Considering going "All Ruger"

I have just come to appreciate so much in Rugers lineup. No I don't like all the lawyer mumbo jumbo and additional safety indicators and such.

But I think they just have the best overall lineup of any brand.

10/22
mini 14/30
m77
not sure about their "scout" rifle but maybe

Mark II/III
P series 40/45
GP100
LCP
LC9
SR9
SR40
SR1911

Only thing they lack is a regular 870 style shotgun.

So, my question to the forum is, not to agree with me on Ruger, but what brand has a great lineup in your view?

Skip the 870, and go back to a real shotgun: Winchester Model 12 (or the poor man's shotgun: Win Mod 25). ...Or make due with a Ruger Red Label.

Other than that, I have a great deal of respect for Ruger's offerings, in general.

But, when you break it down, model by model... I'm not willing to buy 95% of their offerings. There's always something stupid and irritating; such as ugly sights, terrible grips, lack of barrel length choices, wrong caliber/cartridge, offered only in blued/stainless (whatever is the opposite of what I want), etc.

They have a decent range of models. ...but, within those models, you don't find much variety. :(

Winchester and Remington (including Marlin) don't even register on my radar.
Browning makes some fine equipment, but they don't offer a wide range of models (and the handgun line up is pretty limited).

I, in contrast, have decided to go with a "No Ruger" gun collection

...you beat me to it. :D

I have never had much luck with Ruger handguns, I've owned 6 different SA Rugers over 20 years and none of them have performed well for me. I've not even bothered with the DA Rugers for this matter. I have fired one of the Ruger semiautos, but was not thrilled with it, either.

I still have my old early '60's 10/22, it's a fine rifle but it doesn't really float my boat and will be going to my daughter as her Appleseed rifle. Part of my indifference is the goofy rotary mag.

I've not owned a Ruger centerfire rifle, I wouldn't discount the #1 or #3 rifles, but they are not high on the list, either.

I would probably give the Ruger 1911 a try, but I would be comparing it to about 4 other makes. The one I looked at seemed pretty well built, but so did all those SA Rugers I bought...

Ruger to me is kind of like Glock... not that they aren't fine firearms, just not fine with me. :D

That's a good point. They don't have dozens of variations on each model. Think that's why I like them. Basic and reliable.

Any examples of such a deep lineup with other makers? I do like some SW products as well.

No I don't like all the lawyer mumbo jumbo and additional safety indicators and such.

That's my main turnoff, that and aesthetics.

They don't have dozens of variations on each model

Agreed on this as well, not many options, however the sheer number of options on S&W offerings and a bajillion different model numbers just confuses the crap outta me:confused:

I guess you could say that I like basic but pretty

There is a way around all the lawyer mumbo jumbo, additional safety indicators, keyholes and related crap, regardless of the brand(s) you prefer. Buy older models of the guns you like. The damn things are all too expensive. Might as well have what you really want.

For the most part, I try not to get too hung up on brands, whether it be guns, cars, or can openers. With that said, If I were going to go with 1 brand of gun, Ruger would be high on my list of possible companies. As others have mentioned, though, they don't make a pump shotgun, and I consider a pump shotgun to be a necessity.

If I could only purchase Ruger firearms I wouldn't mind. But I do have one tiny little annoyance with Ruger.

They have no "custom shop" or rather the ability to order a rifle in a caliber that isn't part of their standard offering.

I had always just assumed they did until the day I called to ask them if they could build me a plain ol' standard Ruger Hawkeye rifle in 8mm Mauser. Their reply? A resounding "Nope." :(

Not a deal breaker though. I still love the Ruger guns I do have.

So, my question to the forum is, not to agree with me on Ruger, but what brand has a great lineup in your view?

Both Browning and Beretta can cover the gamut from handguns to shotguns to rifles very nicely

When it comes to centerfire rifles, I accidentally became 'mostly' Ruger. My 270 is a Sako, but I wanted a 220 Swift (by anybody) many years ago. I went to gun shows and found a well used Ruger 77V. I bought it. At a later date, a buddy had a gun he wanted to sell, and it turned out to be a Ruger 77 in 260. The price was terrific. I bought it. Just last year I went to some gun stores to buy a cheap 223 - probably a Handirifle like my Dad's. But...a Ruger Hawkeye was on sale, and really cheap. I bought it. And recently my Grandson got a gift rifle from his uncle on his Dad's side. A Ruger 77 in 308. I tend to it, sight it in, load for it, and it stays in my gun safe. There are plenty of other gun makes that I'd be happy with, but I'm kinda booked up on guns these days (Having more guns than I really need) and I'm very happy with the Rugers. They all shoot great and have great triggers (gunsmith tuned), though the Hawkeye in 223 could use a little trigger smoothing.

There isn't any brand for me I feel has a lineup that fills all my requirements. I like Ruger revolvers, Glock semi automatic mid frame/large frame guns, Ruger mouse guns, Savage bolt action rifles, Mossberg shotguns, S&W Semi automatic rifles.

there is such a disparity between a safari grade 77 or a top grade #1 and the typical ruger handgun with mill marks still on the barrel and cheap appearance.

The quality and utility is there. Have no doubt. In a lot of cases, the aesthetics are perfect, in others, it looks like tom cullen designed them.
