Considering First Revolver (Ruger New Vaquero 45 ACP)

Oneloudvous - I think you're gonna love that flattop. How do you like the grips? They are terrific in my hands. Enjoy!

Yeah, I love the Flat Tops too.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

All of my Ruger .45's have needed their cylinders reamed.

If your barrel is .452 and your throats are as small as .449 nothing you shoot out of it is going to be accurate.

The Rugers are good guns but buying a reamer is mandatory.

I have 7 Ruger .45 cal SA's Blackhawks and Vaqueros (one New Vaquero), none have needed to be reamed.

Buying a reamer is hardly mandatory.

I have a bunch of 45 Colt Rugers. NONE of them needed the chamber throats reamed. Buying a reamer is hardly mandatory. Your mileage may vary.

I just got a Ruger Redhawk which is a DA/SA revolver. Mine takes .45 Colt/.45 ACP (with Moon clips). I get to shoot up all of my saved .45 ACP ammo plus keep some pretty hot .45 Colt loads for any bears that wander around here. Not to mention some great Gold Dot JHP for personal protection.

I have loved SAA guns since I was a kid. I had the cowboy outfit and plastic guns that shot caps. Naturally I wanted to buy a real one when I could. I bought a Colt SSA and was in heaven. However, I found the trigger guard to be too small and did not like the plow handle grips so I sold it.

Then I went through a series of Ruger Blackhawks before switching to Super Redhawks and now my new Redhawk. The Blackhawks have the cowboy look but are more substantial and can handle heavier loads easily. Plus the sights are much better. I prefer the Redhawks because you can shoot them in single action yet have a DA trigger too.

I still love the look of a cowboy SSA so what I did was buy a pretty realistic prop gun, holster and a book about SAA guns to make small display in the corner of my man cave. I get to look at it for many hours and it even operates like the real thing but cost a lot less. Even today I was looking at the Vaqueros and trying to decide which to get. I go with the .45 Colt for the real cowboy experience. Then you know how they felt shooting it. Practice ammo is not that costly if you shop around and when you have to load each one into a chamber one by one, it takes a while to get through a box unlike my semi autos where I can fire off 50 shots in a few minutes.

No matter what, enjoy it. I have been shooting revolvers for over 40 years. If I was limited to one gun, it would be a revolver. No magazines or spending a lot of money to find the ammo that feeds the best, etc. . I just like the simplicity of them. I can put one in a drawer and 25 years later, I can still shoot it. Plus, learning to use a heavy trigger makes all other triggers feel like hair triggers. I find shooting revolvers as relaxing as fishing.

Finally got to pick the gun up today, impressed with the quality. Might get to shoot it tomorrow after work.

all the ruger single actions are great. the single six 22lr/wmr is almost mandatory for any shooter, and the 357/38/9mm is about the same for a revolver enthusiast. the one ruger model that i cant quite get up to speed with is the 45acp vaquero, not the caliber which is great, but the birdshead grip. i like the piece enough to keep it but not enough yet to shoot more. any pointers would be most welcome.

I got to hit the range yesterday after work but they were closing early so I only had 45 minutes. I probably put 75 rounds or so through the Blackhawk. It's a pussycat with 9mm and 38 special, and I was impressed with the fireball from the 357. i really like the gun, but I may have to do something with the front sight. I'm used to night sights and the all black front sight doesn't do much for me.

I'm glad you had a good time. : ) I think you made a great choice for a first single action revolver. Like Tallball said, we'd like to see pictures if you will oblige.
