A bad day with my Colt is still better than a good week with a s&w.

Ruger revolvers are great, . . . can't say much good for their autos, . . . IMHO.

May God bless,
Dwight

S&W okay but I like Colt better

I like Smith and Wesson but I think Colts look better and feel better in hand and in shooting. Colt and Smith and Wesson have have a longer history and have more of a story to tell than the Ruger (although a lot of people like rugers, they're a gun, they work, that's what counts)

I prefer S&W to various generic "Brand X" revolvers... (You know: Taurus, Rossi, H&R, Arminius, RG, Ruger, Colt, et cetera... :D )

It's a lot easier to be logical with autos; revolver decisions tend to come from the heart. ;)

I recently had a choice. A Ruger GP-100 or a S&W M13 or a Colt Lawman MKIII. I bought the Colt. It was the highest quality revolver.

It is the design that makes the difference. Smiths are just better designed.
Look at the Ruger spring system - basic and punk. And , for example, the Colt cylinder release - ridiculous. I only like the Smiths because they are good, not because they are stylish, or because their blueing is exquisite, like French laquerwork, and not because they are so strong you can shove them into a bulldozer track and stop it. But that's just me - some people like different things because they are different, even if they're not much good intrinsically - and who can blame them? It wouldn't do if we were all the same.

This is like the proverbial, "Which is better, Ford or Chevy--" argument. Aren't you glad you live in a country with such a wealth of great choices and great companies that we have these three superb products to pick from?
By the way, Smith and Wesson, and Ford!!! :D

I would have to say Smith&Wesson makes the most desirable revolver. They have a alot of classics!

Tamara,

How is Ruger a Brand X manufacturer?

The poll asks us "Who MAKES the most desireable revolver?" The question is definitely not, "Who MADE the most desireable revolver?"

I'd have said Colt makes the most desireable revolver if the Python were still in production and those that were recently produced equaled those of its glory days, but they do not.

I'd then say Smith makes the most desireable revolver. In reality, they haven't made a desireable one in quite a long while. The current ones are aesthetic eyesores, chock full of MIM, and given one of the silliest internal locks yet devised. Some of the best models, the M19 3", and the blue ones generally across the board, have all been replaced by inferior "Scamdium" product.

For me then there is only one correct answer for current production. For a new revolver, Ruger is the only game in town.

However, I always keep an eye peeled for a minty S&W or Colt from the increasingly distant past. They both used to make very desireable revolvers. The current wares of both those brands hold none of the old mystique in my mind.

I've excluded the category of SA revolvers from consideration because S&W doesn't make them and that's the only wheelgun left in Colt's inventory.

35 Years ago, Colts had the tightest barrels and the best bluing on the market. S&W revolvers, when properly tuned, had the slickest actions and could compete with Colt in target use. I've seen more than a few "Smolt" revolvers (S&W with a Colt barrel fitted) in my time to get the best of both. :) I've always liked the looks of the S&W's more than Colts, mostly due to the underlugs on the S&W's.

Rugers, are decent guns, have never appealed to me from either an appearance standpoint or from an accuracy perspective.

this is easy........Ruger of course.....I have a Redhawk, Super Redhawk, Super Blackhawk, and a GP100......also 2 S&W Model 66's and a model 610 which right now is the best that S&W makes along with the Model 625, only problem is you have to use moon clips........Colt?...try to find any around..........

How is Ruger a Brand X manufacturer?
Good question, how are Ruger and Colt "brand X"?

Like I mentioned in my post, revolvers are something I have a much harder time being rational about than other guns. When it comes to rifles or shotguns or semiauto pistols, I can discuss ergonomics and materials and engineering and craftsmanship objectively, but when it comes to wheelguns, I bleed Blue & White. :o

Why am I a Braves fan? Why do I prefer Kawasaki to Honda, or Ales over Lagers? Why do I like Italian food better than Chinese, or prefer Classical to Jazz? Who knows... Some things in life are purely subjective.

So, basically, my little "Brand X" joke was just a gag along the lines of "I'd rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford" or "This is Ford country: On a quiet night, you can hear a Chevy rust." Don't read too much into it. ;)

Im not going to beat a revolver enough to need ruger's legendary strength (read: i dont need to load a "ruger/contender" load). Colt's designs never appealed to me. S&W, while I detest the lock, makes the most desirable revolvers, in my opinion. They are the only one I would own, hands down, no question, end of statement.

That S&W 625 with the 4" barrel has led to a personal wheelgun renaissance for me. It's such a great gun, shoots so well, trigger PERFECT out of the box... that it makes me wonder why Smith & Wesson's .45ACP offerings are down to 2 guns. I am a bit squirrely about Scandium/Titanium... for a revolver, I really don't want light. I want lots of nice mass in the form of steel to help absorb the recoil. The 625 is a pussycat, I could shoot it all day long.

I'd love to see a sort of retro looking all steel BLUED snubby N in .45ACP, 6 shots, something that weighs in at over 2lbs. Checkered grips. It's a shame, ain't it, when your dream gun isn't available brand new from the company that should be making it?
