Considering ditching my .40 in favor of several 9MMs

I don't shoot 40 anymore, but that's not to say nobody should. I shoot 9 and 45 because the guns I want are chambered in those calibers.

Shoot what you want. I think that in an effort to "simplify" our lives, we often make things way too complicated.

.40 isn't going anywhere and it only averages about 2 cents more a round than 9mm. I can also tell you that the 5 major le departments that I work with are still buying .45acp and don't plan on changing anytime soon.

I only have one .40 and its a Glock 27. Like you I considered switching everything to 9mm and then we had one of those ugly episodes and you couldn't find .22, 9mm, 45 but there still plenty of .40 rounds available.

Hence, I kept the G27 and ordered a 9mm conversion barrel from Long Wolf and a couple of mags. Is good to have choices.

If I ever find a Medusa M-47 for the right price, I might buy it.

I share the ammo experience during the "panic"....Maybe the best reason to have a .40.

As far as "stockpiling" is concerned, I don't think it should be a major consideration with pistols. My minimum comfort level is 500 rounds, although the typical case quantity is a 1000 rounds. And I think a thousand rounds of 180 grain truncated cone is cheaper, and as effective, as the best of the exotic 9mm hollow points. And if that is not what you are talking about with respect to your 9mm.....Then this is an apples to oranges exercise.

Considering ditching my .40 in favor of several 9MMs...I've also been reading about the .40 diminishing in popularity with LEO in favor of 9MM.

Am I hearing that LEO's are dumping the .40 S&W?

Yep, .40 is going strong. Do to the 4006's being discontinued a while back (what a nice gun by the way) the Colorado State Patrol is now and has been carrying the M&P 40's

Dump the 40 S&W

All my handguns are 0.35-- caliber except for my 696, which is 44SPL
Anyone is under gunned when using a handgun solely. Well, maybe 454Casul but quick follow up shots are tough.

I didn't read the whole thread, but no matter how much you love the 9mm you need to keep at least one 40 just in case there's another crazy ammo panic.

I'm surprised to see that four states are still using the .45 GAP. I didn't know that was still a thing.

PA State Police have been using P227 Sigs in 45 ACP since 2014. Before that they had Glock 21s in 45 ACP. They did use Glock 37s in 45 GAP but that was quite some time ago and not for very long.

Cool thanks for the state breakdown on caliber. I did notice KY showing Glock34
and 40CAL. G34 is 9MM and G35 is the 40CAL I have em both and they are fine pistols! Not a Glock fanboy just call em the way I see them!

Kentucky State Police will be switching to 9mm. Glock 17 is what I heard.

Interesting! Did not know that thanks!. G17 is fine pistol but would rather carry G34 slightly bigger brother if I were 9MM KY LEO.

Nothing against 9 but I'm sticking to 40 and 45.

Or reload, like I have done. I rarely buy factory ammo
