for a permit before you move?

Must be a hell of a job to even consider NJ.

We don't pump our gas, but our prices are usually cheaper than other states so I can live with that.

Hollow points are only a problem if you have them on you and commit a crime. You can own them, you can take them to the range, keep them at home etc. You won't be allowed to carry in this state so the only place you need them is at home anyway.

Umm, if they told you that you weren't allowed to speak in public but they gave you all the free steak and beer that you ever wanted... would you be "all cool" with not ever being permitted to speak?!

As an avid motorcyclist (retired) I have long known about the gas pumping rule. Let me just say that I am well aware that a whole ridiculous slew of Americans don't know much about New Jersey and yet we HATE IT ANYWAY and yeah, I don't lose sleep over that injustice, much like your freedom to pump gas apparently exists in only when you are out of state but you're cool with it since your gas prices are reasonable.

Sorry, but you got that wrong...

15 round capacity is for semi autos, whether rifle or pistol (shotgun is a little touchy, as over 5 with another feature can make an “assault weapon”; if it has no other feature, 15 rounds would be the maximum for a semi-auto shotgun).

If the magazine can be accepted by a semi-auto, then yes... 15 round limit (that pump Remington 5.56mm rifle which took AR magazines wouldn’t give you a green light for 30 rounders). But what about bolt action? Ever see the 20 round magazines for the Springfield 1903? That is NJ legal, since it isn’t for/can be used with a semi-auto firearm. But it is also why the Marlin Model 60 capacity was reduced... being a semi-auto rifle. If it was a bolt action (or lever action), an 18 round tube magazine would be fine in NJ.

Likewise, there isn’t any restrictions on the “assault weapon” features on pump shotguns or bolt action rifles. Collapsible stocks, flash hiders, pistols grips... all good if the gun isn’t semi-auto.

While I understand what was probably meant, saying “any gun” must be 15 rounds or less is far from accurate. Henry Arms is out of Bayonne, and produces the Golden Boy .22 rifle. Sold in NJ, as my father bought one for himself a few years back (which I had a custom receiver plate made for him). Clearly listed as 16 rounds of .22 LR on their website, and 21 rounds of Shorts.

It is a pistol purchase permit... not a carry permit. Pistols just have to go directly between specific places (house, range, dealer)... very specific transportation law. If you have a carry permit (rare), you are exempt of the transportation rules... but have other rules to follow (civilians, including retired L/E, cannot carry hollow-points).

You don’t need a FID to own a long gun, either. You need a FID to purchase one in/out of NJ, as a NJ resident (federal law requires pistols to be purchased in state of residence, but long guns just need to go through an FFL if out of state). If you don’t have a FID, transportation of long guns is similar to pistols... directly between specific places. With a FID, long guns can sit in your car if you want to grab something to eat after going to the range.
