Combat Knife

Allright, we'll I'm looking for a knife. In my state, it has to be three inches and a folder. I don't know too much about knives but I don't want it to cost in the hundreds or too cheap. Just something that fits the legal requirements and won't break. Suggestions?

I ordered one from sooner state knives last week. So it might be here this week only that when i went on their web site now it says their sold out.So either i got the last one or they didn't know they was out of them. I'm going to call them monday and see if they shipped it or not. I hoped they did since they already billed me for it.

what are we talking about?

It's a knife..no big deal..find one you like and go with it. I've had a Buck 119 for 25 years and a folding hunter for 15. No they are not black or "tactical" or any of that crap. Just a good sharp quality knife. Of course if anyone pulls a knife on me I'm gonna shoot their ass dead...I do not wanna get cut!;)

its very hard indeed to beat the original MOD patches. of course its discontinued so that poses a problem unless you happen to have a few.

if your opponent is a true warrior he will face you in hand-to-hand combat. Anyone who pulls a gun on a knifemen is a coward in my book the handgun is for when someone threatens you with a handgun or threatens your family.

You're joking right? If you think for one damn minute that a knife is less dangerous than a gun in the hands of your attacker then you obviously haven't seen this.
**VERY GORY** Do not open at work, etc.

There's no place for "honor" when it comes to staying alive in a self defense fight... save that stuff for the dojo where you can get points for hits that might have landed had you actually been fighting. Self defense is about surviving, and staying out of jail doing it, and that's it.

In all reality, those cuts that were shown in the link to the pictures a post or two above this, could have been caused by a knife blade only an inch or two in length.
I carry a knife on me at all times, it is a benchmade with a three inch blade. I feel prety confident that if i was confronted, and was forced to defend myself, that that knife would cause serious enough injuries to alow me to exit the situation in relitive saftey. I belive that the location of the cuts are more important than the depth of the cut, but thats a difrent subject than he wanted covered here. :D

Take a look at the Spyderco Civilian. It's designed so that ONLY slashing cuts are possible. It was designed for a federal LEA, as a last-ditch, get me outta' here thing.

I was taught that a folding knife would cut you, a hunting knife would cut you to the bone, and a fighting knife would cut through the bone. That came from the observations of a WWI vet many years ago. It's a bit impractical to go about with a 7-10" heavy-bladed knife in today's world. In fact, in many areas, the open display of a sheath knife will draw unwanted attention faster than a peek at a holstered pistol will.

A skilled person can make a 3" blade folder of good quality a substantial weapon. However, under normal circumstances, a gun is going to be a more lethal weapon.

so if your opponent is a true warrior he will face you in hand-to-hand combat

There are a lot of folks out there who dont go by a rule book.

Personally, if I had a sidearm and a guy pulled out a blade, I would not put the gun back in the holster and grab my blade. I would shoot him if he persisted and did not cease and desist in his attempt to harm me.

I work in a federal building which does not allow for CCW on the premises. I carry a Cold Steel TiLite with the 4 inch blade. They make one with a 6 inch blade but in Texas the limit is a 5 1/2" Blade on your person. Plus I can carry it on the University when I attend classes.

for those rambo's out there... you may carry a COMBAT knife. i cut alot more strings and tape than people. a knife is a tool first. ill take a chair over a knife anyday. ill grap a flowerpot, table leg, trash can, stroller, ect and wear you out w/ it before i pull out a knife. sorry to dash your hopes of being on the front page of your high school paper for killing a few terrorist w/ your cold steel voyager, but, your living in a modern movie induced fantasy world. iv been a cop and a Marine MP and never had to cut or stab anyone. if you think that your gonna have to go into knife combat @ McDonalds then you need to find a new job.

True warriors....mall ninjas....tactical experts....

Too much Hollywood, not enough reality.

P.S. Your knives will be worthless during the zombie uprising.
But I'll presume that a "true warrior" would know that already. ;)

triggerhappy2006,

your opponent is a true warrior he will face you in hand-to-hand combat

I hope you have "heard" the folks who've spoken to this statement. If not let me give some additional advice. I've been a student of knives, swords and other bladed weapons for nearly 30 years. By the time I was your age I had been competing for 3 years fencing saber and I was a student of western knife fighting and a hapkido student. Like you I was full of romantic notions of the warrior's code and the duel and the honor of the blade. Over the next 20 years I learned that TV and movie fantasies about these romantic notions of combat COULD GET YOU AND YOUR FAMILY KILLED. The bad guy isn't interested in the fantasy. We're not interested in romance. Leave that for the girls in your life. We're interested in surviving a lethal attack and defending our families from people so fiendish that they would willingly take another human life.

I'm not one of the guys that think a gun is a magic talisman or the only solution. I know well over a dozen different ways to kill you with a blade, but if you are my attacker and I see you with a knife and you're at a distance that allows me to draw my .45 and shoot you repeatedly instead of using one of the 3 knives I'm likely to have on me I'll do it in a heart beat. If you are too close for the gun I will use those knives, but I will not bow or salute you because it is not a video game. The life of my family or my life is on the line and I will stop you as quickly and brutally as possible. I will kick and punch and stab and with luck I will drive my blade into you over and over agian until I hit something that induces immediate shock or I let enough blood out of your veins and arteries that you collapse from blood loss. You're an attacker, not my honored opponent and you won't get any consideration as long as you are a threat.

Discard these romantic notions. Using a knife to defend yourself is not dueling. It is slaughter mixed with murder and if you approach it any other way you will die on the street.

interesting to note...

I'm no scholar of medieval times but from what I've read this whole idea of honor is pretty much a romantic notion of writers much as the glorification of old west gunmen. In fact, true Knights were essentially paid mercenaries for land owners and would stop the fighting amongst themselves only if the county were threatened. I'd bet if they had access to modern firearms they'd have opted to shoot the guy charging them with a sword.
