Colt no longer making 1911's?

The local shop was telling me that Colt is no longer making 1911's.
They were trying to tell me that what was on the shelf was it, and then I would never see another Colt.
I do remember that they are no longer making some lines of guns, but I don't recall which ones they are still making.
They are still making the 1911's aren't they?
Are they still making all the sizes of 1911's.....the Commander, Officer and Government models?

Well technically speaking they aren't building the 1911 per se. The 1911 style SA auto currently manufactured is designated the model 1991. But I don't think that is what your dealer meant.

We live in a time in which attitudes and deeds once respected as courageous and honorable are now scorned as being antiquated and subversive.

in all fairness to the dealers out there colt has compleatly stoped shipping all guns except the saa 45lc.the only single 1911 that leaves the factory are to people colt owes money to.they are so broke they are paying there advertising bills with guns.if your dealer is getting colt guns in theyare through differnt channels and have likely been passed from dealer to dealer or distibutor to distributor.some distributors pulled what they had off the shelvels last oct in speculation of a hefty price increase and a higher profit margin.this is very common in this bussiness. i should know ive been in it for 15 years.

Hi, guys,

Technically, Colt has not made the M1911 since the 1920's. They stopped making the M1911A1 in 1945. AFAIK, they are still making the Government Model. They had initially said they were dropping the 1991A1 but the last I heard they had restored it to production.

It really doesn't matter whether Colt is still building the old warhorse or not...if they were, it wouldn't be a 'best buy'. We're okay so long as Springfield and Kimber are still in business. --slabsides

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.

I own Kimbers, Springfield Armorys, Caspians, ODIs, ParaOrdnances, Randalls and Colts. But all are clones except Colt. When you say 1911, Colt immediately comes to most peoples mind. The world will be a sadder sorrier place without Colt. Now Smith $ Wesson is an entirely different matter. Boycott the sellout traitors. We can live without Smith $ Wessons semiautomatic jamamatics but not the mighty 1911.

Colt is shipping the XS-series O models. I don't think the 1991 series O model is ready to go yet. The backlog of order since last Oct is HUGE. I have heard that the XS's that have shipped are some of the nicest Colt's to come off the line in over 20 years, apparently the new general in charge has put the fear of God into the remaining employees. Also, the M-4 contract is complete and that production line will be gearing up to start producing the Match Target for the civilian market soon.

They have started to ship the 1991's too. The latest XS and 1991's that they have shipped have shown a few crappy quality control issues. A local gunshop got some in and on the XS gun, they didn't have the rear sight aligned with the dovetail right and when they drove it in. it sheared off a piece of metal which was still curled up on the side of the sight and the sight was crooked as hell. The 1991's rear sight wan't finished machined so one side was rounded and the other straight and the notch off center.

This dealer was trying to rip you off. Dont ever go back there. Colt cut back its line last November, and they got rid of some wonderful guns, but the 1911 is not one of them, how much was that dealer trying to charge you? Colt stopped production on all DA revolvers(even the ANACONDA). So they make their rifles, 1911's, and SA revolvers. They have been making 1911's for almost a century, why would they quit now?

As far as I know they are just bought a Combat Commander XS series about 2 months ago new. and still see new ones in local gun shop!! I would find a new gun shop!!

Good Luck :D

Hello all! Just thought I could bring some interesting info to this discussion. I shoot at The Bullet Trap here in Plano Texas. They have a laminated letter from Colt in their Colt display case. Basically it says it will be filling NO NEW ORDERS for several guns to include the 1991 series. The only ones that will still be in production will be the Colt SAA and one more I cannot remember (not a 1911 type). I can't believe this either..but I seen this with my own eyes!

Want to know the facts about Colt, well then this weeks Newsweek will interview the former director of handguns for Colt. He tells it how it is. He is also to be on NBC news tuesday of this week.

As usual, the gun stores are full of crap. And they wonder why I don't buy from them, but through mail order instead (through an FFL of course).

I am told that the new stuff coming out of Colt is outstanding in quality. I am looking forward to getting a new 1911 from them, now that they are putting out a decent product.

yep thats right colt is not filling any orders.all this mull about colt shipping guns is pure bunk.the only guns getting to dealer showrooms are what i previosly stated.i am glad someone else saw the letter ijust wish i had a copy to prove it.i think that there is wishfull thinking on many peoples part out there to see colt thrive again but its sad to say i dont think its going to happen.

The letter which Colt originally put out is a bit outdated now. They did say at first that they wouldn't be producing the 1991. However, they went back on their word, and decided not to drop the 1991 line. When we'll see them, I don't know.

Gunmart, sorry but you're wrong. I know as I have talked to reps at both Lew Horton and RSR that have both said that they have been receiving product from Colt, and that they are still shipping every few weeks, just in small numbers and that's due to the small work force slapping the guns together. I've seen a bunch of these letters saying they won't make or ship this and that, and they are all dated back in October and November of last year. Things changed since they first announced the cut back. They even said so at the SHOT Show in January.
