Conditions of US inner cities and choice of arms

Obviously the best solution would be to leave the danger area, but by the time it happens it may be too late.

Riots have repeatedly ravaged areas only 1-2 blocks from me.

Would it be tactically sound to buy anti-riot stuff like bear spray, pepper balls, smoke grenades, bean bag and rubber bullet shells for a shotgun? It gives me a weird feeling to think about it, I don't know why. Probably because the DA considers farting in someones general direction a use of deadly force. To my knowledge everything I mentioned but bear spray and smoke grenades is technically deadly force in CA. Tasers are illegal to carry here, I don't know about buying.

Riots?

Avoid 'em if at all possible. Don't buy or rent a home in riot-prone areas. Because if there are enough people on the other side of your wall, if they want to, they're coming in and taking what they want no matter how well-armed you are.

Most homes aren't fortresses. They are barely defensable and their "security" is laughable. If attracting attention is not an issue, any 12-year-old can get into your house in five minutes or less and if he can, 350 of your neighbors who are having a really, really bad day can do it, too; while you are valiantly fending off the ones at the front door, their fellows will be climbing in through the windows and they'll be just as pleased with you as WW I soldiers were with enemy machine-gunners. (Yes, they've no right to be irked. Wanna tell 'em that?)

Ante-Katrina New Orleans didn't have "riots," they had much smaller gangs of looters. That, you can face down if well-armed and win more often than not -- but the odds are a lot worse than the ones you face commuting to work in rush-hour traffic and it still would have been preferable to have skipped town with all your valuables well ahead of the mess.

If you're facing one or two bad guys, a firearm is excellent protection. If you're facing a dozen, it's less so; better arm your spouse, too. If you're facing 50 or 100... Well, I plan on taking an honor guard along if there's no way to get out unmolested. Your mileage may vary, but don't make plans for dinner.

Most walls don't stop bullets. Most windows don't stop clubs. Riots (and zombies) are not the likeliest reasons in your life you'll need to be armed. --If riots do come your way, you'll need armor as much as arms -- probably food and water, too, which you ought to have anyway for the more common sorts of snafus. If you've just gotta have that house in Looting'n'Unrest Acres, add a well-concealed, thick-walled safe room off your basement and if trouble comes, lay low 'til it has passed. You'll be a lot better off.

Posting on an internet forum is unlikely to do you much good -- better hire that backhoe and get to digging now! ;)

In the free states, I'd wager the collective law-abiding firearm-owners have significantly more "firepower", both in terms of quanitity and sophistication/diversity of the equipment. Drug cartels aside, your average street thug's felony record is going to limit his selection of firearms to the typical junk (usually .22-.38) floating around on the illegal market.

And yet many law-abiding citizens choose to protect themselves with things like NAA mini revolvers and Kel Tec P32s.

I would also bet that most of those folks do so out of convience. I'd be willing to make another wager and bet that most Kel-Tec and NAA owners have at least 1 other firearm. Just because you carry a mousegun exclusively doesn't mean you don't have a .50BMG in the safe at home.

I carry a .380 to work more often then any of my 9mm+'s, but I still have the other guns Am I going to fight back a lawless mob with my Bersa Thunder? No. But I'm betting I will have more than enough time to travel the 2 miles home from work and get what I need before that mob even forms.

The mob scene would be comparable to the "zombie scenario." Only the looters/mob would probably be moving faster :D

Only option is board up the windows and take head-shots for either scenario :D

You got that right. For every day carry I sometimes carry something as large as a .40S&W but quite often carry smal firearms like a .38 revolver or .380 PPK and sometimes even a .32 Seecamp. However, the top shelves of my gun cabinet at home consists of three .44mags, three .45colts, and one .45acp pistol. Then add in the 9mm and a 4 or 5 .357mags and there is enough firepower there to handle most situations. Just because I carry small firearms that are easy to conceal and require good shot placement doesn't mean that is all I have.:)

I'm very well armed I just have that problem that every time I bulk up on ammo I tend to shoot it all off.
That is the one good thing about the ranges around here requiring you to buy your ammo from them...it keeps you from depleting the home supply.
