Colt's "new" Series 70

Dang it, Castle, I almost choked when I scrolled down to the "El Barbacoa." That has got to be the funniest thing I have seen this winter.

Some little part of me would like to stick the "El Barbacoa" deep in my backpack, hire some grizzled old guide to take me on a remote hunting trip, and then pull that baby out after we reached our destination on the third day. The look on his face would be worth the expense. I understand the guide would have to kill me on general principles, but I'd die with an enormous grin on my face.

dsk,
Are the sights on that new 70 repop plain black or dots?
I may be one of the strange ones here but I would like
to see it come in a exact duplicate of the original 70's.

I think that all of the fixed sights on the new colts are what they used to call national match sights, before adjustible sights were allowed in bullseye competition.

That is one nice looking gun, a few months ago I saw a polished series 70 lnib for $975 it was made in 1974 and had all papers.

I own a nickle plated model circa 1979 the roll marks, trigger, and ejection port all look the same. I traded for mine about 2 years ago, a sig 230sl which I had paid $325 for.

The original owner had MMC miniature sights put on mine in 1980.
Mine was an under the counter gun for about 20 years it had some scratches on it but probably only fired about 100 rounds in its entire life prior to my ownership.

Nice to be able to provide a reason...

....to chuckle in the great Southwest...I knew only certain "regional" types would respond...have a great day in sunny Arizona:)

AC's & 45's,

The sights are plain black. Personally, I'm impartial to the original sights. I loike the low profile of GI sights, but the new ones do make it easier to it with if you actually intend to shoot the thing. It also has the wide front tenon, which was narrow on the old Series 70's.

I have an original Series 70 that I had the ejection port lowered and Wilson three dot combat sights installed on back in around 1982. I love that gun and if I can come up with the bread I will buy one of the new ones.

Well, I fired it today for the first time. Reliablilty was excellent, although I was only shooting hardball. And yes, it even dings the mouths of the empty cases just like the original.

Sounds kinda familiar. I have an early Series 80 GM that originally had a Series 70 style high ejection port. It threw the brass against the edge of the port so bad as to affect reliability. I finally sent the gun to Colt's service department, which lowered the port! Since the gun was ported the brass just grazes the edge. Anyway, now we're back to high ports--full circle. But obviously the new Series 70 is not so bad as my Series 80 was. :)

I'm in love. Those two photos stir up something deep inside, perhaps a yearning for another time when things were simpler...

Dang I like that gun.

dsk...........

Hey, its '91A1 from 1911forum............me and my brother just picked up our Series '70s the other day too. They are very nice! I also got my WWII repro back from Colt the same day too! Talk about your lucky days. We plan on goin' shootin' this weekend.
I was going to post this on the 1911forum a couple of days ago..........but it was down and seems to still be down now.

One last thing, did your Series '70 only come with one mag?
'Cause ours only came with one. I could swear I remember reading that they came with two, must have just been the newer '91s I guess.

Nope, mine only came with one as well. It doesn't bother me because the new Colt mags aren't that good. I just fired mine for the second time today. It's definitely a shooter. The feeding cycle feels perfectly smooth as well. When you trip the slide release, there's no "bang-cathunk" of the cartridge going into the chamber like with some 1911s. Just one smooth "thunk" and the round is in the pipe.

Looks SCHWEET!!! Probably gonna hafta' get one of these to use as a "base gun" for a "custom" build I have in mind for the near future...IIRC, it DOES NOT have the "Series '80" firing pin safety "goodies", RIGHT???....mikey357

Granted, there are other manufacturers out there that have less expensive, series 70 style 1911A1's. My Springfield pops to mind. But there is something about having a COLT series 70 1911A1... Maybe it is the simple fact that its a recreation of a fine piece of handgunning history.

I wish I could get one, but I'm to be wed in a few months, and my priorities are shifted just enough so that my $ could be better spent elsewhere. I'll keep hinting to my future wife that my happiness would indeed be enhanced with a gun like dsk's.

Are they limitiing production numbers or anything like that? Or will the "new" guns be a regular production item? I looked on the Colt website, but I couldn't find anything.

HAH!

...I l-o-v-e the "EL" series guns!

It cracks me up to think how many cheap 38 supers will be on the market someday soon!

I'll take just about anything 1911 though...just a junkie for an old standby in any config. I guess...
