Compact/sub-compact auto to replace J-Frame

"My apologies to the OP for straying from his guidelines. I am just trying to speak as one revolver guy to another. "

Well, he did ask for opinions on what other guns to consider.

Oh, I forgot to mention your concern about the safety.

Just because it doesn't have a separate manual safety doesn't mean it doesn't have any safety features. Others know more about this than I do, but there's probably more than one internal safety that will prevent the gun from shooting unless the trigger is pulled.

To each his own, but I will never give up the reliability & KISS of a compact revolver for CCW.
Too many disadvantages switching to an auto IMO.

But again, to each his own :)

Why bother saying to each his own? You tell use why thing 1 is better than thing 2, tell us you wouldn't use thing 2, then ask us not to be offended.

Cossack your thoughts about the 80 series is correct in that they are rather large, esp to your comps.
I love Cheetahs but they are not exactly compact compared to other options.

As much as I love mine, this is NOT a pocket gun, which is what the Smith was. Short, light ~4 pound trigger SAO ..... C&L ...... in a pocket? Not in MY pocket.

Weighs 26oz empty, ~31 oz. loaded ..... very shootable, but not a pocket gun, if that's what the OP meant by replacement.

I agree the EMP is not a pocket gun. IMHO, anything weighing more than 20oz fully loaded is too heavy for a pocket. I rarely carry in the pocket anymore, and when I think of the term "easily concealed", I tend to think an IWB holster. The EMP would be a great CC pistol in a quality IWB holster.

But EMP meets all of the OP's stated criteria especially when it comes to shoot-ability. I don't own one but have fired a friends several times. Outstanding compact pistol. But your are right, if the OP wants to carry in the front pocket, the EMP won't work.

Agreed, Rifleman. Were the OP to ask what small auto to carry IWB, I'd suggest the EMP ...... but he asked for a replacement for his j-frame smith ..... which suggested to me "pocket carry" .... maybe I inferred too much .....

For something smaller than a Beretta 84, but larger than a typical subcompact, that brings me back to the CZ 2075 RAMI. The CZ 82/83 is about the same size as the Beretta -- not that much smaller than the 75 Compact. But, the RAMI, while not greatly smaller than an 82/83/84, should be significantly smaller than the Compact. With a Pearson grip extension you'll get a good grip on the 10-round mag, and the gun's spare mag is a flush-fitting 14-round Compact mag, so you'll certainly have no problem gripping that.

Thanks for the replies - they've all been helpful.

I might just end up keeping the 49 and carrying that, or just stealing my wife's Colt until she starts complaining. In the meantime, I'll be looking for all of these mentioned to try them out. Even though my ideal parameters were very specific, I'm open to at least considering the merits of just about anything, so every reply is helpful.

I usually carry both the Colt and the S&W revolver IWB, but it is nice to have something around that can slip into a pocket for the times when clothing or some other situation renders IWB impractical, althouhgI find that bolth the .380 Colt and the 49 disappear very well under almost anything when carried IWB.

Good luck in your search, Cossack. If you are looking for a pocket gun, the RAMI is too big in my opinion. I, too, want a pocket gun with a safety lock. The SIG 238 or 938, as others have said, are likely the best candidates, along with one of the Colt Mustang variants (I would think the .380 Govt is too big).

I'm willing to consider a .32 Auto, and I think all that's available here is the Beretta Tomcat.

If you're not dead set on all metal (try it once maybe?) I now carry a Kahr CM9 instead of a J frame. It feels better not to have the side of a cylinder rubbing against my leg and reloads are faster. The CM9 is inexpensive, and has a long pre-cocked DA pull like a *nice revolver trigger. It's got a better trigger pull than my J frames do (subjective) They do make an all metal version, the MK9, but being heavier it may not have as clearly a defined role, probably wouldn't pocket a MK9

Like some others, my first thought was the Sig P938 (9 mm ) or P238 (.380), the P238 being a bit smaller. My wife has a P238 and I like everything except the price, and I got over that by reminding myself that it was a one-time purchase. They are definitely worth a look, especially since you like the Mustang.

I have a 642 revolver and an LC9 auto. The LC is one of the smaller sub compacts other than a .380. It is 3 ounces heavier than the 642 when loaded, the 642 is a lot easier to get out of my pocket, I prefer it over the LC for pocket. You can test this, put your hand in your pocket, grasp the gun and draw as it facing a bad guy. 642 wins every time. I can also tell the LC is heavier than the 642. Both guns are a little large for blue jeans pockets.
My 2 cents worth.

KEEP THE 49 I still carry mine now and then in pocket with a Don Hume pocket holster Iam sitting here with a Colt Mustang on at present. But lots of small 9mm out their Bersa has a small single stack 9mm I have a Kahr CW-9 and a PF-9 KelTec Both those are nice carry. I suggest you try shooting some of those mentioned. But don't get rid of the 49. its a classic S&W Unlike like the key, MIM specials sold today as S&W

I semi-retired my SW m60 about 3 years ago. After 16+ years of having my jframe beside me, I was able to finally settle with a Ruger SR9C during the hotter months and a SW1911 Sub-Compact in the winter, where I'm willing to give up the extra capacity for a little more punch through heavy winter clothing.
