Conditions of US inner cities and choice of arms

Considering the chaos after Katrina, looking at the immigrant riots in France, and just casually observing the pressure lid of inner city Los Angeles, do you feel that law abiding suburban home owners are properly protected from mass criminal insurections?

I am guessing that the normal law abiding community generally has less firepower than the criminal underworld, except for perhaps in the more gun friendly states.

>Since it seems that local law enforcement is usually only staffed to take care of "normal" emergencies and relies on National Guard forces for those exceptions like what you cite.
>And since it takes time for those National Guard forces to mobilize meaning by the time they get there the damage has already been done.
>And since your "average" suburbanite isn't armed at all any more hence can't take care of their own protection needs:

It pretty well stands to reason that your "average" suburbanite is NOT adequately protected against such mass criminal insurrections.

At least here on my street we happen to be fairly well armed. I know for sure that 4 households on this block (including, of course, mine) are armed, there may be more. That's roughly 30% that I know of. And I know that at least 2 of those households that I know aren't armed have expressed desires to become so. But then again, this happens to be one of those more gun friendly states like what you mention. For that matter, the test case for universal arming of law abiding households -- Kennesaw, Ga -- is just right next door to the north.

We are ready for the zombies. I have another poster you should bond with - he's always stewing and ready for the mobs to come to his neighbor where he lives with his momma.

:D

BTW - go to a carbine match in TX.

In the free states, I'd wager the collective law-abiding firearm-owners have significantly more "firepower", both in terms of quanitity and sophistication/diversity of the equipment. Drug cartels aside, your average street thug's felony record is going to limit his selection of firearms to the typical junk (usually .22-.38) floating around on the illegal market.

Your average freedom-loving red state gun nut is going to have all kinds of cool toys. And any one of the aformentioned gun nuts who knows what TEOTWAWKI stands for will likely have some sort of ammo reserve to feed those toys. :D

Meaning that even your average "armed" suburbanite who only has a bedside .38 is on pretty much equal or better footing than your average thug. And those who have a shotgun are better armed than your typical thug. Scatter in a few "gun nuts" who are better armed yet and things don't look too good for the thugs.

From what I've come to understand with regards to most of those criminal insurrections such as Katrina, Andrew and such, a few armed citizens patrolling the neighborhood with whatever they might have -- be it revolvers, hunting rifles, shotguns or whatever -- pretty well keep the BGs at bay unless they are trying to protect a "high value" location like a pharmacy or some such. The BGs usually go find easier pickings than face getting shot at.

A simple idea that I was taught" prepare for the worst, hope for the best, deal with what comes." The man who stores food is a fool until there is nothing to eat. The man who stores water is a fool until there is no water to drink. Simply put being prepared is good sense when and if the times come, and I am not a fortune teller.

I was gonna say what GB_in_GA said. In my experience, the hoodlums have pretty crappy weaponry and non-existent marksmanship skills.

I saw a special the other day on the National Geographic Channel, which detailed the '92 south central Los Angeles riots, which mirrored the '65 Watts riots (percieved greivance by police vs. a member of black community, followed by chaos), and it was quite clear in each case that the police strategy is to cut and run when the going gets tough (actually well in advance of when the going gets tough; they pull out when the going gets a smidge uncomfortable), and leave citizens on their own. This type of thing WILL happen again; the police WILL cut and run again. So if you live there, or other similar large cities with similar societal pressures/racial tensions, then I'd be much better armed than I now. Where I live, it ain't gonna happen, so I'm *too* armed as it is, if there can be such a thing.

Where are these riots taking place though? How many of them actually take place in residential areas where the home owner actually need to defend their home and not a business.

What is this pressure lid in L.A. you are talking about? Are you talking of the gang warfare between the Blacks and Latinos?

If you look at what happened in Katrina as well as Andrew, you'll see that there were some pretty large scale lawlessness going on that was NOT limited to just the looting of businesses, but was directed against residential areas as well.

I can't imagine the horrific behavior of a Katrina like disaster transpiring up here in the North. However, if it did, my nieghbors and I can put a stop to it in about 5 minutes, maybe 6.:)

With all of the firepower in my house, and the neighbors across the street, we could secure our block and maybe more, quite easily.

I'm extremely unprepared for mass criminal insurrection.

I am, however, very prepared for a dinner party this coming Friday evening. I even have a new set of grill utensils. I gave them a test drive tonight using this puppy (no it’s not really a puppy, it’s beef):

And because meat with out potatoes is a sin, I had a baked potato back-up ready:

Drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, and rubbed with spices - a before-grill ritual - meanwhile the grill is a preheated blistering 500 degrees.

If nothing else, I'll be able to slow down the criminal element with a good meal, which ultimately results in a well deserved nap; an integral part of my escape plan.

Plan B, gentlemen! Plan B!

It's not always about how many rounds you have stockpiled!

Yeah, I'm inner city ect. If there is a riot heading my way, I'll leave if I can. Sure I have the firepower to waste any number of people heading my way, and the geographic advantage engadge at a great distance, but I also have lots of insurance. Anyway, who wants to explain a few dozen/hundred minority corpses to a rabid anti-gun DA in the (possibly) most liberal state in the union? Not me.

If you see disaster is on the way... Drive to the closest, most heavily armed, most friendly, neighboring state.

I went to Texas because I did not want to get stranded in southern Mississippi on the way to Florida.

A house and some junk are not worth your life. Get the hell outta town.

Trip20,

If there is trouble I will come protect you if you promise to cook some of those up.:)

As for any trouble here I like to think I am at least prepared to hold my own for a little while. The extra ammo/magazines are stored around the house. And these pics were taken before I got my new .357maf Taurus 605 or my .44mag Ruger Alaskan.:)
