Colt's "new" Series 70

I just picked up one of the newly re-introduced Colt Series 70 pistols. Yeah they are kinda pricey, but I wanted a good non-Series 80 Colt to shoot and it was either this or a 20-year old used gun for about the same price!

Anyway, they are pretty much dead ringers for the old ones. The only differences are the larger sights, cast sear & disconnector, and nylon mainspring housing. At least the trigger is steel and the polish is as good as the old ones. The fit is just as good as well, with a smooth feel to all the moving parts and a very good trigger pull. The slide/frame fit is tight yet smooth, and the barrel fit is excellent as well. Yup, I'd expect it on a gun of this price, but at least it's there.

One other difference, however. Colt usually throws on the same double-diamond checkered grips as on their XSE line. I yanked them off and added a set of traditional medallion grips to mine, so that is the one thing that differs from what is available out there. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but will soon.

Nice, but I see Colt has gone back to a slide that does not have a lowered ejection port. Definitely retro!

I missed getting a new Series 70 GM the first go-round, and am glad to have another chance. Definitely a must-have--if I can afford it!

dsk, nice Colt. Here is my Series 70 Combat Commander for comparison with your new one. Mine is about 22 years old and has had some work as you can see.

Sorry, no pictures. My jpg's are to big for the forum to handle. I would have cancelled this reply altogether, but I couldn't see how to do it.

It has the solid bushing. The sights are the same as on the M1991A1. The unit was $874 before a trade-in, but then again the high-polish Kimber Custom Royal is about $1,000. Getting a nice polish on a gun sure ain't cheap these days. Colt's "new rollmark" Series 80's are going for about $600, but they don't have nearly as fine a polish on the flats.

Awesome!

Great looking piece. I have one just like it, although its my wife's, a real series 70! Just curious, is the trigger metal or plastic?

This is what I get for thinking...

....that if I HAD to spend ~ $1000 on a 1911 style production pistol, I would be forced to do the un-thinkable...I'd buy a Wilson Millenium Protector:o :(

It was a joke referring to all the special edition 1911s in .38 Super that Colt makes in flashy finishes with names like "El Jefe Supremo," "El Capitain," "El Teniente," etc.

El Nino? Or for those of you who don't speak espanol, that's "The Nino". Or sumptin' like that.

ANy chance in hell (California) I can get one of those?

If you ask me, that looks like...

....a "El Pendejo" Model...or am I confusing it with the "El Maricon" ??:barf:

That new...

...Series 70 shore is purty, but I'd probably wind up hot-rodding it, which sorta defeats the purpose. ;)

That "El Bordello" model, on the other hand, is proof in steel that money doesn't buy taste. :D

I bought a new Series 80 a month ago, the one with the new rollmark, polished slide but matte frame. I started polishing the frame out as well, then suddenly the "Hot-Rod" bug hit me during the night (sorry, I don't have anything else to think about while lying there). I just finished spending all day fitting a Wilson beavertail to the thing! I'll add a few more goodies, then send it off for rebluing or hard chroming (haven't decided yet if I want to keep it cheap or go gaga).

Hope I don't change my mind about the safety tonight, as it's a little too late now. ;)
