Combat Knife

I recently bought a knife combat video put out by Cold Steel in the video the instuctor says that an ideal combat knife that would be used for self-defense purposes should be big enough to severe someones head or limb in a single cut:eek: . I though this was a little extreme for self defense. I have a Ka-Bar Full Size Black Serrated Knife and would like something a little smaller for a back belt mount. can anyone recommend me a good knife with a blade length around 4-1/2 inches double edge?

Severe a head ? Use a kukri !!! For other combat I wouldn't worry about double edged [illegal in some states] . My most often used hunting knife a CS Master Hunter ought to work well at 4 1/2 " .

Sure, go for a Randall #24 Guardian

Sure, go for a Randall #24 Guardian. I'd suggest a Russell/Morseth bootknife as well - available only on the used collector market but there was one on E-Bay last week.

I've been looking for a benchmade 145 nimravus cub 4" blade and can be mounted horizonally on belt. I want it on my weak side for defense in case of someone's trying to take my pistol away.

you and the instructor are right.
the problem is that you are misunderstanding the difference between combat and self defense. combat is about offense and NO ONE in thier right mind would mount an Offense with a knife. it may very well come to that but no one i know would begin with less than a handgun as an offensive weapon.

PSE i know that but im not 21 yet so i cant carry a pistol. Combat requires much more skill with a knife than it does with a handgun so if your opponent is a true warrior he will face you in hand-to-hand combat. Anyone who pulls a gun on a knifemen is a coward in my book the handgun is for when someone threatens you with a handgun or threatens your family.

 A handgun is used in self defense when your life is in immediate danger. The entire purpose of having a gun is to tilt the odds in your favor. I don't want to fight on even grounds, I want to stack the odds in my favor, I want to do anything to survive and neutralize the threat. You should worry less about being an "true warrior" and more about surviving and protecting your family. Criminals are not true warriors, and they don't give a darn about honour.

Sounds like your looking for a Fairbairn-Sykes commando knife, WW2 era. Gerber makes a folder called the Applegate-Fairbarin double edge 4 inches

Someone who pulls a gun on a knifemen is a coward? I understand what you're saying. But there's no such thing as rules in a fight. You take whatever advantage you can get. You can't be unsporting in a fight for your life.Look at my handle what would you think would be my preferred method of settling a dispute.:D

The only guy left standing in a fair fight is the guy who cheated.

+1

If you engage in a fair fight, you are consenting to mutual combat. In just about any region of the United States you can name, that means the survivor goes to prison for murder.

Get more training and rethink your attitude toward the purpose of your weapons before it's too late.

ill take a 13" wakizashi in a house sized bedroom any day over a pistol. unless you center punch me or head pop me im gonna cause some massive bleeding. i may die...
tommorow or next week, yes.
BUT, your gonna bleed out before the ambulance gets its engine warm.
My advice to you is this. forget all that BS your watching on TV and DVDs. Carry your a$$ down to the recruiters office and get some trigger time. then talk to me about a coward pulling a gun on someone armed w/ a knife. No SUCH THING. You threaten my place on this green & blue ball and ill cut smash shoot knaw you till you will never be able to mount another offense. NO RULES.
Book of Kellet Chapter 1 verse 1...Geteth thou someth.
verse 2?
DO IT QUICKLY!
AMEN

True Warrior?

A warriors mission is to find an advantage over your foe and eliminate it in a timely manner to move on with the next foe. Theres no time for rules!!! You win, you live/ you lose, you die! There are always weapons lying on any battlefield/or street. Your mind is the most dangerous weapon. You can sharpen a spoon, and wrap it in duct tape for a handle... Thats not illegal in any state as far as I know of? Other wise Id go with any Gerber..

Knife fighting pretty much sucks!! Expect to bleed yourself, even if you win. The winner of all too many knife fights is the guy who dies last.

In a land far away, about 35 years ago, I was involved in a knife fight. The man with the knife came out of the overhead foliage. I still bear the scar. I won, mostly because I was bigger, had a longer reach, a better knife, and I got up first. As far as warriors go, I'd have shot the little creature from 200 yards if I had known he was there. Man-to-man combat with stupid rules of conduct get you killed. The first rule of a fight is: "There are NO rules." The second is: "Any fight that lasts more than 60 seconds means that you're just not trying."

Knife for self-defense.

I completely disagree with the initial assertion. Do they realize how much force it would take to sever a head? And how difficult it would be to generate a blow with enough momentum without your opponent seeing you 'gear up' for such blow and successfully block it? Absurd. It should be a very sharp, small & maneuverable knife capable of quick repeated blows that will reach the heart (at least 4 inches, but no more than 6 or 7 inches tops), and not heavy, but light enough to easily pierce.

And, as pointed out, no one goes into 'combat' with a knife or sword, intentionally. And haven't for several hundred years. If you're defending yourself with a knife, something's gone wrong. If you're choosing a blade for 'combat', something's gone horribly wrong (Mad Max scenario), or you're an idgit or suicidal. For 'self-defense', you don't want or need such a small sword.

And yeah, the Boker Applegate-Fairbairn fighting knife is a good one for about $100. A SOG Seal pup would work well as a fighting knife too, although it's really an all-purpose knife.

I think so , or at least a fool. A knife is a lethal weapon and if he has one you are to shoot immediately otherwise you will die !!!

Anyone who pulls a gun on a knifemen is a coward in my book
This has got to be the hands-down most stupid statement I have ever read on this or any other forum, other than some of the stupid statements made in the "political" forums.

When someone attacks you - whether it is with fists, feet, club, knife, fork, spoon, chain, broken bottle, a vehicle or a gun - there is but one rule: Win/survive any way you can.

Let's look at a couple of the U.S. Marine Corps rules of fighting:

1: Always cheat, always win. The only fair fight is the one that you win.

2: When attending a fight, always bring a gun; bring two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

3: Always bring a gun to a knife fight.

I guess that makes all the U.S. Marines cowards:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

The Nimravus Cub is an excellent knife! I have a plain edged as well as a combo/serrated edge. I might could be talked into parting with the plain edge cub but the combo isn't going anywhere. I'd also have to lay eyes on the combo to make sure I still have it before I let the plain go. I think it's in my gunsafe which is "offsite". If you're interested in the plain I'll try to round up the combo and we can talk. Just let me know... Fwiw, both are in excellent condition and I've never cut anything with them. Safe/drawer queens. All my carry knives are folders but I just fell in love with these knives and had to have 'em. ;)
