Confused on next purchase.

I am confused on my next purchase. I am split betweem 2" SW 38spl, GP100 or Sig P220.

I really cannot make up my mind.

Need help deciding.

Thanks

*price is a non factor

What's confusing? They are all pretty different designs. Are you sure it's not just indecisiveness? What's the intended use?

I cannot decide. The intended purpose is just addition to my collection and to be used for fun on range.

I can buy only at the moment.

It depends on what you want.

Is it a carry gun? Then the 2" .38

if not, or you're not bound by size for carry:
Do you like revolvers? GP100
Do you prefer autos? Sig

Edit: Beat my post.

I'd say the GP 100

While I prefer the S&W 686 over the GP100, I also prefer revolvers over semiautomatic pistols. I have a S&W 686, .357 magnum, 4" barrel and a S&W 3913, 9mm, 3 1/2" barrel. I prefer the revolver.

I'd pick the S&W 686 over the Sig 220. Why ?

1- I prefer revolvers
2- I prefer a .357 magnum over the .45acp

I do not own a .45acp firearm, and doubt I ever will. I prefer .357 magnum and .44 magnum (S&W 329PD and 629 Classic 6 1/2". I like the triggers on the S&W handguns. I like the versatility of the .357 & .44 magnums.

The SW in consideration is NOT 357 but a 38spl, and NOT 4" but a 2".

What do you say now?

What do you think of Ruger GP100?

Go with the GP. So many different .357 Mag. and .38 Special loads to play with...BANG! POW! Loud is fun!*:D

*Always wear proper hearing protection.:)

If you do not any sig sauer pistol. The sig 220 in 45 acp is the one to get. I have sig 9mms 226 & 228 but who goes to the range with me? the 220 sig. it shoot like a dream. never fails factory load. hand loads it eats them all up. Get the sig you will never regret it.

Mahoo, why did you prefer gp over sig?

Basically, I am more into revolvers these days. The .357 gives you a lot of variety for ammo, which is nice, IMO.

The Sig is a very nice gun, of course. I would just recommend a revolver for a fun gun.

I guess it depends on what else you already have in your collection, though. I have 4 revolvers (mostly .45 colts) and 4 auto's (mostly .45acp's) My next purchase is likely to be a 4" .357 revolver, and probably a Ruger at that.

What's the availability of .38/.357 revolver ammunition over there in Pakistan, Firepower? Seems to me to be a distinctly "American" form of ammunition... I would think that the middle east and asia would largely be dominated by automatics.

Thats a very good point, azredhawk44. I'm curious as to the availability of even .45acp, since it is largely an American. I would think that 9mm and .380 are probably the most prevailant.

That's interesting. I could see a shortage on 10mm and .357sig; neither is very popular or readily available here. I am surprised that .40S&W is hard to get; I would think it one of the more common calibers, next to 9mm and .45acp.

Although it is now loaded by some international ammunition companies (Wolf, S&B, Fiocci, Magtech etc.), the .40 S&W is a distinctly American cartridge. It's popularity here has been driven by it's wide acceptance among police agencies. I don't think that has happened outside of the U.S. and maybe Cananda.

Firepower .... Geeze Louise ... The .357 magnum shoots .38s with less recoil than a .38spl ... not the other way around.

A 4" .357 magnum is my preference, as stated in my post. Your comment does not change my personal preference, as stated. A GP100 (no barrel length mentioned) was noted. How is a reader to eliminate a 4" GP100 from the original post ? Personally I do not care for 2" barrel revolvers. I went with a 9mm S&W 3913 for the shortest barrel handgun I own.

I carry a 4" 686 sometimes, and like it a lot more than a 2" .38spl. I also like the trigger, fresh out of the box, of a S&W over that of a Ruger. I picked S&W 686, 4" over the Ruger GP100 for that reason, and later bought the S&W 627PC for that reason, smoother trigger than the S&W 686. I shoot at 50 yards with the 627PC what I shoot at 25 yards with the 686 (The 627 is also 5" barrel). These are not 'Pocket pistols', but I do use a fanny pack, belly band, or cross draw holster with them.

Different strokes .... I do not think you can go wrong with either revolver S&W .38spl, or Ruger GP100. I just personally prefer S&W revolvers. If all I had was the choice of a S&W .38 Spl, or a Ruger GP100, I pick the GP100 if a gunsmith was available to do a custom trigger job. Otherwise I'd pick the .38Spl, if it was newer and up to .38 Spl +P loads. If the .38 Spl was older and limited to .38 Spl ammunition, I'd go with the Ruger GP100 ... even if it is a 2" GP100 it ought be able to shoot .38 Spl +P reasonably well at 10 yards, or Speer 'Short Barrel' loads, if you can get them.

I finally am able to have a meaningful response to a question you have asked. I have been aware of your unique situation and hope you all the best. As far as recommending one gun over the other, I would undoubtedly prefer the Sig 220 to the 38 SW right now.
I have a Sig p220 SAS that is an absolute dream. It is a serious form of engineering that is aesthetically as good as it gets. The 2" 38 SW that I own is a weapon of pure circumstance and neccesity. It would not have been added to my collection as quickly as it was had it not been for the girl I was seeing at the time. I now have it and like the way it is easy to carry and conceal but it is not the ideal revolver I would chooce. But the lock-less SW I haven't been able to see/afford when I was presented with one. Anyways I hope this helps! Good Luck
