I just got a Ruger Redhawk which is a DA/SA revolver. Mine takes .45 Colt/.45 ACP (with Moon clips). I get to shoot up all of my saved .45 ACP ammo plus keep some pretty hot .45 Colt loads for any bears that wander around here. Not to mention some great Gold Dot JHP for personal protection.
I have loved SAA guns since I was a kid. I had the cowboy outfit and plastic guns that shot caps. Naturally I wanted to buy a real one when I could. I bought a Colt SSA and was in heaven. However, I found the trigger guard to be too small and did not like the plow handle grips so I sold it.
Then I went through a series of Ruger Blackhawks before switching to Super Redhawks and now my new Redhawk. The Blackhawks have the cowboy look but are more substantial and can handle heavier loads easily. Plus the sights are much better. I prefer the Redhawks because you can shoot them in single action yet have a DA trigger too.
I still love the look of a cowboy SSA so what I did was buy a pretty realistic prop gun, holster and a book about SAA guns to make small display in the corner of my man cave. I get to look at it for many hours and it even operates like the real thing but cost a lot less. Even today I was looking at the Vaqueros and trying to decide which to get. I go with the .45 Colt for the real cowboy experience. Then you know how they felt shooting it. Practice ammo is not that costly if you shop around and when you have to load each one into a chamber one by one, it takes a while to get through a box unlike my semi autos where I can fire off 50 shots in a few minutes.
No matter what, enjoy it. I have been shooting revolvers for over 40 years. If I was limited to one gun, it would be a revolver. No magazines or spending a lot of money to find the ammo that feeds the best, etc. . I just like the simplicity of them. I can put one in a drawer and 25 years later, I can still shoot it. Plus, learning to use a heavy trigger makes all other triggers feel like hair triggers. I find shooting revolvers as relaxing as fishing.
