Concealed carry folks....

First I live in Maryland where getting a permit is a non-starter. Second ,I acknowledge this thread

But in that thread it is tough to sort through what I am looking for, and that is who carries BIG? I mean CC a big colt 45 cowboy gun with a 4.5+" barrel, or a full size 1911 versus all the teeny tiny compact CC guns out there today?

I carry a Glock 23 concealed at times. Sorry, but I'm not that big of an ol' boy, and don't even try to conceal a full sized SA .45. Not when it's far easier, legal, and even well accepted to open carry it.

The 23 is about as big as I'll conceal, and it's plenty.

A 5" 1911 ends up hitting the seat before me and then drives the grip into my ribs. So I carry a steel commander. In defensive handguns as in motors, here is no replacement for displacement.

I have a 4" steel 1911 on my hip as I type this. I am wearing shorts, a (flimsy) military web belt and a t-shirt.

I am 50++, 5' 9", 150-ish pounds, and had spinal fusion surgery four years ago.

During the winter, when I can wear a cover garment, I regularly carry a 4" N-frame.

Not difficult at all.

As the previous poster said, any longer of a barrel poses a problem, but the weight is not an issue.

Maybe should have added a question on shoulder holster versus hip, which wouldn't surprise me if that were a legal issue.:D

I'm 6 ft 250 and barrel chested. I can conceal and often do conceal a full size 1911 with jeans and a t-shirt. However, recently my back started bothering me so I switched to an H&k 45c or G19. They are the same size and that H&K shoots as nice as my custom 1911s in my hands.

I carry a CZ sp-01, which is thicker than a 5" 1911 and about as long. It's doable, you just have to dress to the gun and use a good belt and holster. I like carrying as large of a gun as is reasonable for me, so I sold all my small guns.

I carry a full size 1911.

It's what I train with, shoot well, and enjoy shooting.

In the end it doesn't matter what ANYONE else opts to carry for their self defense, it's what YOU want to carry, and are WILLING to carry.

While some arms have the potential to be more effective than others, simply due to power/size, I can't think of anyone that would WANT to be shot by ANY firearm. I wouldn't.

If I had my way, I'd carry my M4 everywhere I went, and those are light at 9lbs (with accessories :p) when compared to an M249 or M240. Handgun weight is nothing. :D

I carry a full size all steel 1911 in the winter months. A good leather gun belt and a good holster are all you really need. You will need to learn to dress around your gun and if you are willing to do so, you can carry just about any thing.

With that said, there will be a time you won't feel like lugging your big gun around and you'll want some thing a bit smaller. I'm not suggesting you don't carry a big gun, I still regularly carry my 1911, but I am suggesting at some point you'll also likely migrate to a smaller gun too.

That is an excellent way to sum it all up.

Its also been said that someone who is a true gun enthusiast and enjoys carrying will find a Desert Eagle or S&W N Frame easy to carry and conceal wearing nothing more than shorts and a T-shirt. Heck, they could conceal an AR in the winter time. OTH, someone who is carrying only for protection (and reluctantly at that, they may not even really like guns) often find it hard to conceal a P3AT in the middle of winter in North Dakota. I swear, someone posted such a thread on TFL or THR in the last year or so :) .

So YMMV.

I used to carry a 5" steel 1911 everyday, with no problems at all. Actually with a good gun belt and holster, it was really quite easy (for the record, I am 6'7" and 200 lbs).

But the 1911 started having reliability issues, and I've not carried it in over a year. In it's place, I've been carrying 2.5" - 4" medium and large frame revolvers (2.5" S&W 66, 4" Ruger Police Service Six, 4" S&W N Frame) with little difficulty (the N Frame is a bit more of a challenge, but it is doable).

I am 6'5'' 290 lb.. I CC a G21 with an uncle mikes IWB holster..

I have a nice love handle that the pistol blends in with! Being fat ain't all bad!

Between the pistol and the mag the holster holds,, iit's nice having 27 rounds just in case I get attacked by a mob of zombies or ninja's... Never know what you'll run into at the flea market around here...

I'm what you could call "full growed". I swap back anf forth a lot about what I carry, but for the most part I carry things like a Smith & Wesson 39-2, a Sigma (yes, that's right, a Sigma), and various K-frame, 4", revolvers.

I do have a Charter Arms 38 snubbie I carry more and more these days.

When I'm allowed to carry, it's my full-size 1911 almost always. Occasionally I'll carry a .380. and very seldom (but sometimes) it's a .44 Bulldog Pug (Charter Arms).

Currently working in Maryland, and therefore stripped of my right to self-defense.

I carry a fullsize Browning Hi Power 9mm at 3:30 IWB every day... Not bad at all with the right belt and holster. I've thought about a little LCP or something, but the BHP my IDPA gun and one that I've taken several classes with.... If I ever need a pistol, it darn well better be that one.

Edit: I'm a pretty stocky 5'10" at about 190

Yep, I live in Baltimore, one of the most violent cities in the US, and only the bad guys are "allowed" to carry. Well at least we have a new State's Attorney who is not playing around.

full size acp

I am a shorter pear shaped man of a current age with some back issues and I carry a full size 1911 in a shoulder hoslter is cool weather, in warm weather i carry in a crossbred tuckable with jeans and a extra large shirt and suspenders to support the weight. You carry what you shoot the best and trust you find the way to carry that is best for you. There is no magic bullet, it's what works for you.
