Congressman Walter Jones wants Federal investigation of NiFong?

Why? This is a CONSERVATIVE republican asking for federal interference in a North Carolinia matter. This is the business of the state of North Carolina, not the Federal government. Mike NiFong is, (i'd like to say was), a local District Attorney. The state should deal with him.

This sounds like another neo-con with good intentions trying to have himself and the feds play the superhero of the day.

Sounds more like someone who is asking the fed to actually do its job of enforcing the 14th Amendment by guaranteeing that states will not treat citizens adversely due to nothing more than their race.

Looking at the way the Feds handle things I have more trust in the NC Attorney General. Consider all the help the American people have had from the
Feds at the gas pump, ATF, and other Fed Agencies storm trooper approach to citizen's rights at times, the IRS ditto at times. Its NCs problem, they can and will handle it.

I agree with the rest of your comment cuate, but like sasquatch said, what rights do you think you have at the gas pump besides to pump or not to pump?
Gas prices are not really high when you consider that the entire cost of living all across the board has gone up. You are paying more for bread or tires or ammo than you did 5 years ago. It's up to the free market not the government to control the economy, which is at the heart of what you and I are saying about the NiFong situation. It's a domestic NC problem, none of the Federal government's business.

Adjusting for inflation, a gallon of gasoline is cheaper than it was 25 years ago.

Would you like the "Feds" to fix that ???

Not that I dont believe you, that just seems kinda odd...did you read this in an article and if so which one, I would like to read it

thanks

At the very least we should do what they do in England where the innocent party is reimbursed for attorneys fees. It's not unlike our brilliant health insurance system, perfectly innocent people bankrupted for no good reason. But that's all we can expect when we let lobbyists write our laws. Make that 'their laws'.

Probably to make SURE Nifong gets charged with something. if NC Drops the ball then they can go after him for Violation of Civil Rights charges.. They do it to us Cops all the time, why shouldnt Corrupt Prosecutors be subject as well.

Well, I'm not defending NiFong, I think he should be in cuffs and on his way to jail, but when you let the federal government come into your community and start handling your problems...it will just as easily come in there and create problems. (and this applies to cops, da's and anything else in my mind) In essense it is saying the Federal government trumps your state. (I know a lot of people think this way these days, but just the same it is not the way I think) The Federal government is supposed to be the servant of the states not be lord over the states.

KDPipes is correct. Too many local governments use the "sweep it under the rug" philosophy on potentially embarrasing conduct by public officials. Especially in cases where the individual may have embarrasing information about the people who told them "what to do".

There are a number of guidelines to be followed prior to DOJ intervention. NC is aware of them, and has been for decades.

I'm still waiting for Sharpton to lose his radio show in retaliation for his racist comments about the team.

I'm still waiting for Sharpton to lose his radio show in retaliation for his racist comments about the team.

What I don't get is why Sharpton, Jackson, NAACP, Black Panthers and all the other black "leaders" and so-called civil rights ministers jumped onto the Duke Lacross thing crying about indignities over nothing more than a crazy streetwalker/prostitute/whore. Setting aside the fact that the above said groups takes every problem that arises on earth and turn it into a "racist" thing to keep the spotlight (and money) on them, is this the kind of image they want? What does that say about the so-called "black leadership" and anyone who supports them?

I will say, that I'm not sure the players are entirely innocent. Of course they are innocent of any legal wrongdoing, but in a way they invited this when they had party put on with a sleazy prostitute on the guest list. You lay in the garbage and you are going to smell like trash.

I'm glad they got cleared, but I hope they learned a lesson.

As an aside, did you know that the Federal government makes more on a gallon of gasoline than the oil company does?

Don't know if that's true or not, but I'll certainly defer to your research. However, as an aside, did you know that the oil companies are posting higher profits in the past three years than have any other corporations in U.S. history?

It ain't just the OPEC guys, guys. U.S. oil companies are "stealing" us blind.

NC's judicial system has some major problems. The problems are longterm and systemic. What the world saw with with Nifong is merely the tip of the iceberg. Has anyone ever asked a simple question. Why would a DA in NC do something so profoundly stupid as tamper with evidence in a criminal case? How could seemingly educated, intelligent, and experienced individuals do something that is incredibly ill-advised on it face? DA's in NC though elected, are not stupid. Yet here we have a museum grade idiot doing the unthinkable.

Why did he do it? Is it possible he did it because he has done so in the past with impunity and has experience as a DA doing the same thing. In other words, Nifong was operating according to standard operating procedure. And that is exactly why the federales need to get involved. NC justice system is corrupt. Nifong merely turned on a flashlight.

To remove any doubt I am accusing the NC judicial system of systemic corruption. Hopefully the Nifong fiasco will open a few window to the entire story.

Abstract
It ain't just the OPEC guys, guys. U.S. oil companies are "stealing" us blind.

You need to find a different business sector to rag on about profits. Your whining about oil company profits doesn't fly.

For the year 2006, here are net profit margins for a few companies:

Chevron --- 8.16%
Shell --- 8.25%
Exxon --- 10.5%
Time-Warner --- 11.56%
McDonald's --- 13.3 %
Pepsi --- 16%
Johnson & Johnson --- 20%
Coca-Cola --- 21%
Pfizer --- 22.82%
Citigroup --- 24%
Microsoft --- 28%
Bank of America --- 29%

Do you think it was inappropriate for me to point out that it is a PR site? It's good to be aware of who is sponsoring things, and the motivations behind things. It helps one keep things in context.
