+1 for the CX4 Storm. I've shot it and the S2k quite a bit. The S2k did not run as reliably and I did not like the location of the charging handle - very hard to use especially under stress. I also don't think it comes with rails. Once you buy those, you are most of the way to a Storm.

Also +1 on any shotgun reccomendations larger than .410. I will disagree that a pump is simpler than a semi-auto. I think a quality semi is actually easier to use and, under stress, you don't have to worry about pumping or short stroking.

Home defence carbine

Hi I guess i am about as new to your site as it gets. MY vote for a home defence weapon for a small framed person with limited experience would be. A M1 carbine or a kel-teck 9mm or 40 s&w would be my choice. They are easy to teach someone to use, a weekend of shooting one of these is usually enough. The kel-teck 30rd glock mag, easy to mount a light or red dot. But don`t short change the old M1 carbine, it will do just about anything you ask it to do 30rd mag, I have used them a lot even carried one in VIET NAM, never let me down very each to teach to use. Thanks for leting me join your site. ken

My fiance weighs 110lbs max and hasntmuch problem shooting my m1a, and shes "recoil-sensitive". A pistol caliber carbine would be great and have less muzzleflash than an ar-15. I highly suggest you throw the idea of a rimfire out the window.

An ar-15 in 9mm is a good choice, as is the m1 carbine (love those little things, my mother has one next to her bed with a 20 round mag). I have limited experience with the keltec, but as far as cost/caliber it seems to be a good choice.

You could also teach her how to use a pistol. Thats what I did.

If a hoard of North Koreans or Iranians attacked my house :D I would just pick them off with one of my deer hunting rifles. If they got in the door I'd blast them in the face with a trap load out of my 12ga.

Those are my "home defense" weapons. :p I might get a 45acp pistol one of these days for more firepower.

But if a robber breaks in he's a dead man. Whether I use my .300 Win Mag, .270 Win or 12 ga. If they'll kill a deer they'll kill a man.

Well since the OP said 40 or 45 I guess I shouldn't have listed the 5.7 and NATO rounds.

But there wasn't anything on budget so here ya go, The HK USC .45 Carbine:

BTW, with the right ammo .308 / 7.62x51 penetrates in the range of various handgun rounds - 10" - 15"

.308 Hornady 110gr TAP rounds penetrate to around 10" and create a huge temporary stretch cavity. The round travels at 3075 fps, if there is such thing as Hydrostatic Shock - I think this round would create it.

.308 Hornady 155gr TAP rounds penetrate to 15" and also creates a significant temporary stretch cavity.

I'm not necesarily advocating the carbine either in rifle or pistol caliber for HD, but I just wanted to put the info out there.

If a horde of North Koreans are attacking your house - they're coming for your rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned goods, and any meat, vegetables and produce you've got in your fridge.

They're very hungry...

I don't have personal experience with the 9mm AR15 but I've read a couple places that the 9mm actually recoils MORE. you don't have as much powder but the projectile does way 2-3x more.

I have an old High Point 9mm. The trigger is worthless, even though it is very accurate. I fire a new one recently, the trigger was fairly ok. I have mine in an after market stock. That company should have taken the opportunity to have it use a high cap mag.
