Concealed Carry Permit Question

I live in PA, too (Beaver County), and was under the impression that, although PA is a shall issue state, certain details about CCW licenses are up to the discretion of the county sheriffs, e.g., fingerprinting, photo or non-photo licenses, and general hassle to acquire a CCW. I've heard of some counties where the sheriff has a sit-down with each applicant and reads them the riot act, and others where you fill out the form, wait for clearance, and pay your $20 without any hassle. Beaver Co. is relatively straightforward, no fingerprints, no photo required, but of course an appropriate background check is performed.

I guess Montgomery country is pretty close to no hassle. While they did do the fingerprints, I didn't even talk to anyone but the clerk when I picked up the permit. The sheriff had a one page letter in the packet, basically it said you're assuming an big responsibility, be careful. I also only had to go in once, I had them mail me the application.

I live in Northampton Co PA, no fingerprints, but it does have a pic. Took about 2 1/2 weeks to come.

My bud got his in Carbon Co PA, no prints either, but pic was there. He got his CCW in about 5 minutes!!

Like awisler said, it varies a lot by county.

After reading what some people have to go through to get a CCW I'm happy to like in Washington State. Yed we get our prints taken, they do a computer background check, you pay your $60 Boom you have a CCW.
Takes about 5min.

In Florida, you need a pistol safety course. Mine took about 2 hours, and the guy said he's never had anyone fail. I think that they've changed the law to make the course longer and include a range session. You also need pictures and prints. Mail them to Tallahassee and about 90 days later you get your permit (with a photo). Mine was like 130 bucks for 3 years. I believe the renewal was about 90 bucks. They've also changed the renewal term from 3 to 5 years. However, the newer permits still require a background check each time you purchase a gun, while my older one doesn't.

In San Diego, your picture and fingerprint is on the permit. It's really just a laminated piece of paper. The picture is taken when you apply as the fingerprint. It also says something to the effect of "Any peace officer may take this permit if this person is arrested for any reason"

You go through a background check, prints to the DOJ and FBI, long application and then you MIGHT get your permit three months later.

Luckily, Sheriff Kolender is one of the good guys who will issue for a valid reason. He was the PD chief in San Diego for many years, too. Most places in California is impossible to get an application, let alone a permit. LA - forget it!

No fingerprinting down here in the great ole South. You fill out the form and include a color photo. 2 weeks later you get your permit.

You do not have to include any pistol discription or serial numbers.

Plain and simple..

Louisiana does require fingerprinting. The class that you have to pass is VERY basic and the shooting requirements are almost a joke but hey, I got my CCW so I'm happy. And I got it when they first came out so they don't do any type of check on me at all when I purchase. :D

If you're talking about fingerprints for the CCW in PA, Montgomery county certainly does them. The interesting thing is my permit has no picture, I'd think that would be a good idea if they want to know who's permit it is.

Yeah, I got a permit to carry,it's called the friggin Constitution.---Ted Nugent

Maryland is technically a CCW state, but it is nearly impossible to obtain one and then only under restrictions. A businessman who carries money to the bank can get one but it is only good when he is carrying money. Of course this sort of thing prevents the BGs from being armed, the governor says.

In Buck County, PA - no finger prints, they photocopied my drivers license picture and pasted it on the permit. I received the permit in the mail two days later! Zero hassle, no questions asked.

I also got a very good feeling from the very first paragraph in the (91 pages)manual, "Pennsylvania Laws Pertaining to Firearms". It says:

PART 1
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS
21. Right to bear arms.

The right of citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned.
(Pennsylvania Constitution, Article 1, Section 21)
