Considering a 9mm

Xdm 5.25 -short trigger reach (where the trigger breaks) - good for small hands.
Maybe a Walther PPQ.
I would have said Glock 34 Gen 4 but you already have a Glock 23; I would just buy the lower price 40 to 9 conversion barrel and use the 40/9 for range and OEM 40 barrel for SD.

I would have to kindly disagree with osbornk, in that my GF traded a SD40 for the HK in that it would not always feed correctly and the Apex trigger didn't help much. She didn't feel comfortable with it(reliability), and therefore we got rid of it. I will admit the grips did feel good though.

From your list I like the VP-9 the best. The P-01 is a good option as well.

Since you are open to other models, I'll recommend a few.

The Walther PPQ is very ergonomic with a smaller grip diameter. It's fully ambidextrous, well made, has great trigger characteristics, and is extremely accurate. Around $600.00

The Steyr M9-A1 (4") or L9-A1 (4.5") is very ergonomic with a smaller grip diameter. It's well made, has great trigger characteristics, is very accurate, and has very low recoil/muzzle flip. Around $500.00

The Sig 226 or 229 used would fit in your price range. With E2 grips, they also have a smaller diameter grip.

The Sphinx SDP is a great model too. I like mine but, would likely be the first of my current 9mm's to go. I got mine a couple of months ago and only paid $860.00 for a new one after shipping and transfer. If you take you time you should be able to get a used one for quite a bit less.

I didn't think of that one ^^^ A PPQ is a very good option, and has an awesome trigger. My friend has one in .40 cal.

The SP-01s seem to be sold out everywhere online. Buds has the VP9 for $590 cash price and they just built a new shop about 30 minutes from me.

I've handled the Steyr M9A1s. They're strange but I kind of like them so I'll see if one pops up in a shop near me.

I am correct in thinking the SP-01 is DA/SA, right? I hate DAO triggers.

I have handled the FNS pistols and was not thrilled with the way it felt in my hands.

HK P2000, I will give it a look if I can find one locally.

*Edit: Just looked at the P-09 Duty on impact guns and I like it. How does it compare to the SP-01?

Since you are considering the HK VP9, I encourage you to look strongly at the Walther PPQ. They are the best kept secret in polymer guns. Best trigger in polymer for sure. Check out the many Youtube videos of people comparing it to other guns. I love mine. The other options you mention are great too.

Wow... Looks almost exactly the same as the HK, except for the takedown lever and mag release.

So here's my list of guns to go play with at Buds so far...

SP-01
P-09 Duty
PPQ
VP9
P2000
Steyr M9A1
Beretta PX4

I'm heavily leaning towards one of the CZs at this point with the HK coming in a distant 3rd. Just to clarify once more this pistol is going to be mainly a range gun that I may occasionally carry. I have no qualms about carrying a full size gun.

Like you I've just recently gotten into 9mm as well. I've been a revolver guy for a long time, sold my only other 9mm back in the early 80's. For a full size gun I went with a CZ P09 and am not disappointed. Good trigger, very reliable, and very good accuracy. I did add a brighter white to the three dot sights and that helped a lot. It also has three different size back straps to help with fit. I don't have a lot of experience with a lot of other guns for a comparison, just relating my experience with the P09.

Thank you sir, bout to use my Google-Fu and see who's got the best price on them. I've found P-07s locally but no P-09s, even at Buds in Sevierville.

I'm a little late to the party, but I vote for the conversion barrel for your G23. It's cheaper than buying a new gun, you're already familiar with the weapon, and it'll give you a chance to really familiarize yourself with the 9mm and decide if you want to get another one.

I own a CZ SP-01 Tactical, and the extra mass really makes it the softest-shooting 9mm I've ever fired. It's softer than even the steel .380's like the PPK. I love it and would recommend it in a heartbeat if you really want to expand your collection in 9mm... but the conversion barrel really feels like the most practical choice.

I believe there are several comparisons on YouTube. The P-series (07 and 09) are fantastic weapons. I think you will be absolutely thrilled with the P-09 and the price is really, really hard to beat. Some amazing accuracy noted on those things too.

I'll second this. I've owned both the SP-01 Tactical and standard SP-01, and they are easily the softest recoiling 9mm's I've ever shot. Their 39oz. EMPTY, even more with a full 19rd mag, and muzzle heavy, so they stay right on target during a string of shots. Definitely recommend picking one up if you can find them!

Did you say if it was to be used as a EDC or range gun or both?
I just purchased a Sig Sauer P226 in 9mm for both carry and impromptu range. Nice SA pull as well as a DA pull if you need it in a hurry.
De-cocker and tritium sights, 15 rd. mag. capacity. As far as pretty goes has rosewood grips. Nice grip feel.

Ditto George above. I like my Lone Wolf 40-9mm conversion barrel for the G23. In fact if you're keeping your G23, it's a no-brainer - $100 for another caliber. I also use the G23 conversion barrel in my G27 with excellent results. You might want to google this and watch YouTube videos, a lot of people use the conversion barrel for practice/range use with cheaper 9mm. Some even use 40S&W mags to feed 9mm. I got 9mm mags but find the standard G23 and G27 extractors and RSAs are very reliable with 9mm.

I only use for practice, wouldn't chance for serious use. For that there are plenty of reliable 9s.

It is mainly for range use, occasional carry (My 1911 is still
my go-to EDC) and SHTF as 9mm is the most common handgun round on Earth. If it grows on me enough it may replace my 5" 1911 as a carry gun. I prefer to carry full size guns and don't have much use for pocket guns or semi/sub compacts.
