Concealed Carry

My father is looking to for a cheap, but reliable gun for concealed carry. Right now he is carrying a semiauto .22. I have been telling him to get something bigger and finally he is listening to me. Anyone have any suggestions?

My first choice would be the SIG P239 in 9mm.

After that, I would suggest he try out a glock 26 or glock 19.

ump45, I suggested those as well, but he don't want to spend that much money...I was kinda thinking of a Mak...

Mak sounds like it meets all your criteria...go for it.

To get anything significantly better in any criteria, you'd have to spend a lot more money.

If its good enough for the KGB...

(I carry Kel-Teks though. A P-11 because I like the 11-round capacity and the light weight. A P-32 because its about the best value in pocket pistols. )

See about used Sigs say 239, 230 or 225. They're out there just gotta look around and find your price. Glocks also, being much more plentiful.

I have a Kel-Tec and a Glock...I let him shoot my Kel-Tec and he liked it. He hasn't shot the Glock yet...but after he does...I could probably talk him into getting a used one. Thanks everybody for the ideas. I will pass them on and let you know the outcome.

Bersa Thunder 380 (.380) ($250 cheap)
CZ-75D PCR (9mm) ($350)
Beretta Cheetah (.380 or 9mm) ($450)
SIG P239 (.40 S&W) ($550)
Kahr K9 (9mm) or K40 (.40 S&W) ($650)

Rickmeister, just one correction. Seems you're comparing street prices of other guns to the list pricing on the Kahr. Street price for the K9/40, or elite versions of the MK (MK9, MK40) are about $550, so your post is inflated by about $100.

Just wanted to set the record straight. :)

Really oughtta have him try as many as possible and see what gets along with him. If he likes it, he will shoot it more, the more he shoots it the better he will get, and the safer he will be.

Also, if he likes it, will be more likely to have it with him in time of need.

Sam

I agree with C.R. Sam, have him try as many as possible. Don't be in a rush. I love my EG Makarov, super reliable, and a good shooter too. Ammo is inexpensive. www.dansammo.com $60 per 500 of Barnual HP. Good Luck!

.380

The FEG SMC-380 is a lot of gun for the money and small to boot. Mags are expensive, but it comes with one extra for less than $200.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think he is going with the Mak. He said that him and a bunch of guys at the Genesee County Sheriffs Dept are getting Maks, they are trying to work out a deal...with whoever they are buying them from. But thanks again for all of the suggestions.

Don't forget the PA 63 is pretty close in size to the Mak and it's lightweight to boot ( and even cheaper by about $50 ).

Bersa Thunder .380. They are NOT $250. They are about 180-190 NIB at any gunshow. Awsome gun. Stay away from that Kel-Tec crap. I want your father to win in a gun battle. If you want to win in a gun battle just throw your Kel-Tec at the bad guy and while he's trying to get it to work you can run away.

enfwago . . .

1) Sam's advice (as always) is excellent.

2) I would certainly include quality Colt, Ruger and especially used S&W (K, L and N frame) revolvers in .38/.357. They meet all your criteria: inexpensive, ultra-reliable, concealable plus exceptionally flexible (the widest variety of loads) and very effective (the .357 magnum remains the "gold standard" of stopping power).
