What are your opinions on the company history of walther?

Am I too extreme if I refuse to buy a walther because of the company history?

It may be irrational to dislike a product because of the history of the government of its country of origin or the 50-60 year old politics of the management of the company, but....
Irrational behavior is part of human nature.

My grandpa refuses even to consider a Mitsubishi becasue those were the engines that powered the planes that attacked his ship in the Pacific In WW2. so i could see the reasoning but isnt walther owned by smith and wesson which is owned by some british company? either way i still laugh at how many hippies drive VW's with out knowing that companies history.

Personally, I could care less what side of the war they were on back in WWII, as long as they have changed their ways about it since then. I mean, there are all sorts of companies who have public and private closet skeletons, I'd be silly to refuse to do business with a company based on what they did or failed to do 50 or so years ago. It is what they are doing right now that is important.

But on the subject of doing business with Walter in this present day and age: I have no qualms about buying new products from them right now, based on their political stance generations ago which they apparently no longer hold. I have no qualms about buying products that they made back in that time, for that matter -- they have been already made, they already exist and have existed for years, they are just artifacts, nothing more. They have exactly zero political significance -- to me, at least. To me, an old gun made by the Nazis (no invocation of Godwin's Law intended) is just an old gun, nothing more, nothing less. A new gun made by a company that was formerly associated with the Nazis (again, no invocation of Godwin's Law intended) is just a new gun, nothing more, nothing less.

I wouldn't hold a company responsible for its' actions in the past any more than I hold a man responsible for the actions of his ancestors. Star Trek said it best: "No Earth citizen can be made to answer for the crimes of their race or forebearers."

With apologies to Godwin, Henry Ford supported the Nazi party but that doesn't keep me from buying a Mustang....although a live rear axle does :barf:

I'm sure it would be easy to come up with a reason to hate every single company you might buy something from.

I'd rather hold Ruger responsible for what they did in the '90s than what wartime Walther did in the '40s.

Exactly. I mean, where does this end. I can't buy Fords's, IBMs. BMWs. Porsches, Mercedes, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Colt, HK (Mauser engineers you know), and so on. Wait a minute. What about all the U.S. companies with roots all the way back to Slavery!Good God, I have a headache. I guess I'll take a Bayer aspirin. Crap...http://www.cbgnetwork.org/365.html

So, do you feel the same way about Mausers?

the Mauser was the german rifle of choice (as well as many other nations) long before Hitler came into power and the same could be said about many companies that existed in europe and the the countries that germany annexed. but there are a few companies around today that were started by the Nazi party one of which is VW. a company under a government especially a socialist one that nationalizes all industry really cant be held liable for what it was forced to do under duress from the govt.

ALL WWII German military arms had WaffenAmt markings and proof marks with swastikas. Walther, Erma, Mauser....
Are you sure you'd love to have that MG34?

Are you sure you'd love to have that MG34?
Ouch! That was a little below the belt.
Well.... Does it have a swastika on it?
Technically, YOU made it.
So yes, I would LOVE to have your MG34.
I just realized that they shoot 8mm mauser!
Ill give you my credit card number, my soul, and my first born for it! :D

Neither Volkswagen or Walther have anything (other than the name) to do with the WWII companies.

The current VW company was established by the British to 1 employ Germans 2 provide cheap transport. It has been reorganized at least twice since.

The Walther company came into existance after WWII and for a long time sold guns made in France.

Umm, http://www.worldfreeinternet.net/news/nws151.htm

It has been common practice for German companies to say "oh that wasn't us, that was another company with the same product, symbols, etc." Get real. All these companies were reorganized after the war (by the allies) but they are the same companies.

They should pay the people they hurt. That said, I am not going to spend my life combing the historical record before I buy underwear.

Well.... Does it have a swastika on it?
It has a LOT more swastikas on it than my P38. Every major part has at least one swastika on it.
I was just kidding about the $2M price quote in the Full Auto forum.

It's not for sale.

I am not superstitious or religious, but I do not want to own anything with a swastika on it.
I just dont like what they represent.
And companies that supported the nazi party, should have died with it. IMO

If I made a gun, I would put the peace sign on it. :D
Someone needs to photoshop that. :)
