Combat vs self-defense rifles?

Self defense or home defense rarely happens at 500 yards.
A combat unit can easily be in a situation where they offensivly or defensivly engage at looong range.
Personal/home defense normally happens a lot closer to "home".
A good firearm for self defense can usually be a lot more limited in range than what one would choose to have in an all around infantry role.
Lot's of overlap tho:)

I find it hard to call any rifle a "self defense" rifle seeing how they are not intended for indoor, rural areas. You're liable to kill your perp and your neighbor next door.

Many people don't realize how much a high powered rifle bullet can penetrate before it stops. We don't live in brick houses like they do in Europe and middle east. High powered rifle bullets will go through our sheetrock and plywood houses like paper.

Incorrect. The high speed causes them to fragment more readily than slower rounds; you get less penetration of sheetrock with .223 than you do with .45ACP or 00 Buck.

"...the Assault Rifle Category..." There's no such thing as a .223/5.56 assault rifle. An assualt rifle is defined as a select fire rifle using the same calibre as the PBI rifle, but with a smaller cartridge.
"...to say that battle rifles have not been in use since the 60's is..." Nonsense. Of all the currently issued military rifles, anywhere, only the AK-47 is an assault rifle. Everything else is a battle rifle.
"...the clown shoe wearing crew who..." That'd be Eisenhower's bunch. MacNamara jammed the 5.56 down NATO's throat.

1) I'm not aware of anyone who limits the definition of assault rifles to full bore, reduced power rounds like 7.62x39 or 7.92x33, but excludes Small Caliber High Velocity rounds.

2) The AK simply isn't categorically distinct from the M16, etc. All are intended for optimized performance engaging targets inside 3-400 meters, using lower powered ammunition, higher capacity magazines, and an automatic capability.

3) McNamara was long gone before 5.56mm was ever forced on NATO.

amygdala:
I can't tell you the difference, but on another well-known website I've begun to wonder whether lots of guys almost secretly hope that they can one day be in a Road Warrior scenario, not just with an Albanian SKS...

They will be able to empty multiple 30-rd. mags of 7.62x39 (pre-ban Bulgarian or built in Las Vegas, not a WASR) or -better yet- the PTR-91's .308 into the wicked bikers or gangstas who will shoot into their homes from about 50 feet, thereby justifying the rifles' cost and ammo for the "home defense" mission.

Part of their motivation can be to win the quiet admiration of a tall, foxy armor-clad blond babe holding a crossbow (a neighbor's daughter?), such as the Australian rock singer who played that role in the movie.
