Come the first of the year

I'm going to buy my first legal CCW weapon. Price and reliability are my two issues, that being said, Glock is the handgun I am considering. I own 3 handguns, a very small 22 mag. 5 shot, a S&W Airweight 38 spl snubby, and a 4" 44 mag, all wheel guns. Never owned a auto, but thats what I'm going for. I have never shot a 9mm or .40 S&W, so I know nothing about these rounds other than what has been said on forums like this.
The handguns I am now considering, with CC the main goal is:
In the compact size,
G 19 9mm Smallest of the two.
G 23 .40
In the sub compact size,
G 26 9mm
G 27 .40 Both the same size, different cal.
Also under consideration,
G 36 45 largest of the subs but still smaller than the compacts

Have heard the .40 is more of a bear to shoot than the 45. Am trying to learn what I can learn off forums like this, so I ask. The nearest store that carries these weapons (not all, but some) is a 150 mile round trip.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with any of these handguns ?
Opinions welcome....

You can't go wrong with any of the Glocks you mentioned. The Glock 19 and Glock 27 are two of my favorite carry weapons of all time.

They are all great. I love my G19. It is a perfect for a CCW, range, and SD gun. I also like the G36 a lot too. Get what you like. I chose the 19 over the 23, because 9mm is cheaper and easier to find (especially now), and it was my first gun. They are all good choices though.

If you are looking for an inside the waste band carry, Glock is too thick as many of the poly guns (9mm/.40/.45). OWB, leaves lots of options. Hard to hide the larger ones in summer attire. I can carry my PPKS (7+1 .380) inside with just a light shirt cover, and a Bianchi sued clip holster. Stepping up to even 9mm, is limited with IWB holster. If you can't easily conceal it all year, you won't carry it when you may need it. A 380 is better than than a larger cal left at home!

Sorry man, that simply is not true. I carry my G19 IWB all the time, as well as my smaller Kahr PM9, and my Colt Combat Commander XSE. You just have to buy your pants and belt a size bigger than you would normally wear and find a good holster.

With what you already have and the way you are leaning I would say Glock 19. Cheaper ammo, you can't beat them to death and effective with proper ammo. I carry a 40 because it is my issue pistol(H&K). I like the 40 but not in a Glock.

I'm going to buy my first legal CCW weapon.

Hi there. Good luck with your purchase! You'll find some excellent suggestions on which one here

I just want to mention- when describing this kind of thing, try to not say anything like "my first legal CCW weapon". It implies that up till now, you've been buying illegal ones, and you never know who's listening or reading. I would not even call it a 'weapon', I'd call it a 'firearm' :)

I really like my Glock 19 but Love my S&W M&P 9MM compact Just a little smaller for me more accurate and the grip is more comfortable. I can shoot the M&P all day the Glock with the square grip starts to hurt my thumb after about 50 rounds:)

Try some out

I would also suggest trying some of these out from friends or rentals since your experience has all been with revolvers. You may personally find one caliber that fits you better, or one size of pistol that fits your shooting ability and carry ability better.

sounds like your a glock man. not my choice but good guns. so it's really down to just the caliber. with the current ammo situation everything is hard to get, hit or miss. mostly tho it seems that 9mm is easier to find, check your area for availability near you. nothing worse than a new gun and no ammo. i prefer 9mm to 40 cal, cheaper to shoot, usually easier to find, 40 cal more expensive harder to find but more powerful. i don't see the power thing as an issue with hi cap pistols like a glock. good luck.

On this issue only . . . .

When I did my qualification for the sheriff's department I qualified with both my duty gun Glock model 20 (10mm auto) and my B.U.G. Glock 27 (.40 S&W). I dropped two rounds out of the ten zone to the 9 zone with the duty gun, but with the Glock 27 I shot a perfect score. Same qualification course. Since I shot the BUG second, I was a little more careful shooting the stage where I had dropped the 2 rounds with the Glock 20.

I convey this to illustrate that the .40S&W is not a bear to shoot (at least for me).

I didn't mean to imply that I was buying "illigal" "firearms". What I was trying to say is that I have carried a handgun before without a CCW permit, only because it was almost impossible in Southern Calif. to be issued one (even though it seemed that everyone and their brother was carrying and "using" them. You even needed to sit low in the seat, on the freeway coming home from work). I have been riding a bike for near 40 years now, when I would take off on a ride for 3 to 5 days by myself, I would pack my 38 snub in my sleeping bag for when I got my camp set at night. I asked the local sheriff's dept how I could carry a "weapon" on my scooter and they told me that they "didn't know". I improvised, adapted, overcame !!!!
Not sure about "firearm vrs. weapon" but thanks for the advice.

I realize that 100%. Some people won't- some won't because they really don't understand, and some will choose to misunderstand what you are saying if you choose those words. I do not want this to turn this into some kind of big deal. If you want to use those terms, go right ahead. I would not put things that way, and I would not call it a 'weapon', for the same reason- some people with narrow minds will label you and your intentions. In fact, I wouldn't tell people you're carrying at all- but that is your choice.

Good luck with the new pistol :)

...nailed it. Try before you buy.

One thing that I realized after buying an M&P: most authorities say it's a good idea to put several hundred rounds, including a fair number of the defensive rounds you will carry, through any semi-auto before trusting the gun. Some manufacturers also recommend a break in period. Factor that into your budget and plans.

I frequently carry a Colt 1911 full size IWB. Daily I carry a Model 22 Glock IWB for several hours. This is done concealed and without a jacket covering 90% of the time.

If you only wear a Speedo then you will have an issue with anything. My brother in law is 5'7" and he could not carry a derringer IWB due to his taste for tight fitting clothing to show off his trim body. I wear loose fitting but comfortable dress clothing and there is not a problem.

A person with a smaller body frame may have some difficulty but it can be done with a little planning.

My major concern with IWB concealed carry is the wear on my clothing and car interior.

I first purchased a G19 with the intention of carrying it daily. I found that it was to large for me to comfortably carry in the warmer months, so I bought a G36. It turned out to be the perfect size for me and now I carry it year round.

Snubbie

Also agree with the snubbie as an option. I would personally not feel under gunned or under capacity with one, and a speed strip / loader in a pocket or in a case.
