Considering a Benelli Ultra Light

Oneounceload: I am fairly new to "nice" shotguns. :) My old favorite has been a Stevens single shot .12 that kicks like a mule, but I can shoot it. Just bought my wife a Benelli Montefelto that is super nice and makes my Stevens look pitiful. But I can hit better with the Stevens than with the Benelli. My Stevens cost me $75.00 20 years ago and the Benelli set me back just over 1K last month. I can tell you this, if I was going squirrel or rabbit hunting I would grab the Stevens.

This weekend my cousin and I shot some skeet and I took the old Stevens out just for sentimental value. :) Lo and behold I got a double with it! Purely luck as I hit both clays as they crossed. Sure love that old gun.

Nice guns still have to fit you properly to be successful.. Sounds like right now, your stock needs some adjustment. Don't the Benellis come with shims?

I once tried a friends K-80 Super Scroll - standing there with a $30K gun in my hand, I couldn't hit squat - wasn't the gun's fault, or even my own - the stock was custom made to fit the owner, not me - he's RH, I'm a LH, so the cast was completely wrong. Good example that $$$$$ doesn't mean squat if it doesn't fit you.

You might have some folks at your local club who can watch you shoot and offer some advice on which way to manipulate your stock for a better fit.

Good luck and don't give up on the Benelli just yet. Get the stock tweaked and, as a gun writer friend of mine says - "shoot it exclusively for a year". If after that time, it still isn't right, then it just wasn't meant to be - sell it and move on.

There are also after market stock adapters that will allow you to adjust the comb, cast, LOP, pitch, drop at heel and toe, etc.....

Well the Benelli is for my wife so I won't adjust the stock. It fits her perfectly and she will probably outshoot me soon enough. :) This is her first foray into shotguns, she has a couple of handguns and rifles but really likes quail hunting and skeet shooting.

I've been looking at a new semiauto or pump shotgun but definitley don't want to drop another 1k. :)

Thanks for your input.

Benellis are light, and without the gas system to bleed off some of the gas, recoil can be more than other types of guns, so fit is even more paramount for folks who may be new or small statured. Light target loads will kill any clay target and most small upland birds like dove and quail very nicely without thumping your shoulder
